Had the opportunity to try another slightly newer TV and also a brand new Sony AV amp.......and the problem remains exactly as before
Also noticed that ch 5 HD the same sound and same level is coming out of ALL the speakers (ideally the speech will be mainly the centre, stereo sounds to front L & R with the odd effect from the rears as it does on every other channel
A friend of mine also looked at the audio streams and said they were identical......so how and why is it happening
ch 5 SD is fine as are all the other channels

I think your best bet will be to email Channel5 again giving all that technical detail and complain that the problem hasn't been resolved since you last contacted them ..... however many weeks ago that was!

Thanks,
I have emailed them several times but the replies have been along the lines of resetting my app.....
I have explained quite clearly that the problem is with live freeview on a TV set but they seem unable to grasp the concept of that
It doesnt bode well ......

Try again, but this time be more blunt. Tell them you have presented technical information from another independent source as well as your own information, and the problem needs to be passed to someone who knows what they are talking about and to stop fobbing you off with nonsense.

I doubt Channel5 have a clue as far as technical matters.
BBC might be a better bet - it is their multiplex.
Is the newer telly a Panasonic? What is your friend's?
What does the amp report as input and output?
