What is the m club vegan on the show today is the latest radio figures vs.

New local radio regulations to kick in what does it mean for the big commercial players list Adam fairy tales what's happened on the programme TV big weeks to send on can form.

News headlines Jake cancer puts down his cocktail and tells us more her all that post Kimberly godbolt of 3-month network talented people who takes the temperature of UK TV production edition of the media club come on in I'm going to say Ted Danson where is interesting because he's got a podcast and I'm not sure we really need lots of celebrities doing more podcast for the interview interview other celebrities was quite good and this week.

He had Kelsey Grammer on and I was on it's like being aware of this apparently.

I've been a bit of a falling out between my made-up and there was lots of apologies first.

He's got a great voice dancing and so it's enormously listening Kelsey Grammer's not got a bad voice either so for an hour and a half is actually lovely.

He was zooming.in from Hungary where is making a film because it's actually Ted with sometimes Woody Harrelson is the it's a podcast and it was just really nice and it was interesting is I think the podcast is probably dropped earlier this week, but then it takes about a day or so for the press to suddenly read someone someone somewhere listen to him and all that a story and then suddenly even today as we record this there are loads of all the all the usual tabloid or somebody picked up on this story and it's kind of listen to this like a day and a half ago.

Where have you been guys? So it's quite funny, but it is a nice story.

It's a lovely podcast.

There's some pretty good back episodes, Kristen Bell was a lovely one who they they made the good place a few years ago and yeah, it is people interview my mate, but I was just a really nice one and it was very heartfelt and very ordered it ended up staying to religion and all kinds of things it would not go where you would expect that.

Will put a link in the shower, so yes Ted can join also be used in a bar that's that's handy as well.

Would you like to give some membership to this week would like you please to put Havana markings name on the door.

Havana is a director.

She's just released her latest films with the feature.com undercover exposing the far right which is possibly jaw-dropping and the it's Dave he was supposed to be at the London film festival, but the organisers call vet due to safety concerns which she was it a shame but also for the highlights how remarkable and so dangerous the whole thing was and I just think well, she deserves membership safety.

I mean the contributors probably we should we should let them come in.

I can't quite believe I'm going to be right now.

If you haven't seen it.

It's on Channel 4 now who did

After sun festival I don't you to watch it again is very important doc I will put links that as well.

So yes definitely can both join radio this week pretty radio regulations obviously topic.

Can I close to my heart? It's it's a bit cheeky but I think I actually tells us a lot about the changing nature of Media Adam what was the government changed and what's been through their by Ofcom yes, I have this Media actor of various elements of the media acts which went through Parliament trendy wash up before the general election in the summer and effectively it removes a lot of the localisation or that was released the programs being originated in the local area so you're in a most local commercial station to talk and have requirements on things like local news exactly where the programs and made and it effectively allows for complete networking in a

No, probably do know the local news in Dundee local weather and the Appleby localised as well in in accordance with how the makes the most journey and have been happening for 20 years or more with God now.

Got to the point where the big groups particularly global and power wireless have a little bit of a few decorations and some some other operators can decide entirely hi there on the radio station many local programator and power have been pretty quick out the blocks and maintenance around Greatest Hits radio.

Yeah, that's right been recently you have basically one probably quite chunky show on in a drive time.

There's been using a lot or sometimes it be the Breakfast Show and they are yellow they are fully going for and Kate Thornton is taking the place of something like 6 or 8 other shows across the network, so they Greatest Hits radio will be the same for everybody everywhere everywhere they hear it and that sort of you know.

Devil my son that the incident the flag as strong in south of people who lost their jobs also I get messages from people asking me what you have you heard go bald with a big decision for them about what happens on heart smooth and capital will have elements of local or regional programming themselves have play Sutton very much local FM networks now called the hits hits radio and they have not the correct shows did you think locals all gone across all of these or do you think the same value in in doing like Radio 2 ratings suspect it will be on a case-by-case basis to be perfectly honest where you've got a really good breakfast and it's beating your position and it's really driving listening locally then you know the frankly they'll be a cost calculator coming up does it?

Play some money by not having them and but you will lose some listenership potentially by cutting that show on the other hand the save costs.

You know having a single show may be making it bigger may be putting that money into a star presents or something you like it sounds very cutthroat and it is very cutthroat because that's where we've got two.

There are some really strong shows I think it's always interesting when you get to Someone Like Scotland or something where they have you know people do want to hear local local programming and you know you might make a different decision in some of those regions, but I do know you know the hit I have got some Big Show's on that and you know you potentially giving that up and figures that came out yesterday.

I get a global and power is a whole year of the big commercial radio groups had a pretty good time Everlast over last 12-months power pretty pretty static.

Do you think that's going to to?

Putting out or vagaries of the radio changes why is that the case to say I mean power has had a bit of a ride with greatest hits and sort of been growing that obviously a year or so they got came Bruce and you know he's still stuck to 4 million also now.

You know that is a Big Show for them, but that's kind of picked out now.

You know the Greatest Hits is kind of flattened because they were turning on new stationery brand another station to become a to say anything in life to rebrand and it's on the greatest hits hits or flat and a little bit of a period of time where now you can occur.

They get it reach global I'm not sure that's that doesn't look like it's happening at the moment global is a bit of a step ahead of where's our is so.

Whether these changes or make a difference or not.

I mean that definitely have been changes.

We seem some jobs.

Go at our particularly in some of their programming.

I think all of that probably all of that's really too early to say you know particularly and I'm getting to the nerdiness of these are 6 months figures, so it's quite a while sometimes for the changes to roll through into the numbers a blog post the other day a line that valve in a press release a couple of weeks ago and it was sort of a group practise of a German company of describing all of their markets in audio balanced growth strategy based on Eileen broadcasting business and investing in digital audio offerings as well as enhance the efficiency in collaboration.

Please call Browns have you look at Magical absolute or kiss the main source of Mother Brown a great time in in the past few things like Absolute 80s overtaking Absolute Radio the network is kind of doing fine and actually I think it's possibly have it's something strong is numbers in the case of absolute.

I should display my used to work in there, but you know is that just moving around you know I'm going to use the shuffling deck chairs around on the Titanic by just have it is it's kind of do you think that is you know growth extra growth coming from it and you know I don't know you know you can make things Eileen we will see Media groups kind of things down.

That's just kind of make it as a fish as possible and this efficiency need to grow from I'm not sure I think you know you still need to do something be creative.

I think and some of the success.

UCL suggested being creative is it does kind of paint off of pots of money into competitions now? It's like every single network flip between is it just a huge answer the phone and tell me how much is a price for a big part of a cash competition across all of the radio station what they call the real networks then you out and I think one of the challenges is there so much money this week if you if you want to enter £2.50 a text and can also ring it's free this week in a smaller print of that, but it doesn't seem special anymore.

I previously give my 400g an amazing thing, but it's on my PlayStation so you're not really using it to compete and sort of the presenters get a bit bored saying it and it doesn't really have the the push I mean it makes so much money from this then.

I think and look they're not the only ones doing this.

You know you can turn on daytime ITV you know Good Morning Britain or whatever and they've always got these shows and you know it is giveaways and it's kind of you know what's different.

What's special about it.

You know if you look at the way you can do with radio promotions.

I can be enormously powerful.

You can do creative things and make interesting programming out of it and do stunts and all that kind of stuff then this is profitable.

It's clearly profitable and you know all their marketing out feels like it's just about his we can win a lot of money this week and so it just comes back to format or some sort of stuff to make you more efficient than that kind of makes it dollar in dollar.

Again, it's so what when we can do competitions and events as they don't answer them know what's the passive entertainment value of it.

So can you play along at home? What are the people? Are you not going to be playing on at home that encourages you to take to take part as well, but if you make it to the super efficient and just using it for cash which is why there is a growing a very significant grain part of their business and get to the addicted addicted to that my anything else to call you or BBC had a good course.

I think we saw obviously it was a big quarter for new and sports my soul Radio 4 DY5 live really exceptionally well.

They're up to 6 million for the first time since over 10-years or 10 years or set this point as the 30th anniversary.

I think it's obviously they had you know the end of the euros Olympics Paralympics beginning of the football season golf open I mean there was a lot of sport there.

So you know that place.

But you know sport doesn't he'll be all the end or you saw you know talkSPORT took a little bit of a dip but you know and other news stations did well.

I mean interestingly she been and it did better than talk radio presenters talk now if you're a News UK and you saw that she been used to jump ahead of you.

I think so, I think I'm interested.

You got those three there and you know news music.

I've got two of those and it's kind of like you know and they're very similar sized actually and but if you look at how much they must cost in comparison to what I mean.

I say that GB news is lost.

How much weight loss this yeah, it was quite a lot.

So that's music.

I having a lot more efficient than with their creative but I think we was got a little bit careful you know.

Criticise the methodology whatever but there might be some people watching TV at taking up a radiator when you've got the same thing with the same content also some of them on people m records passive audio to work out what you what you've listened to and the open some questions about the TV audio and what's recorded and listen to radio ask them about how that works if you've got the radio wristwatch and that's measuring your radio listening if you're watching TV news on the two does that pick it up and add it to the route to the radio figures so I think it was all these things get more complex all the village cases pop up with me will be back with you shortly, but it was mipcom this week's ITV makers channels and distributors to send on can to sell their formats to the international market deadlines Jake kanter was there and join us down.

From can I think from his house he is back.

Did you have a good time in the sun was shining all week at it felt like British summer time was just the weather so that was good but but yes it was a successful trip and interesting market.

I think it was perhaps a bit quieter than it has been in previous years and there are lots of different reasons for that.

I think no there's clearly some budget and belt tightening going on across the Industries will be well aware of I think that the fact that miptv isn't taking place next year the know the rise of doing these things online and taking meeting around via video calls means that these markets are sort of Leicester Central Leicester urgent than they once were but they remain a really important.

Trading post the industry a great opportunity for people to get together do deals and to talk shop and that's what it felt like this week was all about people saying that it was survive until 25 in television, but this year.

It's stay in the mix till 2026.

Would you agree with that? So this this phrase has really taken root in the industry the survive till 25 2025 and I think it was from the Guardian peace and quiet recently I actually think it's quite a productive and unhelpful quote the idea that things are suddenly going to turn a corner next year or just not true and I would say the same of 2026.

I think what the industry has gone through is a significant readjustment your budgets have been tightened and the type of content that we are seeing commissioned right across the world and importantly.

Blisters in the UK and and the US has changed dramatically and yeah, it's going to be a tricky period for the foreseeable future, where is this sense at mid-market shows are not what they wants were and wishing very high production and a low in production.

I think there is some truth in that and that is one that that that theory that is being constantly talked about but I do not think that the survival 2025 Frasier wiki helpful and I don't forget applied to many of the conversations.

I was having a minute so obviously UK exports you to answer television who who was making a big splash who was who really going through out there.

I think it was quite interesting because the presence of big UK producers and Studios was was somewhat stripped back this year.

So usually you would you associate minute.com with big lavish stands on the palais by the sea, but that quite wasn't quite case this year.

I think some of the big themes that I took away was visiting.

Yeah.

There's a continued restaurants around risk in the market and particulars Forest Unscripted formats are concerned we saw a big lean into nostalgia and nostalgia was King so you've got companies like Warner Brothers Discovery their big new formats at the market were Harry Potter baking show and a friend's game show and then and this was very striking actually on the palais.

Write the big building with a red car, Battlefront BBC Studios have their standing there was an enormous poster of the Weakest Link and I must say standing on.

Looking up at a post it felt like I've been transported back to the year 2012 quite strange Sensation I have to say that's an old business for the BBC Studios around the world Ben Classics yeah, I think they're always going to be creative on formats that emerged these these markets but it was dominated by what we know and loving and what we've seen in the past and ancillary reiterating on well-loved brands.

I mean one of the busiest at the market was stranded on an island, which is from the creators of married at first sight.

It's kind of survivor meets married at first sight.

Big new show as being picked up by the BBC here in the UK and even that as I say that's that's a new format, but it has echoes of things have gone before and also I think it has raised questions for the BBC itself produces.

Who will tell you that the BBC shouldn't be buying format from other countries.

They should be trying to encourage the creation of a new generation of British intellectual property.

So there are a few moans and groans about the BBC going big for particular show on next year.

We're going to strange you at mipcom Island that's all Beaker new formats.

Thank you for the update and we'll see you soon in Ireland

From construction and Engineering to communications and manufacturing experience and passion can build a better tomorrow find a job in nuclear and you'll find something extraordinary.

This is you clear in your power visit destination nuclear welcome back to the media club, what we've been talking about this.

Well.

I thought for Greatest Hits radio presenter Andy Golding who is featured with the radio times was published received the news that his show was to end with the local radio changes that we talked about earlier complex arrangements there for that in November City University is hosting a British podcast Awards showcase hearing from a selection of this year's called winners.

Victoria Derbyshire tickets for free and link in our show notes want to wash his hands of the paper he like in the Scott Trust be over the Observer to an unwanted and charismatic neighbour arriving at a sedate family dinner which newspapers newspapers with you invite to a dinner party brandwise Who be a fun person to have got the Daily Star would be quite a laugh at them.

I get drunk right next to the ft.

I mean I don't quite let anyone from the Daily Mail and people obviously is.

Individuals gaming jobs both full time jobs freelance jobs TVs been in a flux for a long period now, what's the current status are you seeing the market? It's still very complicated, but I think the sense amongst the freelance community is a sort of and again.

I'm talking so bored but it is definitely polarised at the people who are doing well and haven't been out of work are doing really well and still haven't been out of work and they seem to be in tullamore premium content is there a verticals villa? Just have done ok, so is that drama and Netflix drama music related things seem to still be getting permission in volume that people working in those areas are doing fine.

Summer acutely aware that a lot of people are not doing so well and others have just been head down and they haven't seen it and the people who are not doing so well unfortunately.

I feel this kind of reluctant acceptance now the situation that things have changed are changing and they need to either kind of reskill or pivot or find something else and come back when the market is kind of stabilised and obviously those conversations are all very difficult and then Converse Leeds freelancers and with the people who are in house with very much feeling that they are incredibly pushed and overworked and and not to mention.

You know pretty nervous ultimately feeling grateful to have a job, but being worked harder than ever before well.

Someone experiencing a kind of survivors guilt something with been talking to me.

Feeling guilty that they are in work still but you know I think some casualties of the situation as well are people from underrepresented groups and you know that happens unfortunately in times where the economy is struggling or uncertainty that you know commissioners in hiring managers and they kind of go back to the safe bet you know what they do the safe band which is incredibly boring and I roll in juicing for many but unfortunately is is right and it's I guess up to companies like us and you know people who was having those from underrepresented groups by the way you are not junior not Known yet, but when the stakes are so high because there are so few commissions and high-value and they have to be delivered to have two amazing and I have to be hugely hit rating you know you can sort of see why people defaulting to that excellent director that either Netflix or apple has suggested.

It worked with before it's just a shame yes and all the UK broadcasters soap2day.tv and channel for BBC a little bit better at this is cyclical and structural do it because I love you like when it comes back.

Is it is it going to come back at the same level or has there been a source of reset with whether the advertising money change the lights on lights compact different and I don't doubt that things will come back better and there will be more work to varying degrees next year, but it's still will look different and I don't think people still know what that will look like you, but I think the things like terms of people have been working with UK TV and Channel 4 now.

I've just signed up with us on a diversity partnership initiative which is fantastic.

Hoping to answer this issue with people in a only hiring the people that have worked with before whereby you know they are effectively funding searches through us for production companies to use to me from diverse backgrounds who have never met before which is brilliant and a really positive news story.

We just need that happening more across the board.

If someone is coming into the industry or vaporizer need to sort of reskill.

What what should people be concentrating on a one of the things they should be skilling up with to give themselves the best chance.

I feel like you need to find your niche and really go deep on that.

Yeah, I do that's kind of hedging your bets because you got to pick the right lane.

That's why people in True Crime or in you know really premium Dark Souls II global hit series have been fine and they didn't necessarily make that.

Choice 5 years ago to to be good at that, but they're the ones who are still in work and doing well now, but I do think if you are really you know really well versed in sport and get to know you you bring something different to the table when you're at least something that is incredibly relevant compared to all the other show runners for example or heads creative directors and when you're going into outbox pottery painting interview at pitch international sounds like a no-brainer but when there's so many people who are applying for one single job.

I think you've gotta find absolutely everything that you can to be the one that turns the head and also do doing your homework.

I mean so many people who are getting interviews are still not watching loads of telly and I still up to chat.

You know having research that production company and right now if you get a chat, you got it absolutely wow because even then.

Getting it because we've got to do something that stands out from the crowd of people careers radio on audio of podcasting is giving people up.

She's more research about podcast and podcast consumptions.

Is it different to other people consume linear radio is I mean.

I think it's about fitting in your day.

Obviously you can listen to podcasts on the go.

That's kind of the different to a lot of things.

I think also the wealth of choice you've got that that's the thing I mean I'm gonna hopefully not too nice and you can absolutely you know own your niche in in in that world and cost of entry is low anyone can start podcast and a lot of people have as a consequence and that makes you know that that leads to its own challenges, but you certainly you know you.

Got that that that Brett forget that comes from that and the other thing I think is the explosion of video in podcasting and different audiences want different things I eat a lot podcast cos he was somewhat a gas.

They have to do a video that is it essential for a podcast to have to be filmed think depends who your what you're doing and who you're aiming it at I think unit not every podcast format is going to work.

You know there's a decent amount of drama.

I'm not sure I mean you're making a television programme that point yellow if you're trying to visualise it or on the other hand if I'm if I'm yet.

So so 15 to 34 year olds.

I probably going to need a visual element of the very least.

I think is a promotional strategy and you know if it's a chat show start podcast then you might as well as I would like this and but at some cameras up and you know you know I come.

Audio background and let you know 5-years kind of a guy said that but that's the reality and the consumption patterns are different.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people in when I'm watching YouTube video watching it's on a tab and they think something else in another tab key on a laptop or whatever all it's on a telly in the background well.

You know them reaching around on a Saturday morning in the home or whatever but not necessarily like you might watch a big budget drama TV series but but yeah, I mean I think you've got you've got to think of it, so don't particularly for those kind of This podcast now and we put that on YouTube on Spotify where you can consume video and all of our listeners would have been listeners before the videos of our popped up as look at some of the stats and reducing remind me sharing with the audience about a third of the people that consume the podcast watch some form of the video so a bit of it some of it or love it and the

A minute consumes about 20% of its video still to wake you send audio for an audience that and it consumes it forever as audio actually easily opting into the video side.

I think it's sort of much stronger sometimes the people imagine on YouTube to watch a podcast listening to forever.

I don't know but ultimately what you're saying as well.

I don't know it's you know it's to convert people from social converting people from watching social clip into finding your podcast is actually it's quite hard because it's not a one-to-one.

It's a difficult and we also remember what I was supposed to be cooking like right now.

I need to do that 17 steps before I actually follow podcast earlier from.com.

So we've created a mipcom related quiz.

Let's see how much attention you been playing at the trades this week.

It's entitled mipcom or chat GPT in light of the news this week.

The ITV is going to be using AI to shape.

It's commissioning strategy.

I'd like you to tell me which of the shows I'm pitching are from GPT or whistle.com this week.

We'll take it in turns.

They Kimberly you can go first replay.com or write a tonic to Ireland's this new series takes a group of young people Who Experience intimacy anxiety to a paradise resort to undergo group and individual therapy mipcom or is it to GPT

It made me very much cringe when I thought I saw but that of course is very Channel 4 and when you read more about it.

I do think they are just playing with the old title and then get you in through the door with the shock factor and it will be about much more than that will certainly I hope it does Richard Branson should be because he does have presents Pictionary the TV series adapted from the Mattel name mitko more chatty PTL apparently are absolutely rinsing her entire movie the answers to success and Barbie they just pushing on Michael McIntyre is loyal will case navigating Quorum chaos and personal struggles.

On BBC One More Chance your beauty and I'm going to go chat gpt-4 that could work we're all good idea Ludwig pizza house the ultimate dinner party with Jamie Oliver for Sky mipcom.

Orchy BT Sky 1 disappeared a while back to me on that because it's got no knowledge of history that very good.

It was a music channel 4 that the patient of popular US drama monk is that there was a lot of adaptation Chatham it? I heard so I'm going to go make it is.

Joinery television very soon mind the gap a high-energy word based game show for ITV where contestants must complete phrases or sentences the clock to win a jackpot Anderson deck sho.com watch activity absolutely no idea.

I'm not sure mind the gap really travels because I live in London say chat GPT but I don't know it is very well done.

So together we get to work on format conversion process for next year's MacColl I think producer Matt yes, well.

I'm very noisy on LinkedIn find me on LinkedIn Anton to people.to website and we are talking about happy bringing in posh Club podcast back so go find out if you haven't already on the back issues.

Yeah, exactly.

Me rambling 20 senior people in the industry being incredibly vulnerable about how I got where they got too so I'm looking at looking for victims for next series on an atom and make sure you have your membership of the media.

Just go to the media club.com that's my club.com and give us your email address producer was Matt Hill that it was a real production with video support from podcast Discovery
