The public broadcaster, which is ad funded, confirmed in its annual financial report released yesterday that former Shine CEO Mahon had been awarded just under 1.5m in 2022. Ofcom to investigate GB News and TalkTV over impartiality rules
Ofcom has launched investigations into GB News and TalkTV as the media regulator struggles to handle how rightwing television channels are employing serving politicians as presenters. GB News and TalkTV's willingness to push opinionated television news in a manner not traditionally seen on British television has left Ofcom playing catch-up, trying to apply a broadcast code written in a different era dominated by the BBC and ITV. British broadcast rules ban serving politicians from acting as news presenters on television and radio stations, unless there are exceptional circumstances. - www.theguardian.comwww.theguardian.comFriday 30 June 2023, PM

Britons will soon spend more on streaming than TV, analysts say
Within two years the streaming revolution will claim a new milestone when Britons spend more on services such as Netflix and Disney than they do on traditional paid TV packages, according to a report by PwC. In 2025, British consumers are forecast to spend 4.2bn on subscription video-on-demand services including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney and Apple TV to get their fill of content ranging from the Star Wars and Marvel franchises to Lord of the Rings spin-offs, comedies such as Ted Lasso and reality TV including Selling Sunset. In 2018, TV subscription revenues stood at 4.9bn. However, they peaked in 2022 and are predicted to have dropped to 4.1bn by 2027, at which point SVoD spend is forecast to have grown to 4.7bn. Sky continues to diversify away from its traditional satellite TV business into areas including broadband, mobile, smart TVs and streaming through its own service Now TV as well as aggregating erstwhile rivals such as Netflix into its own bundles. - www.theguardian.comwww.theguardian.comMonday 26 June 2023, PM

Opportunities for BBC Local Radio
BBC Sounds have their own objectives, particularly driving reach of under 35s. Getting local podcasts launched seems to be the result of commissioning decisions by Local Radio HQ and BBC Sounds - if unaligned this could be difficult to get done. If commercial radio streams can have local ads why can't you drop in a local weather bulletin down to a town Why shouldn't national and regional shows be able to reference a clip from the local breakfast show. - www.mattdeegan.comwww.mattdeegan.comWednesday 31 May 2023, PM
