Read this: Changes to some BBC local radio medium wave services
Summary: We know how much you love your local radio services, with more and more of you listening in different ways using FM, DAB or internet-based services such as BBC iPlayer Radio. On changes to medium wave coverage specifically, to identify areas where the impact would be felt the least, we conducted detailed assessments of the coverage of each BBC local radio station on FM, MW and DAB. Following this process, we trialled the switch-off of a number of medium-wave transmitters and asked for audience feedback. - www.bbc.co.uk

Where is the most reliable and detailed information on BBC MW full and partial closures published?
I emailed BBC Radio Devon some time back and - surprise - got no reply.
Some "information" suggests Radio Devon MW will be restricted to morning and
evening peak times, other sources suggest only Torbay is affected.
In many low-lying rural areas MW is the only or best option. FM and DAB signals can be
zero or subject to break-up. Freeview is NOT a serious alternative as you are tethered to an aerial socket
and can only listen when in a TV room. It would seem the BBC is following the fibre-outreach agenda:
focus on the denser populated areas;the others don't matter.
Information on reliable sources most welcome!

michael: According to the article at the link below (A516digital are usually pretty accurate) BBC Radio Devon will be switching off their Torbay transmitter only. There is no mention of any reductions of broadcasting hours for any remaining transmitters. There is also a news item confirming the same information on the BBC's reception advice site. The BBC have to make huge savings, Medium Wave broadcasting is expensive and is listened to by relatively few people. Freeview is a good alternative for many people and it is easy to connect a Freeview box to a Hi-Fi or audio system with an auxilary input to listen without a TV.

Thanks for the confirmation! This is what I found, but previously it was reported that Radio Devon on MW would be restricted to morning and early evening only. In many areas, FM and DAB coverage is satisfactory, but in low-lying and coastal areas only MW is reliable. It is understandable that the BBC shold review real need for MW, so it is welcome to know that we have a reprieve! The Freeview option is a bit like going back in time when you had to be in the living room to listen to the one "wireless set" in the house...
