The symbol shows the location of the Crystal Palace (Greater London, England) transmitter which serves 4,490,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Are there any planned engineering works or unexpected transmitter faults on the Crystal Palace (Greater London, England) mast?

Hooray Hooray... I can also confirm that I can at last now get com 7 (channel 55) . Why did it take so long to sort it? As I could already get com 8 (channel 56) but not com 7 I knew that the problem couldn't be " down my end".
I can receive both Crystal Palace and Hannington at my location and the signals before the frequency changes were about the same from both transmitters. After CP channel changes I had to replace my existing A group aerial for a log periodic which then allowed me to receive London Live again.
I have noticed that the signals that I am getting on com 7 and com 8 are coming from the Hannington transmitter so I assume that neighbours that only have an aerial pointing to Crystal Palace must still be having reception problems with coms 7 and 8 especially if they still have an A group aerial

"That's Surrey" - We can get That's Surrey but it is very weak - it is Programme 7 using Channel 33. Which transmitter is transmitting Channel 33? We are in Guildford.

StevensOnln1's. Thank you for your response. The reason I asked is that I could not believe why the signal strength of "That's Surrey" was so very very weak being transmitted from Guildford. We are only about 5 miles from the transmitter. Our main HD TV (although tuned to Crystal Palace) receives Guildford transmissions well - we can only get "That's Surrey" by going through our recorder as that seems to act as a form of amplification. Our other non HD TV is tuned to Guildford via a loft aerial with amplifier - receiving good Guildford signals BUT NONE from "That's Surrey". WHY ARE THEY TRANSMITTING SUCH A LOWPOWER SIGNAL?

Chris Roberts: The local mux uses QPSK modulation which is more robust than the modulation used by the main multiplexes, thus requiring a lower power level to provide coverage equivalent to the main muxes. Some of the local muxes are also restricted in power output and direction in order to prevent interference with other transmitters using the same frequency (the local muxes are often broadcast on frequencies which are only clear for use in their primary target coverage area and not necessarily the entire area covered by the main muxes from the same transmitter). If you provide a full postcode we will be able to see the predicted coverage for your location which will show whether you are predicted to have good reception of the Guildford local mux.

Hi StevensOnlin1's
Thanks for your interesting and technical reply. Our full post code is: GU1 2XH. Since I emailed you the recorder has retuned itself and deleted "That's Surrey" from its programme list - so I cannot get it on either TV. The HD one still shows it on its programme list but it only gets occasional pictures. The lower tech non HD TV does not even recognise the programme - can a non HD TV receive the programme? Both TVs get "London Live" (Programme 8) - we can get LONDON BUT NOT SURREY!!. Not too worried but interested to know why.
Thanks - Chris.

Chris Roberts: The Digital UK checker shows that you should be able to get good reception of the Guildford local mux on UHF channel 33 (broadcast using DVB-T and receivable on any TV/box/PVR regardless of support for receiving HD channels). It sounds like your main aerial is pointed at Crystal Palace, but which transmitter is the loft aerial feeding your second TV pointed at? Crystal Palace is on a compass bearing of 56 degrees, with the aerial elements (little rods) horizontal (going side to side) whereas Guildford is on a bearing of 248 degrees witht the elements vertical (going up and down).

Thanks again - The second TV (Non HD) uses a loft aerial with amplifier - vertically polarised pointing to the Guildford transmitter. Yes the main TV is pointing at Crystal Palace BUT it receives Guildford very strongly - except Channel 33! As a matter of interest what Kw power is transmitted by Channel 33? Thanks Chris.

This may help some people, if it works it's a cheap, simple solution and is certainly worth trying. I live in East London and have a fixed aerial in the loft that has worked well for years but will not receive channels 55 and 56 and is sometimes dubious about channel 35 containing London Live etc. from Crystal Palace. The other day I accidentally discovered that an old indoor TV aerial I had lying about can receive channels 55 and 56 and even channel 35 when the rooftop aerial is just showing blocks of colour. So in the 21st century I have reverted to that old staple of the 60s and 70s of wandering round the living room with an indoor aerial trying to find the best location for the signal. I was thinking of changing the fixed aerial in the loft but am not keen on this if the channels are anticipated to be changing again in a few years.

Allan Cousens: If you don't have satellite or cable you may be eligible to have your loft aerial replaced with a wideband type free of charge, which can be arranged by contacting the Freeview Advice Line (see link below). The only future planned changed which affect Crystal Palace are that COM7 & COM8 are expected to close by 2022, there have been no other frequency changes announced for Crystal Palace.
