Grab life by the handlebars search Santander Cycles to find out more or download the app terms and conditions apply home welcome to the media podcast Ironman ticket on the show today Ofcom tells the BBC to fix complaint process and do more to address impartiality concerns the new streamer in town that is paramount plus too late to the party plus KISS FM content director Rebecca Frank reveals why the stations launch a radio subscription service and explore my readers being riled up this week.
That's all coming up in this edition of the media podcast Mirror editor Richard Wallace is the channels boss owner Rupert Murdoch's to be taking an active interest as the new station struggles to attract an audience Russia's blocked the Telegraph website over it.
Train reporting this follows 29 members of the British Media being banned last week including editors at the Guardian times Daily Mail and the BBC UK party companies in Tiverton and solitons by elections were criticised for dressing election material in journalistic clothes and time out magazine distributed it lasts print copies on Thursday the magazine.
We can you publish online including through new daily email today show I've got two experts here to unpack the media events and making the headlines first up is Fleet Street fox Susie Boniface see you've had a busy couple of weeks nominated for a Paul Foot award congratulations and a journal article being published as well for your work on Britain's nuclear test veterans story.
Why did you get into this one? What's been happening in the Mirror has reported on nuclear test veterans about 40 years so I'm going to do it and in about 2002.
Just join the Sunday Mirror then and they've done a big thing for the 50th anniversary of the first bomb test which was in 52 and I think I'm going to study on it or something something and then the main reporter who was Anchor in these things he left the paper and when you know the phone rang and it was a test veteran some Boniface you did that you do it that you say you so speak to someone that goes well.
I saw a nuclear bomb go off in this happen to me and this happened to me and my children really my wife had miscarriages and we need Justice and thanks very much you find a contact to you what you go find someone else.
They say the same thing and then someone else is the same thing as someone said the same thing and the mod says no didn't happen and so that was the fundamental thing.
It's quickly that I got really annoyed at the way these men were being treated by the government by successive governments of all types.
It's been 20 years now and I've been writing about them and we've uncovered so much.
That time and you know the so many people as well that I've interviewed and got to know his friends over the years who passed away who died horrible deaths having been abused and drag to war pension tribunal the deathbed some things by the government and this year.
We had a couple of big break through so there was a government study that we help win which I came back and said yes the test veterans do died in greater numbers and I do have more cancel directions to prove it this time.
We had a campaign for the prime minister to look veterans in the eye and meet and hear their stories for the first time and we are a couple of weeks Johnson became the first Prime Ministers since Churchill order the first test in 1952 about all this 20-years and awards and we also managed to uncover the fact that the government had known about some of these illnesses and deaths and the high rates.
And the stationery office confirm to ask that that was never published and say the veterans.
Just went aware of it take the Daily Mirror at home, and I must say it's a bit read and your great journalist.
Thank you very much.
Is it good Cross station to have the mirror in the ftir as my mum and dad? I said like a male.
That's fine.
Forget the garden as well.
Don't just get one online and and and the Guardian I look at 2, but I must say it's full of energy at the moment and you heard of a is the meteorite for historian Maggie Brown welcome back to the show.
Thank you letter and you've been following the voice of the list of year awards for excellence in broadcasting as we recording this morning play been up to where they have these loads every year and today was really good because there are 12 hours if I say that 6 of them for audio or radio basically are shared between Radio 4.
You'll understand what I mean, but you know one of the boys was the week and Westminster which I didn't know be going for 90 years which is really good Chris Mason got the award for best presenter and he's coming to stand back from doing any questions because he's just not too much honestly he was going off to the Isle of Skye think to actually do a broadcast it's a very interesting things that one of the key things about today was that they launched their own campaign save our broadcasting which is a social Media campaign and it just shows Greek of anxiety and concern so he was part of this kind of move ready.
I think to check the government's Enthusiasm for taking a part of the public service broadcasters that we are talking about public service broadcasters former BBC Trust chairman Lord Chris Patten was chatting to Andrew Marr this week, and it said that the colour of the government's current policy on the BBC
He is a Tory Lord made him feel sick pretty strong words.
What do you make his comments and I think that he's joined by many others the Conservative Party that alone on the labour benches the government does appear to be bearing down very heavily on the BBC and all sorts of areas.
There's a lot at stake for the BBC and because I frozen the licence fee for 2 years on $18 did that was the culture secretary the sort of mood she really made the BBC's had to announce the series of cutbacks as stopping BBC4 CBBC coming off their the savings which are peripheral at this moment, but show the kind of pressure that the cuts and make appointment it should be actually celebrating a century of success.
Whether you think it should be exactly the same as it is now is another matter.
I don't think politicians should.
Play the BBC or appointments to the BBC and that's been out anywhere near appointing director generals or anything else.
It's not one for the culture.
Secretary is one third the general public and it's not fair to the correct position of Genesis have a dog to lamp post and if you are upsetting the government and power then you are doing it right and you have thought if you have German as the top of your government that that is the prevailing and you have however it stops also putting pressure on the BBC this week was Watchdog Ofcom they've been told to improve their Handling of complaints especially in regards to impartiality in my research.
They found that 39% of viewers think that the BBC is biased which seemed pretty high to me.
Does this suggest like that beyond sort of general government pressure that there is a real impartiality problem.
I think the problem with the BBC as it has so many outlets for example.
They're saying that the number of complaints a double.
The ones that ITV has the BBC has a whole set of radio Services as well and it also has its online presence and all of the different range of channels.
I think that always needs to be an examination recently was listening to a very interesting interview with the new chief executive officer of ITN of course she was saying that the whole thing about impartiality was key to the services that ITV puts out as well the BBC has a special Duty because it it's a national completely funded by licence repairs.
I think it does need to improve the clearly hasn't been an explanation when they reject a complaint and don't further that hasn't been these necessary feedback that you would perhaps expect so it can clean up it's act but I do think that it's already doing that to be honest one of the interesting things.
Think about this so is that the influence of something which happened 25 years ago which was the Princess Diana interview and Martin Bashir and there were two occasions into its which published in 2021 and that inheritance has definitely coloured the belief that there is something really wrong at the BBC that is quite a historical the huge issue and maybe has also resonated with the public as well turn into the distal side of the news Google News redesigned its platform to mark the platforms 20th birthday Susie 20 years of Google News has been marked with big tensions with traditional journalism.
How are the big platforms of you today on Fleet Street is it getting any better? They still got a difficulty journalists trying to co-operate with the big platforms to get their pieces out there to understand.
How they work and use the algorithms to the best potential and then.
Can you change it to the platforms of other things they need to do as well as a David and Goliath battle and it's not fair and it's not being done in the interest of spreading using information is being done in the interest of prophets and that's how Fleet Street has always worked since it's not the end of the world, but it does need sorting out and the fact that Google left Spain when the Spanish government try to fix this and now is reopening back in Spain it does show perhaps at the big platform as I've realised that where they've got to move to but I really think they need to understand.
They have a social responsibility John Lewis understand that from day one doesn't matter if your broadcast or press if you're writing a Blog you know you have a social responsibility to what it is that you're doing and the big platform speak operations you make billions of dollars.
They need to appreciate that a bit more to a few motor Roxy reporters here there or 20% of people look at a mirror store.
Isn't that I was reading the other week that Jim Waterson the Gardens and the editor wrote talking about news deserts becoming a real problem in the UK Google News could help solve this issue of news deserts, or is it much more fundamental than that but I actually don't think that it deserts is entirely correct.
I do of course accept Google and of course YouTube and tiktok big platforms now, which younger people are getting the news and information fun facts and figures that delivered to them so that the whole world has very significantly changed they have been initiatives and factions article with the BBC funds some local journalism.
I live in two places in London South London and I live in Wales and orderly.
I have found that the Press in my local.
In my tears have been remarkably up-to-date and quite tough on local councils and on reporting things that matter to people it's not but he's basically right.
There's a terrible deficit journalism is not as well fundadores well regarded as it could be and we are relying on the social media Giants to if you like Media certainly with younger audiences CCC the digital markets competition and consumer bill which is currently being drafted will introduce new rules for the Tech Giants in the UK what would you have to buy some people with brains? You know how it works don't have much faith that person currently reside the Department of Culture so would you help someone with brains would do it's not me going to do it or figure out this horrible gordian Knot information and who has control over it, but I do think the questions that were facing both.
Free speech in the online world you need to have some big brains on it.
We don't currently have some big brains.
You know if you put me in that position.
I would struggle and I will admit that I'm struggle and that can you don't elect journalist Power walking around make mincemeat of you then you're not the person who should be deciding these big issues.
She has got around to hopefully I have pink feet but I'm pretty certain that the lawyers in the Great Britain to work at Google and Facebook and tiktok.
I'm going to be able to our class the people currently on our government from benches.
Well.
We talked about media installation and the UK government's proposed a bill of rights and Dominic raab has promised the bill with boost freedom of the press and freedom of expression by making it harder for court to order journalist Tudor Close best sources is the bill good news for journalism, or is this the government putting lipstick on an extremely controversial bill linked to The Failed deportation of flights to know?
Won the last week is casted he has to say that anything he's got to law degrees and not of single brain cell between years.
They only reason they're bringing in this Bill of Rights so cool is 2 takeaway some rights that's the only purpose to it is not there because we are lacking rights at the moment.
It's because they're saying people have too many breaths.
So it's a funeral Rites what they're talking.
We do have some issues with in terms of in a quartz be able to order as they did at the sun for example ordering to open up journalists mobile phone communications to bust out their sources and dealing with a very much doubt that's going to happen that this bill of rights for example the government is busy saying that they Gonna Give protections to the Ministry of Defence has not being bothered by vexatious cases as a result of foreign military activity also doing is stopping our own servicemen being able to see their come up with their own human rights are being disrespected.
This is if this is anyway going to improve any single human beings Circumstance on the planet.
I will eat my bedroom door.
It's just not going to happen in quite the way that's been sold especially I'm really doesn't Street and I love the things that it does and all the different newspapers spent most of them and some of the right wing papers with a good journalist who know the problems we've got here.
I just turning out about things like this bill of rights and then not giving it the scrutiny, but it's Fleet Street job to do it.
Just repeating things that Dominic raab says and you know you might as well repeat stuff that tells you it means nothing and it's just it's a constant campaign these days to get to the next general election going to have that the next two years and we have to scrutinise the things they say.
That's why they're putting my stuff.
We are already treated like second-class citizens, because we're journalist.
You know our freedom information request I judge different to those of the general public the general public but just because the government got a bit of a headline issue with migrants for example is no reason to take away the rights of military servicemen using a lot of battles into a lot of headlines and I really think that the sum of the headlines that have been written need to be rewritten as you got a hop-off.
Are you working on anything exciting at the moment? Where can listeners follow your writing and it's because northern newspapers are really following up the stuff that we've been doing for 20 years which is a great pity.
I would love to have some competition on this story for once and to actually talk to event and have to get my
Fight for this fight for the interview so is anyone listening those who he wants to find out a bit more and it's all there, but yeah if you people to follow me on doing on.
Fleet Street fox Twitter and suitable for the Daily Mirror so just Google things and I'll pop up into your timelines in flight arrival rise and both onto radio I spoke to Rebecca Frank FM's content director earlier in the week her network launched an ad free subscription service and I asked Rebecca why it's key to keeping radio attractive for young audiences, so you get a 30-day free trial that's if you sign up now, but only going it's 399 a month and for that you get an ad Break Free experience of any station.
You were so get 10 brand new stations from case we have a lot of history spin-off history trance history slow jams and finally sort of big headline.
Skip up to six tracks an hour.
That's why even on the main station correct and it will take a huge amount of work behind the scenes at the music theme and something better coming in obviously sort everything but that's really exciting as well because it starts to put you know radio in the palm of the listeners.
I would say my expectations are that features like that are going to meet for quite a long time because we know when you've talked about a lot and you're so previous Media you know that it's a serendipity the creation of radio which is part of its appeal, but people are very different and he's got different ways of thinking.
It's gonna be really interesting after you know good 6-months to reanalyze was retaking for the kids audience exciting fascinating thing actually you 399 gets power stations that are on it as well.
So if you listen to a couple of Brands I think it probably becomes an even better off it, doesn't it?
Just thinking about colour audiences and kisses at the Vanguard of a younger audience your breakfast show hosts a very much tiktok stars are there from before but they've done very well on tiktok, what is going to radio in an age of tiktok? Where should it be? What should it be doing to to reach those people who are may be scattered across the internet Mum you know what I'm having real talk because there's no point in being anything else if you Matt and your listeners.
There is no grass types of study that can absolutely prove that being really big of social media equals more people listening to the radio.
It's just long and short of it what we can do as an industry.
We've all done.
I'm sure my various different companies is have a look at the potency of our brands and see how you guys are audiences are.
An existing and young audiences are in different ages are on those different platforms and we all utilise our best emotional intelligence and Strategic Thinking to make sure that you're telling those audiences who are being engaged on that platform the right platform the right content for tiktok is doing the right thing for tiktok.
Can we automatically draw a line from that success to you then not necessarily and it's very difficult to prove that and I'd like to send me to send me a study that things that can clean and I hope you'll have to clean a tick on Excel as leaders and you no more intelligent people than me around.
It is if there is love for that Brand and stickiness and potency be that commercially by the sword of Destiny you're getting there sort of general bars the conversation the.pro generating we're going to be in a better position to therefore attract attention for your radio platform to sell time that might be hard and fast call-to-action to download an app or to listen to particular time on a
I know that I love my competitors will have sort of have badges on their social content at the moment that pointed to sort of listening to particular program for all experimental observations all experimenting with is a call to Action is it a badge that's constantly there in a video the truth is I think we've just got to keep trying at least different things sticking on next out and you know make sure that we are being strategically not driving content into the wind on to the parties and social platforms at same time that we're not doggedly telling people to listen to the radio at the beginning and end of every single bit content because content has to be a platform at that time for especially for younger audience.
I suppose everything keeps you awake at night is that constant mulling over that strategy obviously pretty much for music intensive music at the core of it.
That's all the things as well.
I saw recently the started.
Can I get involved with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation how much is the new?
Music output important to brand growth to the describing what you do.
That's the one we have to be a great experience in terms of force of core people spend time with our brand but more and more we are getting you know social only breeds partnership breeds for the about real-life activations for any radio Brando any brand trying to appeal to human beings a coffee this and you know very high quality content is across all of the platforms that are audience is a promiscuous on every single day standing for something is really important be very clear about who you are what you care about even if you're kind of got abroad thing like kiss have to be a really really important thing that doesn't mean that in every single Media that we do we need to explain that but it means that as a broad brush stroke over period of time.
I got a year across a month that needs to be enough that's enough memorable moments enough memorable links and
Enough meaning for conversation about meaningful things because our audience are complex and although we are in many ways Kisstory is a place that we all go to escape put on some Bangers listen to JLo on a Thursday afternoon.
That's fantastic.
You peel the thought of newer audience members and potentially to retain older audience members who have no choice.
You could possibly save it comes to radio because it's maybe it's potentially more than 80 medium being of his thought we stand about and been written about being talked about all those things are an important.
So yeah the party fnaf foundations in it's early stages, but we got some really good plans for later this year so regional events in real life with young people partnership with Warner Music here also on board with the foundation dedicating all of his kind of nun punditry life to helping people getting to Employment where you are a younger person a parent of a human being with any kind of heart and soul in the UK
Emission control touch you really can't at the moment.
What have people got to look out for from kiss over the summer this year.
I feel like I'm certainly feel like that.
So we've got some more Activity coming up we've got partnerships with for A5 on the festivals in the UK coming up both on the ground and from contents.
That's really exciting or really hoping to do some this year says a lot that who we are at the brand as well and obviously we've just done our first announcement for kids Orchard House Party which is back in real life in Wembley for October which is not done a real life on yet with the team.
So that should be really good so events and getting out there and making noise as well.
It's not consolidating stuff like premium resources brand new sort of conversation.
So yeah, just really excited actually get out there and brush holders with your audience a bit more.

At the Novello Theatre you already know you get a love it welcome back seizes have to pop off but Maggie is still here with me and it's time for some news in brief.
There's a new streamer in town with paramount plus officially launching in the UK this week Maddie the launch came with a surprise partnership announcement with Sky I kind of looked and I thought I mean probably like a great many people we have flicks.
We have our you know the smart TVs everywhere and I don't think I'm going to pay £6.99 for another service now.
Maybe you know a bit too old and grumpy anymore stop but I can't really cope with the choice.
I've got nav and with limited time.
So I wish it well.
I see it's going to start making original content.
It's up and running and it may be that will be the time you know two dependant and maybe have a go.
They probably left a bit late.
I'm not surprised.
It's being put on Sky but I don't really said it's going to make a material difference really to people arguing for you.
So you'll have to wait I actually think at the moment that I've been spending far too much time watching news and that has been so compelling I know that we're all cooling off a bit on Ukraine but it has been a most extraordinary period couple of months well, if you been watching the news you are just ready to play against yourself for the media quiz.
It's your chance to show all that skill in one go again describe three Media properties of ruffle the feathers of their readership this week.
I'm going to give you the story.
You've just got to tell me the news brand.
Number one which UK publisher had its comment section explode this week after a story mysteriously vanished the times it's to do with o as I should say magnificent again this week, but no it's the prime minister trying to get a job for his dear Carrie in a rather sort of unconventional and I'm completely wrong Nana but why they run out the times and probably told the times at midnight, but the story wasn't right although it does appear that the story was I don't know why it was Paul but it was Paul is Streisand effect is not the people called this when suddenly no one would really noticed it before but they all now notice it because of all the Ferrari put stories out just by midnight also so I know today and then I I noticed it's gone but then the story just got worse from hasn't it? Because he's been trying to get into a car.
Play well paid job which they don't seem to be denying.
I'm in the you know it's all Rings very true to forresters activities on the phone number to which major US publisher is offer annual digital news subscription for $50 a year until the year 2072.
Are you have to be under 30 when you really think I might be dead as well.
Yes, this is the worst in post marking 50 years since it cover the Watergate break-in Jeff bezos is inviting it subscribers to sign up for half a century at half price exhausted.
Every time I try to sort of look at her story you find people trying to offer you an offer you know that I have had different subscriptions in the past and continually trying to just low you in for very little money and the New York Times if you subscribe to unsubscribe you have to ring them up which
A little bit sneaky which UK newspapers raised half a million in 2 days by offering readers the chance to buy there's no pass.
This is the new European this is the Pop-Up newspaper that was kind of conceived in the wake of the brexit referendum in the funding round on Monday and by Wednesday had surpassed 4 million quid from 600 investors.
Are you aware of the new European Jarvis I don't buy it.
I think the people who put money into us on play Lionel barber, and I think I might also have put money into it.
I'm glad that people on Fusey astic about it and I do know somebody who works for it.
That's a great idea.
Let's face it for a lot of people brexit the strange itself to be a disaster.
I'm doing great damage to the country potentially so the idea that you can rely with a brand that is actually looking forward to you whatever supposed to withdrawing has photo.
To qualify people and that's demonstrated by the phone, but doesn't it where you if you create something that's sort of appeals to your heart as well as your head you can extract the wallet or purse track of your expert commentary on Twitter actually I mean I am in communication with some of the people I mean senior people working to see whether it can be aborted so I'm following too closely and there will be some form of debate and event around my Channel 4 history books in November for tomorrow at the anniversary of this week.
