Transmitter engineering: There is no reception from the West Burton transmitter as the Bilsdale transmitter had a fire. Why do you say there are no problems. I live in Bishopdale and we have had no reception from freeview since Tuesday 10th August. Freeview are saying "This plan should reinstate TV coverage for the vast majority of viewers who receive signals directly from Bilsdale. Due to the work required to deliver this solution we expect that work should be completed by 28th August."

Vast majority does not mean all and I bet that means those of us who rely on the West Burton transmitter will not have our service back by the 28th August because we are a small percentage. Normal service only gives access to BBC, ITV, C4 and C5 and NO HD and NO DAB, so we certainly are not a priority. Rural communities bottom of the pile - what about levelling up?

Fiona Summers-Smith: The transmitter engineering information comes from an automated feed published by BBC Engineering. Several of Bilsdale's relays have already been brought back on air either by turning around the receive aerials and retuning to another transmitter, or by using a satellite backup feed. If the West Burton is able to receive a signal from the temporary mast at Bilsdale then it will come back on air around the same time that the temporary mast is switched on.

West Burton does broadcast the main HD channels (as do all 1,000+ Freeview Lite transmitters since DSO) which are listed near the top of this page, so perhaps your TV doesn't have a DVB-T2 tuner which is required to receive the PSB3 multiplex. The transmitter serves less than 500 homes so there is no chance of any additional channels ever being provided, as the commercial broadcasters aren't prepared to pay for their channels to be transmitted to such a small potential audience. If you want more channels, look at getting Freesat.

Fiona Summers-Smith:

I suggest you have a read of Arqiva's latest update https://www.arqiva.com/ne…mast
It mentions some of the complexities involved in situations like this, it has nothing to do with levelling up, it's all to do with geography and it could give you a better understanding.
Maybe you've been reading too much of the garbage being posted on FB in some places.
As StevensOnln1 says, if you want more channels etc. consider Freesat, a lot of modern TVs have in-built satellite tuners so all you need is a dish and LNB.

Chris SE has completely missed the point when I said "Normal service only gives access to BBC, ITV, C4 and C5 and NO HD and NO DAB, so we certainly are not a priority. Rural communities bottom of the pile - what about levelling up?" I was pointing out that we get a mediocre service normally so I didn't see that we would be a priority for a return of this service by the 28th August. I have been in communication with arqiva and I know exactly what is goiing on, but how about an investment so that we get the same service as everyone else when services are returned to normal - we are bottom of the pile.

re StevensOnln 1 comment. I purchased 3 new Samsung smart TVs late 2018 and two Humax freeview players at the same time. A brand new aerial installed last year. If he uses the West Burton transmitter and does get HD then maybe I have been sold old warehouse stock that means the tvs do not have the DVB-T2 tuner as although I see an option for HD they don't work. I will check further.

I would be content with just using wifi and the hubs, but BBC iplayer does not work properly for steaming live TV. Everytime I try to use it for watching BBC news live it jumps back to a programme that was aired 2 hours previously. BBC will not accept responsibility for this even though I have no problem watching live tv news on ITV's hub. I have FTTH (FTTP) and download speeds in excess of 30mbs. Didn't check the tuners on my tvs when I purchased so probably got caught with old stock.

Fiona Summers-Smith:

Well I'm sure if you've spoken to Arqiva, you may know what's going on, but you are the one that has missed the point. It's not only the rural areas that have no signal there are people in towns that would also be served by Bilsdale and/or relays, that have no signal! When a huge mast like this suffers major damage, coverage isn't something that can be restored quickly for everyone, whether rural or urban!
What are the model numbers on your Samsungs? we might be able to check for you, they really should have T2 tuners if they are that recent.

As mentioned, it has nothing to do with "levelling-up", it is simply that the commercial operators who are responsible for the multiplexes which are not transmitted by small relays, do not think that the investment in extra transmitters etc is worth it for the small communities involved, they would not see a return on the investment considering that it's the advertising revenue that has to pay for it. If you were to contact all the commercial broadcasters involved, they would likely say well, its all there (well most of it is and extra) on Freesat.
As you think your Freeview service is mediocre, then as StevensOnln1 suggested, consider Freesat.

The BBC made some changes to iPlayer a while ago, and some new aspects of it have quite a steep learning curve IMHO, personally I don't think it's quite as user-friendly in some respects. I hope you have discovered that you can wind forward (as well as back). The BBC can be quite stubborn when it comes to some criticism!
