Restrictions apply for certain countries hello welcome to the media club your breathing for the week ahead in your host Matt Deegan on the show today is Matt Holding Back sky broadcaster relationship between sky and the streamers on the programme are freelancers across.
I said to getting the mental health support they need manori, ravindran, London correspondent at the Anchor explains all that person the media quiz we celebrate the use of Sound that's all coming up in the media club come on in the week.
Who would you like to nominate from this week in media to Tollerton would actually like to do I am not sure I would have come down and he says they are but I was at
The prime video trailblazers eventually the treatments for fear of you were there, but it was sort of this big thing to celebrate celebrate women's details in the lead up to it for you coming all the people are coming and it was a really really impressive event a lot of telling that they're actually want to give out give a shout out to meet your friend and of the Premier Inn because it's already here a little icon sulky actually shout somebody else from stage, but she got from understand it was she conceived the idea and executed and it was really good.
I mean that's really always buy in to use of feminism, but at the same time you know they do have a lot of going tomorrow few months giving shows and I thought it was a good way of saying I don't mean you should have a great job from the streams here.
Isn't there there is yeah, but obviously prime video UK has been sold MySQL update with you know.
Jensoo to mention that as well I doing the doing the Showcase in to see that you know whatever the Grand Tour spin-off as well.
It's ok.
We'll membership accepted stamp who would you like to recognise this week? So I'm looking to the US into the market there and it's a look at the the numbers come every month at the moment in US halfway.
Audience is to streaming services which is very fragmented lots and lots to play on YouTube number one Netflix number to but both of those sub 10% and then the rest is cable and so parent broadcast.
I think you still big America but going down so the nominations to Bill morrow.
Who is CEO of DirecTV and
Just bought out dish and sling which makes them the largest pay-tv operator in the US companies merging customers and it's importance of content owners what you need is you need choice if the streamers get to dominate then they will start determining what guess commission does start timing you need multiple suppliers in a competition in your choice so we need pay TV to continue to exist for this.
I think we'll get pay TV few more years in the American market.
I think it actually lasts a long time.
You make the more robust.
I have more scale.
They'll be able to make some savings of course so I think pay-tv might well do very well in the US now that it's come in and made that excellent ability is welcome cards, Carlton television.
I want to start with a lawsuit from Sky that's just been filed against Warner Brothers Discovery
Adam Barry really good blog post about it, which will put in the show notes and the newsletter, can you tell us what's going on? So this is a Lawson's been issued by a Sky Eye to Warner Brothers and it's about Harry Potter and said he that the origin of this is that is about making or buying do you have your own pipe? So do you actually know someone else's pipes to get your content to your consumers sky have had alcohol deals with all the major Studios and that's why Sky Movies and NOW TV all the P1 movies and my Netflix has struggled a bit and hasn't got many the Hollywood Sky Atlantic has been absolutely dependant on HBO on HBO content as has the NOW TV in a Game of Thrones HBO track record of producing amazing shows has been there for many many years now Max is the strimmer that is the combined Discovery and Warner Brothers streaming.
Never markets, it's a number of European markets already, but not in the sky markets in other words of UK Germany and Italy and the reason being is the sky of the rights to the HBO so what they've done is that one of brothers who created the single Max Originals which are going on in the US Max is a strimmer in the US since got a minute sort of a 28-inch that was 1.3% of total viewing in the US so these Originals going on there, but these are outside the deal sorted if it was on normal HBO Sky Go access to them, but they sort of Originals banner.
That's in a different pot a different part and they were not including the deal because the original deal didn't include the production then went back into the subsequent amendment to the contract whereby they could access a selected number of these Originals by making investment in those Productions at a twenty five percent.
So they were allowed to have up two or more 2 or more per year however the Harry Potter series does not appear in that bucket if you look on the list of what's coming up put your money into that you would put your money when it's pretty much as your bank, so basically you know we haven't got me.
Have you got Harry Potter we need Harry Potter now the upside of all this is the actually Warner Brothers probably need sky tiny Warner Brothers because I'm getting distribution and getting new customers is very very difficult you know they can do a deal when they can be put on Sky on the Sky distribution.
That's going to help Max in the UK UK and Germany so I suspect there's going to be some sort of resolution here but clearly it will be a content disappeared from Sky it wouldn't be at a killer, but it would be damaging if HBO GO entirely alone in the UK that will also be more difficult so this is probably opening Salvo to say
Resolution and probably it's about a range in deck chairs, so that they both get a fair share of the pie at the end.
Is it complicated in the sense that very much need the output and if Max is sort of divorce from Sky if that's a problem, but also Max's got established itself in the UK probably at some point and over something like a paramount Plus has a big deal with Sky don't make them give them.
Give them good distribution for a long time now in terms of Max ultimately launching there in the UK just been a matter of when but I think what's really interesting is sort of you know I mean not sure if you are happy to see you know to see Holby City's that there next to you Andrew at Radio 4 from Discovery obviously you know this lawsuits rumbling quietly in the background the two of them.
Funny photo of them because of the vibe was so good day during production and broken up another on the present or is really are dynamic which obviously you know I think you know ultimately there's no version of the world when Max launches.
It's not available to Sky customers.
That's what I should have had that in my nose, but I'm hearing from sources that basically that means that it's an older green and Max will ultimately you know it can be offered to Sky customers.
It's just not it's not integrated within within the bundle is there also apart yes, you can pick to off the list but sort of Harry Potter is a special column that you know we don't really want to share that one but come up with another two and we'll be ok.
I think absolutely.
Potters going to be there the Jewel In The Crown right as soon as it was announced.
It was so much.
You know I'm leaving the casting call that went out a few weeks ago.
You can see the great interesting in that show and so I think it's definitely a Powerplay on the part of Sky to sort of go go forward with this last week, but I think it's quite must be really interesting in terms of behind closed doors that the continuation of that and put the old really looks like rate.
Obviously as Paul said as well you you can imagine that it is in everyone's best interest with them to reach some sort of an agreement but out of the oven like there's a really sky Style this is this is about actually rattling Sabres I mean if you don't have a loss.
So you're not serious the old is David has actually changed the stress Distribution at Warner Brothers Discovery having exclusive.
Is now about selling to multiple customers and they doing that no markets around the world now big titles being sold to multiple customers in the same market known exclusively, so cannot be on Sky if you were saying would be Ludacris but there's obviously a price of always been a bit later, but they used to be a lot more was a lot more than what sort of Skye programming I mean now.
They're only just a smorgasbord of other people's pro gaming plus support its way the whole and she's going there was a conference with a past week in Bali which sadly.
I didn't know where are tickets.
I know I know I have been and and tata Sky with their and they've got the single type of plane if they're trying to push that round all the Asian customer we got everything Disney Netflix everything bundle to hear the superamp you put WhatsApp on your platform.
It's all there one subscription customers.
Don't need to worry about where that shows and which.
Platform it's only 3 minutes on you get there so anyway.
It's all-in-one app.
It's definitely way to go because customers are getting confused now and also researchers have more than 3 services in the UK with Max coming for market.
You've already got Amazon you got Netflix you got prime video you've got paramount plus how they broadcast exactly.
How are you going to get into the market? You know they need some help with sponsoring out there people are consuming entertainment in terms of day of the Jackal that's a huge huge campaign right.
That's what else.
Choking back you know but I've got of things do seem to have kind of gone under the radar even really good show with Johnny Flynn braids that came out last year I believe and I completely disappeared Without a Trace I think it's a matter of visibility and maybe with Talent getting more anymore and to you know David has Brad mean and range and whatnot maybe maybe that's the way for them so dramatic long time does it come with the money and let's go stateside CNN has launched a paywall on the same day that reuters bounce that they're doing it as well, but in the run-up to the election u.s.
Election.
This is a good time for those people to turn up a polish every week there seems to be a new media store which premier print product or whatever it is.
Is that m shutting down the stairs in traditional outlets? It's this is what your card has obviously in the past.
Plastic to make it a premium product that to The Failed miserably in it and it close, but I think for the news offering There is obviously demand for that in the run-up to elections exactly as you say the timing of it is probably not a coincidence, but it's just a matter of you know whether people find enough value and in what in what is behind the paywall ultimately My Name by bright through apis.
That are in the English courses is similarly it is it is it can be quite frustrating because even when you get your sources and people sort of wanted to get news stories out there because of what that is is a challenge right.
It's changed that you have to be quiet around and soul ultimately people will my story that is easily accessible to consumers rights so I think we have to use up the students to think about the angles well.
Behind a paywall you know how do you how do you turn this navigate around a lot from Mark Thompson needing to reduce lights c Nesbitt's model? I can't depend on the cash that comes from cable companies in the us forever.
It's a top 10 website News websites in end.com the right to do the Old New York Times PlayBook on on this one to you may have been servicing the Debt alone is not a watering number so I'll be under pressure to improve his P&L I'm sure that's the case you have to say is that in the US of course subscriptions now become the norm I mean people subscribe to everything and you know that you need to be something was a bit unusual now.
It's the normal model and so they're going to market where there's an acceptance of subscription the prices are pretty low at 3 for booking a month.
So I can see why people who really want that quality and its brands are the subscribe thing is that was a clue really in this quote from pawhuska bent who's the president of writers who said this will enable spanned reached affordable prices with a Lance to invest in reporting the really important thing there.
Is it brings him already, so I can pay for the professional journalism you got a page unless you have some time to do about the story cost money.
So you need money to produce a quality product danger desert type way although the good journalism.
Is is locked away behind the how do you baby news light consumers.
How do they get a unique quality democratic contact? No I think I am in there will be some free content on both sides, but we don't know how much but no you're right.
I'm in the risk of having sex behind a paywall then those that may be most need to see it won't and you know clearly you know the big worry.
Is that people believe.
So cold on social media networks does not properly reserved is inaccurate is is fake and we need proper Jonas doing property on the steelwork businesses sometimes.
I don't want to subscribe to a Nutella out loud love to read that story no people going to pay you know the however however much not so much the change without making it an easy thing that doesn't seem that I've got to go to my mobile phone app and confirm transaction and another story featuring Warner time is Carl Warner at formerly respected commissioner at Channel 4.
He's swapping sides to that he said he's off to BBC Studios which is an interesting move out.
Obviously he left channel 4 earlier this year has popped over to studios to effectively it's quite interesting rheumatism.
Long form together lots departments having a pulled you think he is obviously the the Crown Jewels IP want to go night p.
I think it's interesting that if you look at the Studio businesses in the UK the BBC Studios and ITV Studios are making good money in ITV when they do the numbers in the you saw the greatest growth and revenue some ITV studio not from the broadcast business is evidence that there's money to be made in making content of British content does travel very well and selling it round I'm at BBC Studios is being asked to up.
It's game to come up more format and there's also called the Relentless Push by the BBC into young format which car will do very very well and that's the licence fee so I think if he can be given the freedom and maybe he will come up with another hit and that's what we obviously grateful BBC Studios had quite a lot hit involved in Strictly
Longest ever commission that the BBC the public service and when he was there any part of his new team is sort of adapting international for the UK just ordered the BBC to be doing that I suppose it's just part of the market.
We have seen things going the other way round and obviously with something like with ghost and I know for sure you're in the last year did the US become a huge source of Focus for them? It is it is quite interesting that you know even looking at something like that potentially coming back here with big kind of hoping that he hasn't really I'm not really sure it necessarily picks up traction here as much.
I think it's fair to say like in terms of big us shows being remake year to usually so different one of the other direction but but yeah that will be quite I think Studios is obviously.
He starts wedding November 8th December so I think with the two of them in places to use the keyboard the meeting as well.
Yeah, I think more to come I suppose I'll have them with just heading that out that I probably have for for a long time.
I think UK so much but for them to really be successful.
They have to be a truly operation is to do this as a as a massive international play.
This is part of immersion Tim reading this you know giving his background as head of the commercial division in the past and he can see where the money's being made the world to big place the BBC is Brandon away so much more respected outside the UK that is in the UK so BBC production has got a lot of traction and as you were saying a BBC America's now doing very very well, so
Tell me about this of course is does he think this is a way of may be coping with what a going to be licence fee settlement of the less favourable even with the current government has more life in more favourable to the BBC today will be a limit to what they can do the BBC's got to find money from somewhere and maybe this is a future funding source to pay for it and you will always be like that and after these messages hello Media publishing is Patrick here from podcast Discovery the podcast this week our team have been thinking about the BBC they want an awful lot of British podcast Awards does that mean that you're so should be more like that from using your existing inventory to learn what your audience want or simply writing the best Awards submission find out what we can all learn from the BBC podcast discovery.com that's forecast discovery.com.
What does the movie June and the media club having commonwealth course they're both films in beautiful 4K and what I know timothée chalamet.

I haven't had the best week after a taxi carrying editor Ian Hislop had its Windows smashed, but it's
As first thought rather mechanical fault with the car's engine and never left the instant gave many echoes of a Charlie hebdo style attack James Harding net worth at the Observer this week.
Can't face redundancies if tortoise do take over the Sunday paper giving history of a newspaper takeovers in the country.
It might be hard to make the case and former Media reporter at the gym Waterson has published his first story on london-centric his new local journalism project he promises no clickbait.
No Oregon spring strings.
Just a quality original journalism, London folk singer on the ownership of the Standard newspaper.
He's managed to doorstep proprietor Afghani Left 4 Dead at receiving the message from the law this is on Twitter at your ex colleagues.
Tell me the general feeling was you are a prick my stuff is still with me and Paul I gather you just want a new fast Channel in your 63rd territory.
It says here which
Voices of East popped up on yes, this is really exciting because it's actually includes the UK so here.
I am running International Business and I'm in Africa and I mean in Singapore and other five faces and can't see the products I can actually said so it's a fast channel called video game Heroes in the UK Italy in Italian of COX-2 in Spanish for kids and it's got two things like Sonic and Donkey Kong ROBLOX nonsense that so it's aimed at kids at the 60120.
It's the first time left as you founded the only issue.
Of course is how much have the game but it's a great watch and I was very nervous actually looks really good very pleased that earlier on demand.
What is the sword combination of both of them sort of together free advertising supported TV is really it's a channel which you don't get enough to pay at point of use.
Sounds like a new model model and you go to events and she'll be on the same unit fast is Everest without far.
I think some people cannot sleep for by the wayside, but it's in point is that people like Samsung and LG and hisense who together represent about 85% of the total TV ship to the world putting up their own TV services you know the in in Piccadilly Circus that huge billboard has been Samsung TV plus.
I mean there be going for it sometimes invisible.
We think about the skies and the Maxes but actually they own a real estate they do they are lovely to me.
That's why I realise that equipment manufacturers are the new Gatekeepers so this is a whole new a brand of television where you working with TV manufacturers not with broadcasted.
I'm leaving.
Money a little bit this week to say branded content and is now brand founded advantage programming afp to this story few weeks ago round at the death of the erosion of budgets can of the disappearing middle of course there's been so much and ringing around of the last last 2 months specifically blast you're you're really I would but what about ultimately well people were saying is that a brands are coming into to find the the programming broadcast to the Lifestyle programming related to that broadcasters are increasingly to train your back sore and that's all the stories about and it's been really looking actually just hearing about the different strategies and places places like Alton ITV and Channel 4.
Can sometimes it's a bit of a dirty word adcash wouldn't be paid for you know the success really I would say probably things returning you know cooking with the stories for example bright for ITV made myself now.
Just actually and then a mess again coming in for address the nation also on ITV that same 8 p.m.
Can apply prime-time slot so it should have you seen shows come back ITV's told me is that you know they actually are making more returning orders later this year will see you even talking about you know but at funded prime time we can do Saturday night shows potential as much so much harder needle threader would say everything to see you, but yeah, it's a completely and yet.
There's that that thing of the broadcasters a little bit.
I spoke with an executive who some people might know from Channel 4 about a decade ago, but Ravi amaratunga who are creative agency in the Netherlands there be snow in Amsterdam and he was saying this was really big 10 years ago right, but now the brands like the big global brands of have moved no they're not looking at the UK Ltd necessarily.
They want something global they want to go to meet the meat consumers where they are and that's not necessarily on ITV or Channel 4 right like it's on YouTube Instagram and so it's a fascinating glimpse into into all of this and we'll have to see whether you know if he really is kind of you to stay it could very well be content with digital is the audio Industry at Paul the radio research bloody rageous released new data on UK Little Miss is there MiDAS study is different to the normal cost.
Which comes out what is one of my discuss? This is a survey about 2000 respondents over the summer and this includes not just radio but all listening so radio cast stream music audio books on time and I'm in the first headline.
Is that your audio is incredibly healthy 96% of the population 15 + listening to something every week 56 million adults in total but I think is how the different types of audio R4 me differently according to age guess so I mean if you take live Radio free sample of the 55 + audience 92% the radio every week good for boom but if it's 15% so it's still good but when you come to the time listening and doesn't require capital and case and Radio 1 and son podcast invariance in completely opposite so my podcast 1524.
1% and listen to a podcast in the last week only 14% 55 plus Is On Demand music even more dramatic 67% of 1524 but only 15% of 55 owned music as someone has got a 30% to £15.24 and then go on to talk about the mood States and this is really interesting because it tells you that in fact these different audio sources are fulfilling different need to live radio really good at keeping you company keeping you in the loop and providing a social soundtrack providing something to talk about in work or in the pub at night whatever podcast just amazing broaden my horizon podcast all the best by Myles and that's that's what it comes across as being there real niche.
That's why they really score under my music is not listing a mood.
It might be about you want music unit for dinner party or something like that and then catch up really was really is to relax will keep me company and then just look at the share of listening.
This is a slightly more dramatic changes with age radio still dominates all radio is about 84% you looking all adults, but if you look at 55, + II's 84% of their time is spent listen to live Radio 3 percent podcasts, but 1524 live radio is no longer the biggest single source of their time 37% live radio 44% catch up and 13 podcast so we know what people have many many more podcast in older people watch him sing is the total radio numbers are quite similar if you had the Live to the catch up.
It's 81 against 87 happening is that the people are listening to Radio but more and more bits to catch up podcast thing as well and podcasting will that carry on as they get older?
Or will adapt a little bit more to the best of a question, isn't it? Yeah? Yeah, I suspect that something that you will get ongoing quest to tackle freelancers mental health brilliant, are they and I think it's some extension of what we've relieved when singing the last time you know if you years.
I think a lot of when you think about the freelance contingent of this industry which is just passed and everything that they've gone through.
What is it 35 or 35% respondents said their mental health support very poor which is an increase on the 24 percent who said the same thing in 2022 and a survey responses of the respondents said they experienced suicidal thoughts in the past 12-months.
I mean how much of this is connected to the state of the economics of television.
Correlation there of course we really seem action for freelancers for example was rolled out at the Edinburgh TV festival and that was that so there's a lot of different stakeholders right.
That's back to you with the broadcaster is Richard watch instead of leading the charge on the broadcast side that was you know now.
We're not that was August we're still waiting to see what that actual plan is you know they were giraffes almost 2 months ago, but ultimately it's like what's happening right and I think a lot of those little bit of impatiens around that and probably I would say forward to seeing times of how it's come together and how much whelans in Tipperary is he seems affect people's mental health right people want to know specially for freelancers in this industry that there is a plan and play yes going forward and of course.
It's difficult because in 2025 things are meant to come back right.
Look at the Studio space in this country now been booked up things are things are meant to come back on track this will be a
Story in 2025 but will people last that long really write that has been here 2 years for some people without City work and it's really taking at all.
It would be great to see action get underway.
Not sure I took so long for to actually be stood up in the first place, but you just hope that broadcast to give the community support from the TV and film charity and if you're in the good side of this and turn right at the moment.
There are good people to maybe donate some way to TV and film charity right.
Just not time for the quiz.
Let's see how much we pay attention to me the news this week this week's question is entitled.
What's the sound in celebration of the news at the BBC has expanded its sound effects library to the public we have three Media stories from the week that you must name to the sounds.
We play so you can buzzing with your names if you know the answer so poorly all say Paul and when are you will say?
Hey, what's that sound sound number 1 Poole this sounds like a pub or Tavern this is a remake of Cheers and this is Simon know who is behind behaving badly and they want to remake it UK audience.
They do talk about it slightly earlier.
This is this is this is another potential.
I don't believe it's done if you need to reboot but if someone can do something great.
I'm open when I first went to Boston I did go to find the bath and that say it's tidy I was really disappointed.
I think I want a picture.
They didn't look like the bar on the field now, but I don't know whether it's like Coronation Street to me.
Yeah all the Queen Vic I don't know what it's going to be that wasn't it? I mean like.
What is it it's the sound of this is Phillip Schofield on this desert island Castaway did you did you catch Phillips work? I've seen a few clip.
I mean he looks rough.
I mean I'm not sure whether it's a good advert him.
I thought he came across ok.
I mean not terrible but I'm not sure where this is going to rehabilitate him.
I mean it was an awkward watch a little bit.
Sorry for me because I do no one and I I found it to be very professional and very good, but you know clearly there's something there's something not quite right there.
Did you catch it will be honest I've not had if you know 3 hours to go through.
I was kind of like my god.
Well.
This is going to be a lot of a lot of Philip and I don't know I do find that there is some value and hearing perspective.
I do find it interesting to hear somebody and he he is sort of natural entertainers.
It's not like it's just very dry personality is it you know he does he is no he didn't but not that not excuse you did and all the rest of it, but I personally you know as a TV viewers interesting to hear from someone from the Channel 5 always loved and tactical defence number three.
say that again Sarah sort of a delivery sound then I can go no sound not stories that suggesting an email that maybe went arrived this week from a news-journal deposit and also just completely escape my brain was on the news for reading and why they were with me last night dancing that she's like actually owning up and saying you know so she seems to be Boris Johnson and she sent her note Boris Johnson imagine me the like I'm thinking about somebody so they're in the two box and then it then it's gone obviously the internet has jumped on this and
Another example of bias from from Laura people to come out of people I'm not privy to the exact discourse and some since since you did make a submission last night, but I suppose maybe there was no way around it.
