Have you noticed everythings in 3D all of a sudden Well, looks like the folks at Rupert Murdochs Sky TV did they were deep into planning to air the upcoming royal wedding in 3D until the royal family put the proverbial kibosh on it. This appears to be a company that is almost always on the wrong end of regulatory rulings. Last week, for example, a Portsmouth publican won a victory in the European courts over whether she was legally entitled to show her customers Premier League football via a satellite broadcaster from Greece, rather than the more expensive Sky. Now Sky looks set for a walloping from the Competition Commission on its movies services its preliminary view is that the broadcaster is making excess profits. - independent.co.ukwww.independent.co.ukTuesday 08 February 2011, PM
BBC iPlayer apps, coming soon to Android and iPad
There's been a lot of speculation over the last 24 hours about BBC iPlayer apps for mobile, so I wanted to clarify our plans. These apps are coming at a time when we're really beginning to see massive growth of people using BBC iPlayer on mobile devices. We're just applying the finishing touches to the apps as we speak, and all things being well we plan to have Android and iPad apps in stores by the end of the week. - bbc.co.ukwww.bbc.co.ukBBC Radio 4 Blog: The BBC Trusts review of service licences for Radio 4 and Radio 7

Judge Birss QC said on Tuesday that the process of connecting copyright infringement to a named individual based on their use of an internet address is fraught with difficulties because internet connections, or IP addresses, are often used by more than one person. That could create serious problems for copyright owners seeking to enforce their rights under the Digital Economy Act. Beyond that, copyright owners might be able to take people to court or demand that their internet connection is throttled or constrained. - guardian.co.ukwww.guardian.co.ukHauppauge nanoStick T2 PCTV 290e review | TV tuners | Reviews | PC Pro

Premier league decision could have implications for other media rights | Media | The Guardian
Her battle against Sky and the Premier League two organisations that long ago merged without any competition authority noticing has got to the European court of justice, where, unaccountably, a single German advocate recommended that the court rip up the way television rights are sold in Europe after umpteen years. Who knows what the European court will decide, but anybody who believes this will end up changing power and pricing in pay TV is the kind of person who would be prepared to be believe that Richard Keys is about to start a six-week gender awareness course sponsored by the Guardian. It's between selling TV rights to football, or whatever, on a country-by-country basis, or a pan-European basis. - guardian.co.ukwww.guardian.co.ukNews Corps Sky bid may be better off in Jeremy Hunts hands | Media | The Guardian
He has received advice from Ofcom telling him he should and most people and organisations concerned about the implications of the deal in commercial and/or public interest media plurality terms agree. For a start, the principal concerns of News Corp's commercial competitors that the company might be able to bundle services and cross-subsidise failing newspapers from Sky's booming profits, thus threatening the viability of other media operators have been examined by the European Commission and dismissed. So these questions are now effectively closed, leaving media plurality specifically over the supply and consumption of news and current affairs as the only source of potential reasons to block the deal. - guardian.co.ukwww.guardian.co.ukJeremy Hunts local TV plans let off Tory councils Shott free | Media | The Guardian
Local TV according to Nick Shott's review on behalf of Hunt is only going to be viable in the major conurbations, which are far more likely to be Labour controlled. Conservative councils in the shires including Surrey county council, which covers Hunt's rural constituency will face no such scrutiny. The point is neatly illustrated by comparing the total number of councillors elected in metropolitan borough councils which more or less correspond to the major conurbations of the proposed local television. - guardian.co.ukwww.guardian.co.ukSunday 06 February 2011, AM
