EBU adopts 'Principles for Internet-Connected and Hybrid Television'
The EBU believes that new hybrid systems will only deliver their full potential if they use technology that is harmonized across Europe and allows broadcasters and other content providers to link broadcast and on-demand content such as catch-up TV. The principles also forbid the overlay of third-party content or commercial communications on the television picture without the broadcaster's consent and specifiy that viewers must be abel to return to the last watched channel and have the ability to store favourites and personalised content on their TV. Will streaming TV online lead to the death of the big media players? - Media - The Guardian
Battle lines are being drawn in the US in the struggle to make serious money out of the nascent online TV market. In the US Netflix is one of the stock market's current technology darlings, increasing in value by 33 this year to a market capitalisation of 12.5bn 7.65bn, all built on the revenues from its 20 million paying customers. Netflix launched in 1997 and three years later began charging a flat fee per month for unlimited DVD rental by post with no late fees or postage costs, addingon-demand streaming of film and TV content in 2007. - guardian.co.ukwww.guardian.co.ukDiscovery blames Virgin for UKTV talks faltering - Media - guardian.co.uk
Discovery Networks was tipped to acquire the stake which is valued somewhere between 250m and 350m given a longstanding relationship with Virgin's joint venture partner BBC Worldwide. We are all in favour of the BBC World Service but do we really care I ask because there is little more than a whimper of national protest at the Coalition Government's plans to cut the World Service's budget by 16 per cent as part of its spending review. Planet Earth, co-produced with the BBC, is one of Discoverys hottest properties. BBC s World Service income should be ring-fenced - TV Radio, Media - The Independent
The Foreign Affairs Select Committee began an inquiry into the 79-year-old service after jobs and services were cut following Foreign Office funding cuts. The Government has reduced the World Service's 237 million-a-year budget by 16 per cent and ordered the BBC to fund the service from the licence fee from 2014.
