We have had an intermittent thin line flash across the screen of our TV for a couple of weeks. Also occasional evening interference which is a little annoying. We spoke with Woolacotts in Barnstaple who said that the North Devon transmitter was having some work done and we should just be patient and expect improvement soon. We have three TVs one upstairs one in the living room and one in our conservatory, an external aerial on prime position on top of our house which has to date produced excellent performance. Post Code EX31 2NS
Grateful if you can reassure us that this interference is temporary? Thank you.

David Chisnall: The Huntshaw Cross transmitter, which is predicted to be available at your postcode (and is also the parent transmitter of the Barnstaple relay) is listed as having engineering work taking place this week. Unfortunately no information is given regarding what sort of work is taking place or how long it is expected to last.

David Chisnall: An alternative possibility to engineering works is that it could be interference owing to a mobile phone base station which has started up in the 700MHz or 800MHz bands, frequencies which previously were for TV.
Restore TV is the organisation charged with alleviating such reception issues, and they say that postcards have been sent to your postcode. The solution is usually to fit a filter to block the unwanted phone signals. Whether any individual property will or will not have difficulty is in no way an exact science.
If your single TV aerial feeds the three rooms via a powered amplifier then any filter must go before it. Where this is outside on the roof, then Restore TV should send an engineer to fit one for free.

David Chisnall:
It could be helpful for us to provide further comment if you can tell us which way your aerial points.
Does it point almost due E, compass bearing 84 degrees with its rods (or squashed Xs) vertical?
Or does it point almost due S, compass bearing 174 degrees with its rods/squashed Xs horizontal?
Which channels are you having problems with?
