Hastings

Hi
I have recently purchased a holiday cottage at TN34 3BE in Hastings Old Town. I am not very familiar with the area. We have an aerial on the roof about 10 years old. Analogue signal is good on 2 channels, ok on BBC2 and terrible on C4. The TV is new with built in Freeview. I have tried a number of times to tune into digital and pick up 0 channels. Would you expect this setup to start receiving digital at the switchover?
Many thanks

Rob Tinkler: As far as Hastings old town is concerned yes! but only BBC on the 30th of May 2012, as ITV and the HD service is shown as being from June 13th 2012.

Indications are though that you should presently be able to receive Freeview from the main Hastings station, this being at 1 mile away, unless that is there is some local obstruction in existence which blocks the signal from your area, the station being located @ 280 degrees and with the aerial being mounted vertically.

Purely for a test you could try manually tuning in BBC on Mux Ch31, ITV being Mux Ch27.

Something is seriously wrong with the Hastings transmitter. Both my mother and I live on the outskirts of Hastings, different streets, but well within the green regions of your coverage maps on here.

We regularly lose signal and TV channels. All my neighbours where I live have become so fed up with it that they have had satellite (FreeSAT or Sky) dishes fitted.

When the digital changeover first happened there was no problem. But since FreeviewHD came online there has been nothing but problems. It doesn't matter what the weather it just randomly happen, mostly in the evenings.

Can anybody offer any advice or give me the details of who we should complain to please?

Many Thanks

Graham Payton:

To offer any sensible advice we need a full post code of where you live, a partial is not sufficient.

I have re-tuned my TV several times today but I cannot receive any ITV/CH5/CH5 non HD channels on the 39 band. Freeview claim there are no problems as not many people have reported it,! Not that they can do anything about it, it seems.
This is the micky mouse Hastings Old town transmitter, not the central Hastings one.

Hi MikeP,

I hope that I'm correct in assuming you are an employee not a helper; if the later then I'm sorry; please ignore the following.

There are three problems which I would like to bring to your attention:

1. On the page for the Hastings Old Town transmitter (https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Hastings) it says that there are no reported problems. Yesterday, the 4th of February 2021, we lost all the TV channels on PSB2 (C28 530MHz). So, it appears that no one has reported the problem before this notification.

2. On that same page it says that the HD channels are on PSB3 (C22 482Mhz). I went to the manual tune section of menu on my Humax and found that I had no signal at all on C22 BUT I am able to receive the HD channels. (My Humax won't tell me what multiplex channel a TV channel is obtained from but, in this case, it's unlikely to be C22.)
3. On the "Freeview reset procedure" page (https://ukfree.tv/article/1107052354/My_Freeview_box_has_no_EPG_is_blank_on_FIVE_ITV3_I) it tells you how to do an automatic retune. If you are applying this to a PVR, such as a Humax, which has some recordings scheduled it will wipe all of those schedules. I think that the page should recommend that you make a note of them all before the retune so that you can more easily reinstate them afterwards. This would avoid a lot of stress when you discover that they are all gone!

I hope that this helps,
Mike.

Mike Gibbs: This website doesn't have any employees, it is an independent technical help site which has no connection with any broadcaster or transmitter company, or anyone else in involved in the running of Freeview. The owner of the website posts under the name Briantist, all other contributions are from individuals who have volunteered their own time to try and assist others.

The transmitter engineering notifications come from a feed provided by BBC Engineering, which only carries reports of faults and planned maintenance affecting BBC services, so it is unlikely a fault on the PSB2 multiplex would appear unless it also affected PSB1 or PSB3.

You have given the link for the Hastings transmitter page, not the Hastings Old Town relay which is the page you have actually posted on. C22 is the PSB3 mux from the Hastings transmitter, the Hastings Old Town relay has PSB3 on C48 as shown on this page.

Mike Gibbs:

As StevensOnln1 has said the Hastings Old Town relay transmitter multiplex channels are lsied at the top of the page.
(The main Hastings transmitter uses different channels as listed on its page).

If the signals have not returned when you try a further retune, I'd suggest both of phone Freeview on 0808-100-0288 and complain that the transmitter is faulty (not ask them if there's a fault). They can pass on the details to Arqiva who do the transmitter maintenance. You may well have to be persistent, they can be difficult with the excuse people haven't reported it! A lot of people wouldn't know how to.

If you hit a brick wall there, ring ITV on 020-7157-3000 and explain to them that Freeview seem unwilling to investigate the fault.
