It is surely wrong for the BBC who are still regarded as the principal UK broadcaster to shut down all national and regional AM transmitters whilst there are still AM only receivers operating within the UK.

Nicholas Anderson: The number of people using AM only radios is probably tiny. The number who don't have access to FM, DAB, Freeview, satellite or internet radio will be even smaller. Spending millions of pounds broadcasting on AM to reach such a small number of people is a huge waste of money.

What is wrong is not increasing the number of FM and DAB transmitters to cover the areas where there is now no coverage.

Bauer Media has already calculated around 85% per cent of its audience have gone digital which is a far higher percentage proportion of the national average! So, Bauer has decided to pull the plug on its AM services in Scotland, Northern Ireland and North of England.
DXers excepted, how many people will notice the AM service has gone after December 13th?

If AM service is to be discontinued by most providers how does one explain that Radio Caroline has an AM service they claim is still widely listened to in the South East of England and the near continent?

Nicholas Anderson: Radio Caroline is a community station largely broadcasting to its own group of fans. It isn't a commercial station and therefore doesn't have the same financial considerations (i.e. it doesn't need to make a profit as long as enough people are willing to fund it).
