Hello and welcome to the media podcast I am Faraz Osman on the show today.
We are behind the scenes of the British podcast Awards when we speak to make an award-winning shows included red-handed code epic hormones coil and many more that's all coming up in this edition of the media podcast stops Matt Deegan he is a little busy today running the British podcast Awards that I've managed to sneak backstage here at Kennington Park in South London and Nick his microphone so I can attempt to make friends with podcast at best and brightest will gather here for the 5th annual awards ceremony the global podcast industry is set to surpass 1 billion dollars in 2022 and the award is an opportunity to celebrate those created leading and shape.
Industry 100 judges have deliberated with 33 categories including smartest podcast death network Mona the year and the big one that the podcast of the Year winners podcast have captured the judges hearts in 20-22 what to do at the it goes really deep into its chosen topic and through this narrow Focus it reveals so much about British culture and Society more broadly the presenter and production are exceptionally good and the podcast treats its subject matter with gravitas.
It really received elsewhere in British Media the winner is I'm here to go to decode podcast exec producer sound designer.
Producer producer award number one in the first of all of the night like like a presenting it to everyone that can see how you feeling it was that you'll be out right place it for me to say thank you for the podcast is you can do a deep dive into the UK's biggest black artists and rap artists right now.
It's ok mountains and how's your day off on Spotify as well which is a big deal, so the show goes out of dissect which is our sister show in the US accept American rapper and Spotify want to do a UK version and we work with them to develop here and bring in some new elements like the incredible sound design and depth and text you.
Recordings and the voice actors w's all to bring in which sounds into the mix and then also finding someone the over the one and only creating a poet and hip-hop and lover who just bring so much to experience like I feel like I want to get him recording my like voicemail.
I get this amazing if you wanted to do your voicemail getting the key it really feels like this.
Show is is almost like you know this is not a ramble chat between like mate.
This is so highly produce highly researched everything out the detail you're going always feels like Spotify to make you listen to this before you listen to the next.
You know the next album think there's a there's a Sensibility that you guys have.
Got to take this stuff seriously no and and it is that kind of what your intention.
Is you want to listen to this so don't just go to gigs and start starting out lyrics later understand.
Is that what you getting at like we really respect the artist that recovering so whether it's gave are Skepta and we know the amount of influences and the history that the music that they're very make has and we just partly researcher for ourselves and try to understand those albums as best we can and then once we've researched it.
We want to share that and you know I respect for those artist of just go up.
There is so many layers to what they do when coughing in mainstream culture, you don't get space to talk about that so we really happy to do that.
That's a secret alright you going to give us the vibe.
You might need to ask Spotify ok and here we have to try and find out.
The rest of the day and you up to later as well.
Thank you so much, so we are at the current affairs podcast the media.
So how's it going level there were in the category the Guardian sorted economy political the week and pretty much do everything for This podcast including the bloody social media.
So it's a lot of time and it's best to get it working.
It's it feels amazing taxi.
Have it like knowledge to the level with the with the contenders that we can place to buy news and current affairs royalty royalty.
People who have done this in their kitchen produce a podcast that captures the imagination like this describe the situation and photos with them for the and they're both shaking like least they're both coming to terms with those achieved which is absolutely fantastic.
Are you drinking different you was giving a voice to the people there in the news, but generally kind of don't get a chance to speak in front of a microphone or camera right.
We both works at papers and broadcasters in mainstream media and we just have observed that there's certain demographics that will be reported on all the time, but we've kind of forgotten to send to their voices in the story sometimes too even at first and lived experience comments at all.
So that could be people who are crossing the Channel in dinghies.
It could be sex workers trans people and racial minorities gender minorities and so we try to.
Investigate the stories that matter to them and then to discuss the headlines and discuss current affairs but with them and their analysis at the centre, so it has to be a little bit more critical than and that Word analysis is really key because a lot of the time people when they when is minority groups are spoken to that uses case studies and they may be like shop down a few lines at the end of an article but what are they are case studies in that kind of Clinical term they also have expertise because if you've crossed the channel in a boat.
You are the person who should really be the person has been consulted about what law would make sense for people crossing the Channel in both together, but I can tell you're so excited about if you can't even like you.
Just had a massive global you must be looking for some news.
Please.
Can you bring on board?
Produced by Dino and Persephone going to launch This podcast at the end of August we're going to try and do a day in which isn't breathless after reporting on Donald Trump for the last 4 years, so yes exactly so we going to stand back.
We're going to try and make it engaging going to try and make it fun but we're going there going to be another assist in this and thought fullness and you know bit of history and so we will try and work and it will really excited to get started uni podcast to be no too kind of make it will happen but most of all the media form for picking up the best current affairs podcasts.
It's the moment for you and enjoy it.
Category as weighty as well being in 2022.
It is not lost on us when I show can still approach a topic is overlooked and life-altering as menopause with a sense of humour to engage with their listeners and has provided an incredible form for a huge Secular Society who are so often left two devices and this is a thing right you know you guys start This podcast yourselves it completely independent right tell us about it.
It is we were just hanging out together and we were very sleeping moaning the state-of-art different hormonal issues and actually I want to make a paramedic pause podcast for a couple of years and as we're talking I said to the guys.
This is a podcast is this a podcast for friends we chat together because when the big things that I'm really passionate about is it when you going through lots of different hormonal issues.
No one was talking about you quite lonely and isolated because myself personally I wasn't getting much help from the GP in a lot of campaigning and things get better in that respect but when you're not gonna talk about if you're lonely so I thought if we all get together and we chat like notes and all the other people who are going through this could be part of Gran and feel that they're not on their own and that's the whole thing that's what it's all about him being here with us, but it is a whole collective right.
You've got is a 5 of you is that right probably say oh my god so fabulous and we're mates.
You know I mean we used to go out drinking together 20 years ago.
You know this is not something that we've just sorted it makes you hang out.
Just happened to decide to make a podcast together and thank you guys because there was a lot of evenings and you got a bear in mind perimenopausal women a tired and grumpy so and hot and so you know a lot of heart and soul into it, so I'm very grateful to you really grateful to Emma and Terry for giving up the time and put it in for it.
Thank you.
Not going to get this moment you win this but you had you had this award presented to you by some people right if you going to talk about that, but it didn't happen so my god I can barely speak I'm afraid I'm handing you your reward like I said everything is a casual Saturday
Pause pause that smell menopause you my love to everyone else on the cars and I'd have the best often is the euros now.
This was born fairly recently right and it's just popped off.
Will it mean? Why should I listen to it? Why is it important? Why is it just one moment of the Year poetry podcasts which looks at how black hair in sex with the black British experience and what it can tell us about culture identity and race in the UK and outside because I'm tired.
I want to transition my hair cos I had 20 likes her to go back to natural questions about that and I really want to make a podcast that I wish I had I was going up because I feel like if I listen to this and I was younger then I would make a decision for my hair today.
Yeah, ok so moment of the Year came from so helping the answer produce.
It there were certain key players in the hair industry in the UK that we had to speak to.
A bit more contacts off and on podcast listen, but the black British of hair the hair industry is owned by the south Asian community in the UK which doesn't make sense when you think about who the call uses likes after her very specific.
It's generally only black people that anyway, so the moment of the years we spoke to the CEO of a very large he and when we broke the questions.
He kept insisting that the company were black owned, but that's doing your stuff would check company house and everything it was at least 80% was owned by British Pakistani man it was it was by no means a lot of land company during interview.
I think he got very very confident kind of thought we've been talking to two young girls and thought that we may be don't have our stuff about us.
And he got the money let it's guard down and just told us in pounds and I mean that episode was a long episode with very owners but that episode did really well and social did really well, because it's parked a lot of conversation and even news articles about it because people say hold on a second it was someone hands but yourselves that community but then people start sharing their stories about how they were treated in the stores.
How they thought they'd be following followed around the store just treated in funny manners, but they will but we are called so it became a big discussion and I think it was we have this stuff that we talk about on the kitchen table right about the house on Sunday but you don't really talk about it out loud and you don't bring it to the nobody cares alright.
Let's rock the boat and I think what we did on apologetically discussions and this particular moment we bought something to the like that was really important.
Public interest it was important for people to understand.
This is what people that you buy from feel about us as a community of the industry.
That's not the point where it is.
It's the fact that they were trying to provide us back in business when they're not and be that they were saying that they don't care about businesses when it understands who owns the bins that we buy from so that's why it cause such a big discussion here is it's obviously podcast have the little circle to have this superfan.
You know what I think it's that time of the year.
Is it breaks out of the original place it came from this was a thing that was on the podcast but like once it went out everywhere.
It was right.
You guys were getting a lot of shares and it must have really elevated what you guys doing the podcast.
Because I don't like that was just like a really good in to get people to engage with the podcast actually realise there's so many other aspects that we don't like the warehouse used towards back here come from my why is it that I feel like I'm judging of my life.
I have straight hair.
It's because of coronavirus changed towards her way back when you got one moment that went nuts and you've also got the content which is why the series doing bits so like congratulations and yeah.
I hope that you are back for more moments to come.
Let's make it happen.
We can take a short break and will be back right after this.
Celebrate summer with Mamma Mia take it funny and then on stage in London that sells sunniest musical Mamma Mia at the Novello Theatre you already know you love it going to the UK's energy challenges equinor is looking at the energy picture from wind power Toyland gas and carbon capture and storage helping the UK achieve a smooth energy transition by delivering the Broad energy makes we all need today and tomorrow find out more at equinor.
Play Sunshine behind the scenes at the British podcast awards and things are heating up as we right along to the Big One Podcast of the year but first let's find out who is the best new podcast reset a truly inclusive show delivered with honesty exuberance and Charm by presenter who welcome listeners with their guests absorbing life stories.
There was no doubt the guest felt safe and heard we could have 4 hours the winner is OutKast UK I am I'm so shocked.
I didn't think it was going to be us me at all.
I wrote the little bit that I said that there was meant to read out.
I wrote it like 5 minutes beforehand on my phone in my draughts on my email and then I couldn't find it.
So I'll catch UK is it me chatting to people I love and respect and whose stories I want told timely in terms of news like on world AIDS day for example Jay hawkridge huge on tiktok HIV activist came on chatting to me Liverpool just me I did pretty much everything video and audio and I just there in chats of these people on let me tell you a story and I think the key to it is allowing them people have to feel safe to really share and at times over shirt and sometimes.
It's funny.
I've tried your episodes as well.
It's really dark if I'm honest that's the mix of what we doing.
It's just people stories.
What what happened in their lives.
I'm more interesting than Fiction a lot of the time.
This is the numbers on tiktok Be Wild so like you is that is that mean by Design is that mean by accident like how's that happened? I had a feeling that it would do well on tiktok so I was not convinced from the get-go complete visualisation seem to be expensive and me and I ended up doing that with some episodes anyway.
I really wanted them moments to be supported with video so you could really see.
I think he was more powerful on social media when it's supported by the video isn't it? So you know it's sticking on tiktok a podcast it's aimed at gen z and millennials.
It just seemed like the perfect platform for it and then we are nearly 2 million views on tiktok loads of comments and a little community of people who are really got each other's back.
It's been it's been amazing might help you get some more people if you could give us anybody that you would want to do an interview with who's the big the big get Fallout cost UK Ian McKellen it's the big Legend but also I want a combined with people who were just coming through got really interesting stories.
I want more trans voices on the show I want this to be more people of on the show these people are underrepresented in podcasting and the lgbtq plus community as a baby shoe with sort of sideline and people of colour and I want to do some as a white man.
I want to do so.
About sort of amplifying their voices so yeah big man gets like that, but also who's really interesting in the news.
That's got a really compelling story.
I want them on more so than really big names.
Do you know what I mean massive congratulations on winning new podcast? Is it say it say it once so like you must be absolutely thrilled and hope to see you back here picking up the next awards for what's to come best network or publisher.
That's what we doing like the bronze award goes to the Radio 5 Live be Silver Award goes to stack.
And for the gold award the judges said a small team full of Sparks they have their finger on the Pulse creating podcast which could not be made 5 or even 3 years ago.
They are doing it first winner of the gold award Mags creative.
Do I'm here with the winner of Best network or publisher Max creative and Meghan producer network or publisher for you and network or a publisher? Would you class it as that we work with brands like Facebook and Google to bring up with us alive.
We also work with commissioners and individuals and Talent as well to work on number of podcasts.
I'm going to say that you sure you love all your children equally, but if it's not marry avoid if you could snogging of your podcasts which one if we can I say new launch, but I was not Laura Whitmore and Iain Stirling for the podcast Partners in Crime which is our latest original and it's a true Crime Comedy podcast and it's very funny and marry one of your broadcast I'm guessing it's only the one that's been most successful in the longest running with that we want to go with the long-distance with it will only work incident on a podcast called I am which is all around sort of his self development journey talking to a really inspirational people about that.
This is a really long term relationship which is why we're going to marry him and I will never be so rude of to get you to avoid any of you every single one, but like there must be some that little bit more quirky a bit out there.
So what are the ones that like you you feel are I like the weird ones that the non-conventional podcast you have any network quirky abstract podcast That actually do incredibly well.
Yeah.
I think the first one that pop to mine just because it was so different for us to life sentence.
It was something that we did in about 6-months 3 months in between that and it was.
I can't remember any of my words about it anymore.
It's actually a sentence is a fictional narrative piece of very immersive.
It's about the top of its climate change and how we running out of time, but it's done in a very subtle call Wayne and it's got 30 members of cast members in it, so it's incredibly ambitious, but I would say it is definitely more on the quirky side, but really powerful.
You are not just winning for a podcast you waiting for like a letter of podcast so if they will get shared amongst all of those I'm sure it's going to be prouder place in the maximum profit.
Have you got offices post? I mean this is mad.
We don't even have an office like this is why we're all over in a bit of shock so yeah, it feels very sorry we are getting an office but right now will remote working from home.
Independent really kind of new on the scene and start up my sister and she's not here.
I would love to meet but because you and your sister Hannah started the whole of Meg's VAT come about what you just like hanging around the Christmas dinner table thinking let's let's start a podcast network, what's the story and I have been working together sort out as a marketing agency my background in marketing and one of the first project that we were brought to do a side from events and social media was work on The deliciously Ella podcast and we saw that go excited about that and we decided we should put a big risk and big decision to actually Nisha agency.
Specifically into podcast we turned on any other work and since then we haven't read it back, but one that definitely paid off.
How many years did you for years?
Come about what you just like hanging around the Christmas dinner table thinking let's let's start a podcast network, what's the story and I have been working together for a long time but we are marketing and one of the first project that we were brought to do a side from events and social media was work on The deliciously Ella podcast and we saw that go from strength to strength so excited about that and we decided which is quite a big risk and a big decision to actually meet you out agencies specifically into podcast we turned on any other work and since then we haven't really got back paid off.
How many years did you for years to winning best network so you must be absolute Road
Thanks Margaret Stokes and she was just the biggest champion of us, so just means even more basically and Congratulations I hope to see many more of your podcast here and in bronze the northern Bank Job silver wild crimes.
And all the churches said This podcast grab their attention immediately the hosts intensely personal perspective guided us through a complicated journey of twists and Turns over soundscapes and Spencer true Crime storytelling left as Lost At Sea searching for an answer to who did it the weather is the catch the best true Crime podcast of the catch.
Nice to meet you.
Thank you so much.
I'm a bit shocked to be honest.
So I'm Jake run message heard of uk-based podcast company.
Martin I am the executive producer from audible is that right you want to give us a story but can you give us like the Crib notes for it? So basically? It's one of the biggest cocaine bust in history, which happened over a decade ago of which people were sent down for you know well over 100 years in combination, but there was a lot of evidence to suppose that maybe they might be innocent so we thought working with Raphael Rowe who obviously is an amazing investigative journalist in its own right, but he's sort of dinner community of one because he's also a miscarriage of Justice
Spent 12 years in jail for murdering didn't commit so for him to investigate.
You know yes, and it's an interesting story, but have people's lives been ruined forever for something that maybe didn't do such an awesome like delivering.
What is a really complicated story down there anywhere to be honest but when you heard how do you store I can come to you guys.
Did you just picked to Audible or you found Wi-Fi and he picks the UK how did it get to the point what I mean? I I'm sure of harassed Michelle for a really long time as for how we can work with that and I've known Raphael for a number of years familiar with because there's been appeals in recent years to try and prove the Innocence of the potential of these people and you no working with RAF it was very much.
We want it to work on.
All together where you know he could yes uses investigative journalist skills, but also in an arena that he felt incredibly passionate about about you know if there are people in jail if you say things they didn't do we properly investigate that and determine one Way Or Another if actually we need to look again podcast and and they've done some incredible that advertising a Martin around as well if it's working for you like the stories must already be coming through you know even during the pandemic when you would think people wanted you know good feel good stories actually they want to crime and I think it's you know people want to go really deep into stories and you know it and you know I think sometimes people have to cry because they think well.
You know things could be a lot worse things going on.
Really excited recently for us as we just signed a partnership with the key of independent support the amazing work.
They are doing in Ukraine and bringing the stories from the Frontline of Warren in a way which is in amplifying amazing Chinese do they have on the ground? They're experiencing at so to do that an audio.
Is it is a real privilege and honour plus Natalie you absolutely thrilled and I hope you have the best afternoon as a result hi congratulations so I am with the winner of the brand new category the climate category which is made by the company and we wanted to make a podcast that made it easy for anybody anywhere.
The easiest way and entry point to get into nature and we Face issues around diversity nature head on and this is really tenuously urban and Country don't need to go to some special Park buy some fancy binoculars.
You can just go out there and see some vs.
That's kind of key part of the leader of the leader of Lambeth and you've got a beautiful park here to do today.
It's genuinely I kinda came it's such a 5 to do in the water my here like we did it last year and Brockwell Park so it feels like you are not at home of the British podcast awards.
Delighted to be hosting this a very young entrepreneurs and creatives and it's just fantastic be hosting something that's all about people making progress that we can discuss the issues of the day or entertain and I have the leader of the burrow at being the first to declare a climate emergency in London I'm absolutely thrilled to present towards birding and you said it's about anyone can listen to birds and I think particularly important for those of us living in really densely populated in urban environments and we saw under coving.
How is things we haven't streets were quieter and for us.
It's all about enabling our young people particularly to have that exposure to nature and ecology that we often don't get access to green spaces and protect green spaces and the scissors.
I know the sunshine always been in South London so so it's nice and warm the food good like you've done an amazing job has been here and we also know that is out so Congratulations again to Bergen Jane and thank you so much for alone here with the winner of Alyssa Choice Award red handy with the booty.
You must be absolutely thrilled with this cos this is actually listeners voting for this award has a feeling it blows my mind is like completely surreal because like we set up there.
We are an independent cost we started 6 years ago with a £10 microphone.
We had no background in anything to do with n and sound up here in front of the calibre of winners and the calibre of British Broadcasting that you have in 2022 and to win the listeners choice and know that are fans.
Invested in an arts and the stories that were telling it just blows my mind especially being you know it's true Crime podcasts which yeah, it's hard to cut through the noise on that so we are just so humbled every time every time this is like a second time write like if you want to have a sense that This podcast is massive you've won the list the choice twice in a row crazy the first time we did it we found out we found out the night before that we had one and it was you know I was at my parents house in lockdown, and I just remember being in complete shock because we never ever anticipated not to happen.
Just one year but to happen the second year is incredible and we we did make some bold promises though to our lesson as we said that if they could ask if they could get off the gold award and yet again, then we would jump out of a plane so now my ear hurts and I have to go jump out of a plane.
Ok.
I mean have you booked it already or we need to do it?
So now that we have one we need to go and find somebody who loves shampowder Ocean's 11 sort of way and like still the plane and this is the reason they picked because we will do whatever you want you tell us what you want us to do and we covered a case two weeks ago of a woman whose husband Sabotage her parachute when she jumped out of a plane remember this story so if without any Sabotage maybe we'll be fine.
You'll probably want to check your parachute a couple of times.
Come back next year hopefully win again and I'll let you know the big ones been announced podcast of the year is a daughter from the BBC World Service thrilled if we connected a straight to Nairobi in Kenya and on the line.
We have the host and creator of water to combo we can hear you loud and clear from my mind blown away by this so you are the winner of podcast of the year and I'm so to talking to you.
Is that your your story is that you just a podcast mega fan and then pitch an idea and then now here you are the winner of the best podcast that could possibly this.
Can I tell you a little bit about the story to my understanding is that you one you enter the competition that you saw a part of the world service and this idea and then you're calling out in Nairobi for daughter.
Is it if it's your first podcast you have you done anything like this before if you gone straight from stories about my own life, but I got.
Dave is quite amazing you so you've done a few episodes now and going to be a few people who will written letters to their daughters and have you got a favourite all you have to ask what your favourite is.
What is the most incredible series you must be absolutely thrilled to go from being a podcast FIFA found all the way to winning podcast the Year of the British podcast Awards the most congratulations anything else asking if what the postage fees are to send a letter and they're very heavy podcast without in Nairobi is ok.
Well.
