Freeview Light on the Wrexham Rhos (Wrexham, Wales) transmitter

DJP: ITV1 HD does not necessarily provide the same regional feed as ITV1 definition does because there are only four ITV1 HD feeds nationwide. For example, in Yorkshire we get ITV1 HD . I'm not sure which one transmitters in carry.

What's the make and model number?

Go to BBC One (standard definition) and bring up the strength page. What UHF is it tuned to? And again for ITV1 standard definition? And same goes for BBC One HD?

DJP: I've just seen your posting after I posted my latest message.

Good to hear that you fixed it. It might be worth writing down what you did as it might when you come to retune at a later date.

Dave, I think all the Welsh transmitters carry ITV HD Central.

It looks as if I've got a hybrid of both and MYP with regard to the I'm getting. BBC 1 SD is on channel 45, ITV , S4C and are on channel 49, whilst BBC 3 and 4 along with the majority of all other channels seem to be coming from Winter Hill. BBC 1 HD and S4C Clirlun are on channel 42 whilst BBC HD is channel 54.

Ironically, I don't seem to be picking anything up from channels 28, 22 & 25 which are the channels, yet I'm only about 3 miles away from the transmitter and can see the clearly from the street, as it's on the opposite mountain !!!

Don't know what I did as such, just selected the auto tune again.

DJP: Your should be vertical for and horizontal for or . It may work to a certain degree, but if you're getting nothing from Wrexham, then I am wondering if your aerial is horizontal.

Be aware that Wrexham is not a full service Freeview transmitter, which means that if you do use it, you need to use Winter Hill or Moel y Parc for them.

DJP: You have a choice. You can leave it as it is or you can try for , re-aligning your on it.

You should be aware that the commercial (COM) from Moel y Parc are at half transmission with respect to the Public Service Broadcaster (PSB) ones and that this will always be the case. Also be aware that Ch48 (Pick TV etc) may be subject to a reactive power decrease to half its full power until 24 October 2012.

What this means is that you might find that Moel y Parc COMs are unreceiveable and its PSBs are, even if you adjust the aerial so that it faces it. Should this be the case, then what you have now might be the best you can get without getting an exterior aerial and/or a higher one.

We live in north Bolton BL7 area and yesterday the BBC began to pixelate badly around 6pm then BBC disappeared altogether from our screen. Weak or was displayed on all BBC for the remainder of the night. This morning we switched on BBC working as normal. Was it the ice?

Hi, I can only get about 20 on my now. I live in wrexham so have from the rhos site. I used to et over a hundred channels before the . My ariel is on the but no matter how much i retune i cannot get certain channels at all. what can i do to get more channels.

jacqui: Before the transmitter did not carry Freeview. This means that you must have been receiving it from another transmitter that did. Furthermore, it is likely that the transmitter that you were receiving from was in its pre-switchover and therefore lower transmission (and hence weaker signals) than it uses now (after switchover).

All transmitters that provided Freeview signals before switchover provide the full range of after switchover. Ones that did not provide any Freeview before switchover (such as Rhos) broadcast only Public Service channels after switchover (they are sometimes described as "Freeview Lite"/"Freeview Light" transmitters). I assume that you only have the Public Service channels tuned which provides the following (in Wales): BBC, ITV1, ITV1+1, ITV2, , Channel 4+1, S4C, More 4, Channel 5 and the four HD services.

Without knowing your exact location, it is difficult to be quite certain, but in your general area, signals from the transmitter come in well. Winter Hill situated near Bolton and is the main transmitter that serves a large area of North West England. Due to the topography, it be can picked up in parts of North Wales.

What I suggest that you do is attempt tuning of the Commercial channels (the ones that aren't broadcast from Rhos) from Winter Hill. What you do is dependent on the design of your :

1. If it allows manual tuning, then try tuning to UHF channels (equivalent to frequencies) 58, 61 and 55 which are those which Winter Hill broadcasts the Commercial services on.

2. If it does not have manual tuning, then what you can do is more limited. Run the automatic tuning with the aerial unplugged up to 60% if its scale shows percentage progress (or if it gives UHF channels as it is scanning, plug it in at ).

The objective here is to avoid picking up signals from Rhos (which are lower than 60%) and scan Winter Hill channels. This will obviously give you and ITV1 from Winter Hill, but the point is more as a to see what can be received from Winter Hill. See if ITV3, Pick TV and Yesterday are present on logical channel numbers 10, 11 and 12 respectively. For each, bring up the strength screen and check to see what UHF channel they are each tuned to. They should read 58, 61 and 55 respectively if they are from Winter Hill.

It may be that the Commercial channels can no longer be picked up with your aerial as it is due to the change in transmission mode which will have a detrimental affect in poor circumstances. The fact that your aerial is pointing in the wrong direction and is vertical, whereas Winter Hill's signals are horizontal is clearly reducing your chances.

The objective of the above is to see whether you can pick up some level of service on the Commercial channels (those that you're missing), if for whatever reason, the automatic tuning is missing them out, what with the signals from Rhos presumably being a lot stronger.

If you didn't follow the above, then in short, you "may" be able to receive all Freeview channels and Wales regional programming with a second aerial, probably on Winter Hill.

With the above, I can probably be more specific with knowledge of the make and model of device that you are using, along with your location, preferably in the form of a post code or nearby post code (e.g. shop).
