The card is activated when first inserted into the box with the serial number you supplied when you ordered the card (or worked out from your previous card details).

You do not need to connect the box to a telephone line.

The card will only work in the box with the serial number you supplied, but you can ring the 08700 541800 number (and select option 2) to change the box/card link. The re-authorization signal is sent via satellite.

James: You can view virtually all "free to view" Sky channels and you do not require a card to do it either, as the only purpose the card serves is to allocate the correct local news services for your post code rather than them covering default areas that's not applicable to were you reside.

Hi, i have noticed that my new sky system has 2 cables coming from the dish ? the older ones only had 1 ? is there any reason or purpose for the second coax?

Murf: It is so as to be able to record a different channel to the one being viewed.

Unlike with terrestrial (Freeview) where you can have one feed and be watching as many channels as you like using separate receivers, satellite requires one feed per channel being watched.

Tony Grove: The signal level showing on the sat finder only indicates that a signal has been found but NOT necessarily from the satellite required as the indications are not related to frequency, have you tried the old Sky box back on the dish again just to make sure that its still correctly aligned?

The other point being, if your previous box was a standard Sky type then it only required one input, and so have you fitted a quad block on the dish and run an extra cable from it as is required by your new Sky+HD box? if you have then try swapping the boxes two inputs over.

I was given a dish and Sky box with card by a friend who lives in Scotland. I took it to France and it works ok - even get the Scottish news and BBc Scotland. However I can pick up VERY FEW of the channels. Ones I get via freeview in UK will not work in France. Just get a message that says I need to buy a Sky card- is this really necessary? How much would a card cost? Is the Sky box too old and maybe I need a new one?
