Jb38, thanks for all the time you've spent on my problem. I appreciate you going out of your way to provide me the answers. Would like to say more at this juncture but am refraining from doing so, for reasons I am unable to share right now but hope to be able to express at some point soon. Thanks again.martyh.

martyh: That's no problem, and pleased to have been able to provide some answers, although its a pity that the answers given had to be of a negative nature.
The other thing that I forgot to mention being, that at least the problem was confirmed as being more of a hardware issue and not of a software up-datable one, that being most likely why there has never been any "over air" updates provided in an attempt to correct this difficulty, as apparently (and with myself being unaware of) this issue was known about back in 2009 when a number of these models were known to fail after the Granada region switched over to 8k operation.

Thanks JB38
Will have a go at the weekend as I'm getting a lot of flak from Mrs T who thinks my time could be better spent on more important things

yes jb38, copy that. I have been amazed by the depth of expertise available here, and never thought that the technical aspects of such a subject could actually be interesting, albeit only out of my need to qualify the issues associated with my tv!

Morning. I've re-tuned in line with the switchover date of 18 April, and was pleased to find out that all channels appeared to be working. I've now switched on this morning and, whilst a retune locates all normal channels, the picture quality is either extremely poor or non-existent. Is there anything I should be doing other than re-tune again later today? Thanks in anticipation of help!

Not that it will help others, but I had no problems retuning here in St Albans on three machines:
Samsung TV
Panasonic BluRay recorder
Microsoft Media Center (Windows 7)
All three, including the latter were fine the morning after switchover.

Well for the record I've lost all free view from crystal palace today not sure what that's all about but the signal since the switch over has defiantly halved and both my myself and long time engineer are stumped
This is the very first time since 1970 i can remember a down time from crystal palace and yet they tell me everything is sweet their end
