Shirley: Can you tell me the make and model of the "DVD". I'm not sure if you just mean a cheap DVD player or a Freeview+ DVD recording device.
From what you've said I would return "the DVD" to the store where you got it and ask for one that works properly.

antonio46: You've got so many things mixed up there.
Virgin Media continues to operate the UK cable TV networks, but sold the channels to Sky.
Sky renamed Virgin One to CHannel One and then closed it.
The BBC operates under the EU Television Without Frontiers Directive which allows free-to-air channels to be watched and rebroadcast (for free) anywhere in the EU.
The UK is not allowed to impose taxes on people outside the UK.
