Thanks sinnerfox a I might be the most important new computer technology the problem is the day.
I need a lot of speed and processing power complete without costs spiralling Out of Control it's time to upgrade to the next generation of the cloud or Cloud OCI OCI is a single platform for your infrastructure database application development and needs so now you can train your AI model that twice the speed and half the cost of other clouds if you want to do more and spend less take a free test drive OCI and oracle.com / elevate elevate.
Listen to media podcast by Matt Deakin is the tradition of first episode of the year is online annual predictions special weed assemble the finest in the sector to Divine what will happen this year at your hair from publishers including the male and deadline TV indeed and broadcasters, it's all you need to know to tackle the Year Edition podcast Jake was start with you your predictions from last year for which I think you should be held accountable.
It's only fair.
Are you feeling confident? I always approach as part of the pod with the station.
U23 will be a year dominated by AI is growing influence in the media Western media organisations have certainly distance themselves so the BBC Bandit on work devices having said that they have forged ties with tiktok in other areas have done influencer scheme so mixed messages from the BBC and I think am I right in saying that somewhere in Denmark I think they are in Denmark cut ties with tiktok as well.
I might need to double check that discussion lol action on a I absolutely I think that was that was a very safe prediction.
I think the media example that's
Find with this play out in such a huge way during the US strikes has been a huge like an absolutely vital battleground as.day strikes at work now seem writers and actors secure new guardrails and protections in the in the AI space because AI tools are being used increasingly to make films and television in a sec Ella we're looking for to predictions from you.
Maybe one.
That's a bit more of that first safe back.
Yeah, I have a couple here.
I don't know which two to go for but I think I'll go for the Google will delay cookie deprecation again.
Ok.
Yeah so update on what that is whenever you're online and also would you accept cookies which track your behaviour and that advertises can use to target ads and so
What is happening now is Google is got a privacy sandbox trying to because of privacy concerns about if it can track you across not just on that website but across what's happening there in has been lots of legislation and kind of debates going on in Europe which is kind of seen as that leading area have been pushed back and I think actually on the outside.
It's proving a lot more difficult to find an alternative from advertisers and have you got a more ambitious Campbell prediction? I think I think Netflix or bird with a gaming company.
I think that would be really exciting vip's could be quiet mesh quite well.
Could be another sort of cos they're using it as a revenue stream.
It could be another way to boost their revenue of the advertising terrorism.
Which it seems like it's got quite so I've not been going quite as well as they would like the sort of time business aren't they were people spend time and they gaming wouldn't be bad.
That's a good one.
I like it.
I like the confidence Jake have you got a safer prediction for 2024 prediction.
I think forget the gaming company one in the past and we've just been talking about strikes at BBC my prediction is that they are there going to be more strikes at the BBC this year, we are seeing cuts in other areas BBC is close to announcing a sweeping new set of in The Newsroom new set cut that should say there a constant cuts in trouble more strikes anything a bit out there.
Predictions for 2024 either Talk TV will buy GB news or GB news will buy Talk TV one of the Two TV news, is it in this very strange position where it's increasingly confident looks like a genuine Challenger 2 at the BBC in Sky News and yet is mired in all this investigation with Ofcom so it's a bit of a strange place for pretty been used but at the moment you would have to back keeping you because it has really established itself and I think your record us what you think of it and whether you agree with it.
They have to have some credit for that.
I think anyway thanks to you both.
We will hold you to accounts this time next year look forward to it.
Hello Mr Adam McQueen I write these streets of pages for private eye and my two predictions for 2024 would be the first one is dependant on sale of the Telegraph to the UAE fund not going through but in that case I'm going to stick with very good to have that we got back part way through the year that Rupert Murdoch Will has done a deal with the wrong is a motorbike at least one of their newspapers potentially the eye of their hands in return for the male getting Telegraph titles and my darling spectator and that does cunningly a bit, please try to do a evading all of the kind of regulatory processes necessary when it comes to monopolies and mergers and that kind of thing as a wildcard on this one.
This is something I'm banging on about writing to sort the pandemic making this prediction and eventually it's going to become become great, but I would say one newspaper one national newspaper going online only I think we are real.
Tipping point now, where people are going to realise that actually putting things into print and distribute in and around the country in the early hours of the morning is no longer a feasible business proposition, so that's my prediction.
How many years after we are we now after the Independent went down the summary of 2016 was never another one going that way at least Happy New Year welcome back welcome to the show you were in this seats this time last year.
Yeah and number one traitors will kick off a whole new wave of premium entertainment and factual.
Right, that's right.
Isn't it? That's pretty good right.
That's there's a lot of stuff out there this year what genuinely have been a number of years now show my age.
I've always been really curious statement and you know the X Factor is now is it going and there's always been a bit of a worry about the declining numbers of strictly has been on God knows how long I knew it was a time.
It was like Strictly It Takes pretty expensive and that was it when it's a bit then.
That's what I was in the masked singer came along and a bit like oh, maybe there's like something that comes along and it blows out the water and we are generally do you think that we are now seeing a new moment in entertainment an outlier that would like survive a bit clearly hasn't works and Rise and Fall of the app works bright nearly there, but there are two shows that.
You are quite classic entertainment shows in fell and I didn't work because I felt quite date it.
Where is if you look at things that have work.
I eat quickly and challenge you wipe a traitors new IP line is the best thing they got the next coming and I do things I'm more interested in seeing how well Destination X going to do compared to say gladiators and so there is there is definitely feels like the new sense of gameplay include a piano in this as well.
I think was the big play the big swing for Channel 4 to get the entertainment here.
Don't they got it with the piano and I think that is it says he's going to whole thing around like real people doing things that isn't like lots of sexy people in bikinis.
Kind of a bit of something human human and it's not just about Talent it's not just about singing competition.
It's actually a bit of luck.
That's in there as well and
I think traitors and you cannot predict.
How is going to win the second prediction you had was if the BBC nails it's Coronation covering then.
I think they'll be safe at least this government.
What do you tell me if I think they've there in as much trouble is always been and they were there was no Halo from the excellent job.
They did have a visual the death celebrity practise and yeah and strictly and etc.
Yeah, it's a bit bonkers.
I think this whole life is completely bonkers.
I cannot believe they will not give you going to give you like see you later and Anna said it's clearly a clipping of the rings before new government comes in down.
Delete home and fears resort and I think it sucks and your vibration was big change to senior management at Channel 4 following a successful fending off a privatisation.
So you don't got that bit right yeah.
Yeah the changes haven't come are they going to come I mean? I think I think that something's gonna happen.
You like this is obviously a and and whether or not.
They are kind of personnel changes.
You know there's a lot to talk about moving Channel 4 from being a TV channel to do it more digital stuff and that kind of happy Debbie chat about what it seems to be working in the money is going in that direction.
You know what channel 4 put those as interesting cos it's doing good numbers whether or not it is recouping investment the advertising clips with is yet to be seen they have been called and stop making the right things whether or not they going to start doing that is easier to be there got more options to a different channel to what it was before I feel strongly about this and it listens somebody please tell me what channel 4 remit is for and I think that channel 4 have a responsibility to.
Vocal and clear about what everybody is both today and in the future, they got Channel 4 documentaries xenomorph action staff and and and they kind of doing lots of plays in the YouTube world as as well as can be pushing what was called for ID was called all phone is now called The Old 4ip folder from the shelf on the floor IP thing that is more for every rap4 at that was was more about making Investments into other businesses that I think he is closer to the great the great fun.
They have now so it's a channel and stable of of Investments I made in Indies which means that they have their own kind of like minority stake investment into lots of companies and some of which are very very good and very successful years.
It'll be in those question marks that how that's going to be related to them making their own content you know exactly is that growth fund emergency Studios type thing you thought that would be some new people coming into maybe take control of some of these new ideas.
Yes, we will see that I am curious about is there is bundling.
So I think they got a bit of a prescription for teeth now and that is being born through the fact that you know revenue for down and redundancies being made a big night round redundancies, and it was seeing it across lots of different businesses.
I think it's now got a little bit too unwieldy where consumers expecting to have subscriptions a lot of difference and and and it's you know if people have tighten their belts etc.
The way round that I think is bundling and I think that we're going to see and this is also married to the
Spending less on tech as in hard work, so I think apple and push quite heavily into the Apple 14.
Everywhere is Apple fitness, It's Apple TV Plus it's apple music to iCloud and and it's service plate which I believe that be very successful for them and I think so they've made some investments in Sport with MS in America I'm not sure how well how successful that's been but I think there's rumours swirling around about there being a merger of the company.
You know what I meant cool.
TV ask of bundling together that becomes increasingly active if that happens of a content bundle.
I'm I think they're not out of the realm of possibility that the Netflix goodbye Spotify and a nap becomes arrival in the other direction of a new content bundle in that way and and obviously Disney are look.
At what they have is their model they are looking to offload ESPN and ABC and and kulu comes into that package and I think they want to do that big steps give me a physical bundle.
What is going to be your family are predicted by a list of physical let's go to his girlfriend.
I think that I'm going to stop the Netflix going to send someone cutting their costs when they just made a profit a lot of people have been saying that fattening up on the telly side which streamer goes or he gets combined with what is MTV in County central in the Colossus is probably going to be the one that gets gobbled up by a big player.
Think there are two men on for free and if I'm going to say one that's going to go.
I think lionsgate probably entered into this for a bit too late and if I was to say one of them was gonna go to quickly Direction it is probably going to be that I'd love to subscribe to landscape glass for a while but Twitter / XS / whatever is there's obviously something that's going to happen connection whether or not it can survive beyond that is open for debate adjusting advertises hate it.
I think people who don't want to use it anymore any sick people don't like opening me up anymore and I think that's a and people aren't putting up content with that face anymore.
I do think it's really curious that journalists tell you they got there is a lot jealousy using blue sky which kind of an echo chamber for themselves, but when it comes to kind of following journalist following story if your news.
Fiend-like threads isn't giving you what you need right now.
I'm all in on threads to sort themselves out when it comes to hashtagging for Christmas things to do some topics.
Yes, so what is comes down to is whether or not they can do this events elections right where the people are going to use threads to follow the election.
They don't really want to get in that game sports events to be at the Super Bowl or the euros right.
So if a man is too kind of get a way to build a conversation around 1 a big sporting event then friends will start taking off.
I think a lot of people have signed up to it.
I don't know probably don't I don't like and you was a poster on on Tritton she's not fun.
It's not I think you'll get there but that's my prediction.
What's your social media during the whole thing.
Which is going to go to the wall in either it will be either it's going to be uploaded by by your mask and he's going to go with this is just silly I can't do this anymore or it's kind of I actually do think it's going to stop crumbling and and disappearing and it's certainly not going to be something that we that we talked about as much if you have done in the past.
So yes good.
That's a great line.
We will check with her that still the case this time next year predictions after this from the European the UK's fastest-growing newspaper.
What do we predict for the year ahead in medium at work soon be a very interesting.
Yeah.
I think the the big story will be the future The Telegraph today being so to essentially a headphone that sound by golf people and I know the massively unpopular idea at the telegraphs not to mention The Spectator
Chase the weather so I think that the government is taking her and more than active interesting that and I think that it might well.
It might will not go through so that's as straightforward as that a lot of them complained about the BBC's influence and local news and how that's having a detrimental effect on their business.
We know that reach the formerly known as trinity mirror laying off for 50 people to their businesses in trouble local news is incredibly important to all of us and dying on its back side so that so that really need some some attention from government possible.
Thanks for the dcms and Wild
CNN does very well when big events come and what big event than a presidential contest for the whole of America and I just have a hunch and I could be but I just have a hunch that under marks leadership CNN might enjoy a long and Resurgence is an investor in the European so he is so he knows he doesn't brilliant.
I wonder whether it will be any kind of aggregation between the two kinda Challenger brands in TV between GB news and talk TV that would be interesting space to watch yes, I mean the sort of BSkyB model might well, and we certainly predict you will have a stimulating and constructive time when you join us for the two maths podcast with Matt Kelly myself and Matt d'ancona every Friday throughout 2024 will see you.
Follow the show when you click the link in the show notes happy Friday I might be the most important new computer technology ever the problem is the day I need complete without cost spiralling Out of Control it's time to upgrade to the next generation of the cloud oracle cloud infrastructure OCI is a single platform for your infrastructure database application development and meet so now you can train your AI models at twice the speed and less than half the cost of other clouds if you take a free test drive MCI and if you care about the state of it on a better course we have a solution that may be somewhat surprising work in finance.
But we don't just teach we create codes of conduct an impact key policy issues with Global governments and regulators to join a global network of investment professionals visit institute.org / set the standard today financial decisions are driven by hopes and dreams as much as my fax and analysis at lgt Wealth Management expertise and financial security having powered clients to realise their Dreams for over a century dedicated to go and beyond managing money.
We aim to bring to life your financial goals and Vision for the future visit lgw MLP and lgt Wealth Management Limited about authorised and regulated by the financial conduct authority.
Jamie's to look at their hopes and dreams for the year ahead in our Media predictions may have you got for me my media predictions is going to be the continued and I think rise of audiobooks.
No channels getting paid has all been agreed in advance.
So hopefully there shouldn't be any kind of who has the thing iPhone really interesting is that Robin example? He's one of my clients his book the trial is great it went to number.
It's number two on week one the following week it went to number one which is actually pretty unusual.
It's sold out sold all the physical copy and people are going to audiobooks more and more and more and more and more and I also think the rise of AI
Super interesting because no longer will an author have to go and sit in a studio and don't tell Jamie's and do it for for for for days voice by Britney been it could be if it was interesting.
I am I'm not an audiobook Spotify play nothing is a dreadful you.
I just texted you got 15 hours a month to listen to it now.
I try to listen to The Elon Musk brilliant.
Really good really interesting interesting got 65% See you in 29 days and I know you will not I will I will not be picking up that book again in app purchase or out of the scriptures that just is it just looks fine.
And we will have to go back to the drawing board that ultimately the thing that made podcast such an incredible medium and platform is the intimacy and the stories that we got from that and I think that has got slightly lost in the in the in the in the Quagmire over the past 18 months.
I think that will that will disappear because the money is gone.
It's harder to get you to work a bit harder for it and I think a lot of the quick landgraabs will disappear podcast as they grown and grown and grown people go on podcast as part of their PR so you actually hear the same people on the same podcast going over and over again.
I actually think that there is still a space for all.
All types because I think just like those for TV just like the word for Radio 4 magazines people want the celebrity then what the true Crime they want the news and current affairs, but I think things need to be smarter.
I think this is why the James Corden was going to be some really super interesting because I think he is going to take it to another level and for any celebrity that says I'm just going to do a sit down and chat with my mates is going to end up looking well only that you know I think the doctor's last year of the Beckhams Rooney's Robbie I mean I love them.
I don't want to be coming documentaries.
I think we should be calling you call him stories on my stories.
Essentially subjects and production companies they control the narrative they pick you know is the narrator and you think of you think so that the filmmaker.
They are basically just at home shih tzu back in the day on.
Mortimore and for the next 3 years will have more and more and more until they have got the point that will be a z list of wandering around with her best mate asking questions what the shopping Morrisons let you know people remember the celebrity traitors is on the way that is going to be the one that's going to be like Fantastic Four from event TV 2024 celebrity Tracy's give me one that I can't wait for you would be a good celebrity trying to contestants.
Who's that sorry Martin Lewis so everybody know you every second because you're busy but he not I don't know I don't know and I thought I'm not trusting the expert.
Be like host and traitor maybe that be the ultimate selfie of the book is underway at the moment to try and get their clients onto can I ask a question so celebrity traitors you're right.
I think people will desperately want to do it.
What do you think the calibre of Celebrity Big Brother is going to be in my heart? I think I could reset.
I think they Jane would have done really well, so I think he wanted to reach and now it's up to them to come up like they can stop pushing the boundaries and treaters celebrity version you think good calibre be enough for some good good people.
I don't know I'm not sure I'm not sure.
Russia book is a brave enough to dive into what people one from a Celebrity Big Brother needs to be you Michael Madison's your you know and less it influences.
Do not make particularly great TV long time so less of that more old school and more people Celebrity Big Brother for didn't know what they were and how short is a week.
They were going you know 30th scribbling on the table after being be willing to more time and get down there done a great job of getting pure and back to back to the rooms.
What made civilian Big Brother great.
I need to do the same.
And and 70s need to be not afraid just to confirm that the mask slipping celebs for both the traitors and Celebrity Big Brother this hi everybody this is the right with his predictions for the media industry next year sadly.
It's a line from Dad's Army I'm going to repeat my private phrases to say we're all doomed Captain Mainwaring because that's all I can see unless the channels and the commissioners start bloody committing again and stop ignoring the plight of the freelancers who can't get work when there's no commissions.
We're all doomed so death destruction and doom good luck.
See you next year if we survive please next to buy Media predictions for the year why it's right Ascot Brian and press Gazette Charlotte o b.
Did you have a good Christmas
Good time of year for TV I'm definitely not strapped 3 predictions for yeah, let's see how you first you said I don't think lots of national newspapers a major magazines will suddenly close in print this year, but I do expect some Max to close in print that nothing massive have closed or are closing the next couple of months but kind of smaller ones so I will pick a challenge you slightly National Geographic medium-sized small find other than that.
I said ok.
I will give you some print magazines also launched like future.
Launch like in a limited run bit so I just said yes kind of around about this year 3 resources at a time when costs are biting newsquest example in reach 90s.
They give us an example recently about AI writing up like pressure Lisa's cancel minutes and then report is actually going out of the office to write stuff rather than replacement of the journalist.
I mean there's been a lot of caution.
I say I think there was some big stories earlier in the year that we talking about on here about us online news publishers trying out it writing that didn't go as well, but yes, I totally against sound that good.
Has got stuck into experimenting on tiktok from basically standing start but now I think since 2023.
They will get a bit braver with the format.
Did you get braids with tiktok? Yes, I spoke to you like the MailOnline head of social video not long ago and he talked about Halloween doing more of the tiktok.
You know like meeting for my friends Vox popping on the street at Stephen Street things like that and I think lots of the publishers have been doing that rather than just kind of her old style broadcast and so I think that's been working turn on lights off this weekend hosted things with people you wouldn't expect so much younger Focus just come up to the right thing to do.
That's pretty good.
We can have some more predictions from you in scots.
Nothing to charge you with the moment.
So please would be good will get you will get you next year please number 11.
Have you got some my prediction is that there will be some?
What's happening at the top of TV really look at the bosses of TV for the last 2 years it's been pretty much static you and Charlotte Moore BBC you've had in cats gel for Cats Channel 4 side Benetton sky appears on ITV I think that naturally I've got no inside and blood this is just a sense that because it has been remaining the same for quite a while because the market has been going through the motions and just because of its exhausting job and I think there will be some creative renewal at some of these places.
How many who is Top Gear on telly people will decide or you know yeah good is predictions which is the following on from what's been happening last few months.
I think there's going to be more job cuts and probably more closures that kind of big scale.
Sites like you know like Jezebel recently.
I think ok give us a number.
How many how many big big biggest sites like this like this isn't justyou.co.uk focused a big streaming service will I fold or with merge with another? I mean we are in a period of consolidation with streamers anyway spot will be interesting to see whether one goes soft and we just decided to give in essentially interesting that work with Netflix have been starting to show more fertility stuff again, and I saw a field.
That's a bit of not just Netflix also can stepping back realising that their original content cannot sustain it but also I think they're arrivals going actually if you build it.
They probably might not come well.
Pull that the Paramount plus prediction and you will somehow kind of come together to launch some sort of thing thing or fight back against either the AI companies or Google because there is quite a lot of frustration at the moment and science and media writer Tara Conlan first thing's first we should look at your 2023 promoting number one the big streamers will see 2023 is the year were they start to consolidate they'll be few outlets out there.
We're nearly there aren't we getting there are we getting a HBO Max yeah? I think that's the thing that I told them all up actually the other day the top 7 streamers it now if you want everything that you can get in the UK NOW TV yellow apple probably got £130 a month that as well, so that's a top Dollar even if you don't it's around 117 something like that is about 1/2 grand a year.
That is a lot of money on top of if you're buying Sky TV don't you don't sky bet you know if you've got Sky glass or ever so I think we're eating that can't see my saying it's time.
You know even even me if you know a bit about about the industry.
I just had a britbox subscription.
We just can't keep up and I think they will come it is biting there is there is you know there are people leaving the Big streamers.
They're moving to other set up the room companies are the moving to two networks so it does seem to be happening at there is a shift that you know they're not spending as much it will come I'm sure but maybe I was just a bit earlier and then second one the imagination of BBC World News and the home news channel will result in home use not getting much of a say and I'll be political hot potato again.
I think it I mean it has haven't been into has not been a smooth integration and there is still fall out from it, and I think going to come and I think the Crunch point come with the next general election because it will become apparent then to a lot of people who normally tune into the news channel and I have to notice from my point.
TuneIn as much to it.
I can just look at Sky News are delighted at what's happening and when you've got it's not the BBC's full but when you've got to be conflict happening in the world you got big international stories, but when it comes to you know a big big story as a general election will be they will have upstream.
Have a way of managing that but it's about staffing levels are quite tired already multiple versions of Pop on the website or differently now, but that's resources and you've got a car on the road absolutely and that requires as you say people in requires money.
It's been an expensive year for BBC News because what's been going on Gia politically and how that will be out on screen will be really interesting I think for them.
They can cover it online obviously and that's what you know what they will say and do.
Can but those politicians who will be all over the BBC what we see about impartiality when you have you don't have that a shop window is he used to have a lot of politicians the lottery.
So what are you a new fresh ones will actually I mean I should think of something a bit more kind of like fun really but unfortunately doom and gloom with one of them.
Is that they I think it will be a tough time for independent production companies.
It was starting to get off last year in 2023.
I think the roller effect of the cutbacks in budgets in advertising will impact even more of the smaller independent production companies in the big ones you want you know all.
Etc, what's happening with them? And it will it will trickle down and I do feel for those smaller companies who pays covius those that's a backup savings that they had into during covid the having really tough times.
What's happening for the BBC with budget cuts they're not be as much been made some people call it a mask correction which sounds quite hard because it's people's lives and produces that I'm speaking to are having some of my having a really tough time even more than just the money from the streamers and sort of disappeared it seems a cuts in that particular thing will be seen from Public broadcasters and they're trying to help where they can but at the end of the day comes down to money and it comes down to airtime and with fewer if we go to move over to a time where linear TV is replacement by app-based TV
Have that daytime space maybe people are instead binging shows from from the stream as well than watching this morning BBC2 just like like through exactly and I think if that's the end game then you can see why they cutting back on daytime shows see you know it's it doesn't make as much they sticking to the prime but there are still people who want to watch daytime TV and those audiences still need to be served by public service broadcasters and so there will still be a marker for a while, but those smaller companies who those particularly you know did that the factual the sort of flight bread and butter factual yeah exactly so I think it would be even top of those production companies the big ones will will be ok, because they have to the back office they have the reserve say you know have all the economy.
Dale but the smaller ones I do feel for them as I have and again.
It's feeds back into what I was talking about subscriptions and I just wondered if in 24 this year, we're going to get sick of subscriptions reason why I say that I was talking last year with substack about the them getting more into video and also talking to sesame and that the people behind who founded a cost and they were saying subscriptions out there are people getting them and how will consumers basically cut back and what it will mean for content and what's DM think they good in publishing broadcasting you pay for an article.
Will you pay for a podcast they're saying why can't you do that within an episode of a show is kind of going back to the old way the Apple used to buy an episode.
Yes, and bear argument is an average payment is about €2 and 5% of people who go and buy an article go on to subscribe to this thing it wouldn't cannibalising subscription revenues too much and it would bring people in who were tired of subscriptions gym membership subscriptions a lot of people get tired thinking while I'm so with a declining subscriptions.
Will we see more of a pain for episode and also the substrate because of their that move into video if producers rather than going to the traditional kind of platforms and Meghan getting ahead of myself a bit here but rather than going out on a Netflix or going out on Amazon because you could put it out on substitute your video and they said they want to do films etc and potentially long form content like that.
Is that a way forward for a production?
Second third right that they might put out on their direct-to-consumer.
I guess what I'm saying is front some different financial models with some kind of the way from the streaming subscription model is that a way of increasing revenue or not? I don't know phone and Minds than mine.
I'll probably looking at it was as if it doesn't have any 24 maybe it happens when you very much no worries and a Happy New Year to you will be back with a new episode next week and of course every week here on the media podcast sure you hit that follow button to get us in your ears every week studios where you can get 25% off your first booking and it's lovely place when you use the code of hot that's a London podcast studio using the code mediapad for 25%
