18/08/2023 Radio 4 Feedback…

BBC sounds music Radio podcasts is the BBC obsessed with a look and politics I think that there's probably too much emphasis on what happens in the US where is intern Europe cast Northern Africa cast northern Asia Justin Webb who presents America's as well as the Today programme joins me to discuss indictments primaries and of course your comments also said all the thank you as I think I hope we got everybody in there, but I'm just to everybody out there listening to us.

We have salute.

Love you.

Just been amazing ok and so 6 Music listeners.

Give their reaction to recent changes to the evening schedule is absolutely heartbroken when the beat made the decision to move Mark Riley's programme till later slot you.

Don't need to always chase younger list.

Sing something stuck with us old RocknRolla Badu 6 Music listeners deserve a label 6 Music dad's well.

We could have dad and his son in our box box Allison 26 and I'm not a dad.

I like the music policy.

Nothing that big is ever going to be totally perfect Morton Stephen and Elliot later, but first the BBC launch the Radio 4 and signs americast podcast in 2020 to follow the US presidential election commission is to drive a younger audience towards its news and current affairs I put a reboot in 2022 after the original presenters left the BBC this weekend emergency edition focused on former President Donald Trump's fourth indictment of the Year not shorts of our own issues and controversies here in the UK Summers question why so much interest in what's happening on the other side of the pond hello my name is Robin Le Mesurier

Living wage in Cumbria probably too much emphasis on what happens in the USA that BBC is more inclined to look Westwood's so example there isn't in Europe cast Northern Africa cast northern Asia cast and recently how much real coverage was given to the events in Spain where the management of its economy.

I think was in adequately covered Anna target the BBC Focuses too much on the us at the expense of other countries Andrew Hooper I feel very well informed both by the BBC us correspondent America stand carefully selected interview part of a scale is setting out the background and context for British another non-us listen.

This is an M it's not critical enough of course the BBC Match

Impartial but that shouldn't mean treating extreme trumpian conspiracy theorists with a deference.

They don't deserve also there's too much of it and not enough about Europe replies to cultural programs as well as to news well with me now is America's presenter Justin Webb and Jonathan aspinwall who is senior news editor for BBC News podcasts Justin you've been doing the American cast for almost exactly a year now.

What do you see as it's a no I mean at the whole thing about podcast is just a whole where broadcasting consuming not just news but I kind of sense of the culture of a place and the ups and downs and and a white picture and I think so often in use and I think we're rightly accused of this in the use of endless kind of dirge of nightmares and added nightmares an awful thing.

This is happening.

I'm not much context around it because they're often isn't time on the news and the great thing about podcast and the great thing about America's did you just able you got the space you got time to give a full of picture of something and perhaps to insert as well that kind of a bit of humour that you wouldn't get into news and an Indian session of the human get a full up about the place that you talking about so for me.

It's a way of putting a rounded picture of a place and the importance of that place in our lives and in the lives Jonathan how much do you know about who the audience is podcasts and on BBC signs? I imagine that you you know you've got algorithms that can tell you how many people are live on who they are we always know that BBC is trying to push towards a younger audience is that actually happening for America

It's got interesting because I wonder if there are challenges in making a program for a UK audience primarily but one that you also want Americans to listen to what's going on.

Justin Nantucket and Robin Lomu both commented the BBC just spend too much time looking Westwood towards America and I think Robin pointed out that can be at the expense of covering other continents dimensions Africa countries closer to home as example is Spain he's got a good point as me things about that absolutely and if there's a demand for us about those are there areas why not? It's not a zero-sum game.

That's the whole thing about podcast isn't it? We're not preventing coverage or reducing coverage in any other area were just increasing coverage in this one also say it's like I've Defence of America cost and American affairs being of pre-eminent importance in a you.

Don't have to be a genius about.

To know they're about to have next year pretty important presidential election and not just them.

I think it's fair to say for us as well and for the whole world one that is important and newsworthy and were thinking about it classic Corsair ability to impose themselves on the rest of us.

I mean I'm absolutely understand the point about other places and I'm all in favour of other place is getting the cover is worth saying there are reasons why America really matters and we should apologise for covering it more just wanted to pick up on our listeners comments but all they want you to be you shouldn't show I think they put it as extreme difference to trump conspiracy theories tonight.

I'm not sure that you would agree.

That's what you do, but it does bring up and an interesting point journalists were so maybe journalist accused themselves after the election when trump got in originally they haven't really treated him and his policies seriously enough while obviously giving him a tenner.

I wonder if you as a team of spent some time thinking about how you cover trump this time round.

Yeah, it's a really interesting question and of course.

It's a question that the American media grappling with as well.

If you seriously think that Donald Trump is a threat to the Future of the constitution to the Future of democracy and by extension to the Future of the world if you seriously think those things should you be impossible for me? I think you have to be because I think that's the only way properly to cover him and that means calling out those things that are obviously wrong search not going down the conspiracy theory and not giving the opportunity for people to come on and Express things that aren't true without challenging them and you know impartiality of course it does not mean on the one hand on the other hand it means trying to find out what the actual truth is of anything and I take that point that you have got to take Siri

Wellsprings of trumpism if I can put it like that and I think you know as a podcast we've got to try to do that.

So you are recognised the criticism and annoyed I take it on board but I think the challenge is to find a way of doing it doing it credibly and doing it coach and Leanne and doing it family Jonathan I know that you're not primarily broadcasting too many people who will actually be voting in the US election of course but I wonder if Donald Trump takes up all the headlines in the next 18 months even if many people see them as negative and diamonds court cases on such.

Do you have a teacher balance the podcast in terms of time because all the time but then also what happens if he's the most newsworthy, so I just wondered what your thoughts on body balance that going forward.

and then we just

Last question with so many of us journalists now involved in more informal podcasts.

I wonder if you think it's beginning to spill over into more mainstream Radio 4 Today programme.

I don't mean for second that you going any easier on politicians.

I mean just that the tone is it slightly more informal and maybe the relationship between the presenters mean it has the style changed since you've been there haven't even the conversation wearing now.

I just think everything has become less formal and breasts in that as you haven't actually there is a risk of maintenance.

I don't think actually people turn on the Today programme for meeting us and I think we've got to be careful actually that we don't allow the podcast world to slip into live broadcasting.

You don't want endless maintenance and softness and easygoing interviews which a lot of podcast interviews are because they're Explorer

Rather than competent but on the Today programme you need a few interviews not all of them but a few interviews actually I'm quite comfortable and I think it's really important actually to keep your podcast world and your broadcast world separate Jonathan aspinwall and Justin Webb thank you both and of course America's is available on BBC sounds no last week.

We looked at the Demise of longwave when the shipping forecast that daily service test match special will no longer be available on the long wave signal that provoked a big response from our longwave listeners here's a flavour feedback about longwave, please, please and you say it's 4 long wave stay it's the only really easy way possible radio turn it on it works.

If you want to listen to The Test match in the bath or in the garden or anywhere else the shipping forecast whatever other programmes are on the daily service.

Please keep long wave by the Met Office at 2:35 on Wednesday 11th of March booking feedback, but keeping Radio 4 long wave it really is very very important to me or so because of the daily.

I think we should keep Radio 4 longwave.

My name is Dee I'm phoning from Boston in Lincolnshire no, I'm listening to the BBC in glorious FM stereo and it gives me beautiful results on Radio 3 and 4 now the people who listen on long wave.

I wouldn't blame them if they would do they see if you take this service away with title most certainly do if my transmission was chopped Hazelwood blocks at the end of the over to come running in again.

Hello Robert Sadler I'm calling you from Walsall it is fully closed down BBC Radio 4 on long wave and western and Burghead must be kept open.

Having a blast the Aussies getting walked but I must interrupt because it's time for shipping forecast well, if you'd like to share your thoughts on anything you've heard on BBC audio.

You can leave a voice message at 03:45 for standard charges from landlines and mobiles will apply you can send a WhatsApp voice note to the same number or you can tweet us at BBC R4 feedback no BBC Radio 6 music in 2010 only 8 years after it was launched the axe hungover 6 Music The Music station that positions itself as beyond the mainstream.

What a vocal campaign from listeners and musicians save the station from being cut and it's still going strong reason figures.

2.7 million listeners a week and it's the biggest digital any network in the UK 6 Music Store what's Marc Riley and Gideon Coe have had their own shows can't just one night a week and move to a later slot with the power hosting together on Tuesdays and Wednesdays Tom Ravenscroft and Deb Grant took over the earliest from 7 to 9 p.m.

With new music fix daily and since the changes with a nice you've been filling or inbox with your comment my name is married Emma I'm a glasgow-based music lover and as I'm coming up to my 15th birthday.

I think it's not too much to ask that my musical tastes are catered for and the place that I get my musical kicks is BBC 6 music on the evening schedule which is when able to listen as a rock in person, so I was absolutely heartbroken when they made the decision to move Mark Riley's programme till.

And all my heart FM on solo for a couple of nights a week Mike Riley has been a companion almost a friend to me from many many years you don't need to always chasing you can something stick with us old rock and rollers.

Hello, my name's Andy learning and from Clevedon near Bristol to time for the customer closer changes have left the station completely at variance with what we were company for musically and hello Benedict from Grantham just having a whinge about the schedule and changes at 6 Music especially Marc Riley disappearing to latest slot.

Comparing it with the awesome Gideon Coe yyyy and thanks for all those who works on the programme over the years Lisa Kendrick and Justin Spear did great work in the early days.

Hi Ann Moura from Los Angeles California I listen to 6 music online for BBC sounds the recent evening schedule changes have removed the stations to best shows the quality of the Chosen and played on the other new programs is noticeably not as good as before and does not live up to the highest standards set by 6 Music over the years music fans welcome to the listening to BBC 6 music Tom Ravenscroft dad Grant in the house new music fix daily coming back just starting off problem patterns letter of Sussex and I've been sick listener since it's inception station schedules have been an ageist mistake.

I've not had the Range alternative music on offer and alienated its long-standing audience.

It's founding the stages original audience find itself unserved an unwanted there that 6 management of decided with two old but I feel that 6 Music is chasing unicorns the younger.

Lol yes, he doesn't listen to radio.

Hi, my name is Lori I live in Manchester and I'm an average 6 music listener.

I've been asleep for at least 1015 years now to the 6 Music schedule, may don't work and they're porefection of six music values Mike Riley is always been champion of the new is exhausted.

Gig goer with Gideon Coe you had these beautiful esoteric shows the changes seem like changes for the sake of the smell of ageism and they're really articulate the six music values of Discovery they just seem like something but some middle management that they need to do to justify the job, but have

Old schedules back and just take care everybody and see you on the other side the 5th of June that will be really and Co in studio SL3 I believe all right you take care too tall so many bonus less than happy to hear less of their favourite DJs 6 Music controller Samantha moy wasn't available to respond to your comments this week.

He has told us but she will come on feedback in the autumn.

So please do keep sending us your comments and I will put them to her when I can in the meantime.

We receive this statement walsall.to schedules evolved over time weeknights on 6 Music continue to offer listeners a broad mix of music classic tracks live sessions and guest mixes each and everyone Mark Riley and Gideon Coe remain an essential part of 6 Music evening schedule presenters have the freedom to play the music and support the Artists they want to in their joint and solo shows

This is also the case with Tom Ravenscroft and Grant in their new music fix Daily Show which is dedicated to New Music Discovery has the biggest digital Amy station in the UK that 2.7 million TuneIn each week to share our love of music of all kinds of six music is also come under criticism recently in the Press for its music policy in the Guardian said it was suffering from an identity crisis appealing mainly to middle-aged indeed loving 6 Music dad's and to investigate we put Stephen Jones and his son Elliott fox box this week to get their take on the stations particular appeal when is Stephen Jones I am 43? I am I live in Glasgow and I am a photographer.

I'm Elliot Jones and he's my Dad I am 10 years old I listen to 6.

And I'm not a dad so that can't be true master of puppets and bass on BBC Radio 6 music 6 Music is because they've got decent music on it and after that.

I'm just stop listening to awful tunes.

Cos everyone else he likes wacky music.

So what kind of music do the classmates listen to it school play Ed Sheeran death? What kind of things do you like to listen to on a on 6 Music for example the Beastie Boys ecdc Metallica Iron Maiden

Avoided get upset when someone what did someone do with about the other day the tune that are really like to print on fix the ballad of Dorothy Parker what it seemed I like the music policy.

I think the love and she has got really all of them.

I've got a really good mix of playing good music and good story is not much waffle with the Marianne have shown below in the van.

Show that both very different music lost to look forward to today moth my compilation of the week one of our all-time fav crate diggers and just like that kind of like who's presenting as like a right to the middle age man and then some middle-aged women and they've been bringing some young women as all recently but it gets me they've not got any sign of young men as well.

It's good.

Did really like when they first did the you know there should have looked back to the set of 80s and 90s and someone but in the same thing.

It's me and I had no idea which would be a real looking at themes, and you could like for example look at countries and use of looking at music.

They would fit within 6 Music and artists but sort of exploring the musical the culture of like a specific country over a holiday that could be quite if it was a Japanese theme music they are something you could play Japanese rock band called showing knife legend.

Talking about you know when you on tonight Spotify and it says if you like, they are you might like this and that could be a nice way of we thought like likes Prince and if you like Prince then you might also like this person who came before friends who is in spy Ryan like this man who came after him who inspired by him nothing that big is ever going to be totally perfect and there have been a few missteps like so I think that I'm moving people around I do really like death grant.

She's really good but then I think it actually think you would have been going to put her on the show on her own.

I guess it is cold war Steve aka, Christopher Spencer did the BBC do they still make a decision and you can I think maybe you should have had a cup of tea and thought about that one.

I don't listen to anything else apart from 6 music listen to Sometimes BBC podcast you're dead to me and Mark steels in town to my friends at school.

They still listen to six music because they might discover that the music on it is a lot better than your music that they are actually listen to well.
