Hi. For me to help you, just think of your problem and answer each question in turn. First, are you seeing the words "No Signal" or "Technical fault" on the TV screen?

SteveK:

Firstly you have too much signal as 99% will cause overload of the tuner as the received signal level varies as it does all the time. That could be causing your system to be uncertain whether it is receiving 1080p or 1080i services.

I am not aware that there is any 'switching' happening as it does not change on my system fed from Mendip.

Thanks MikeP:
I had put more or less the same question to Freeview. They say there is frequent switching from 1080p to 1080i by broadcasters within a program.

Presumably I need to reduce/attenuate the signal strength if you are right. What to, though? How do I do it? Won't this cause "bit error" problems?

Steve K:

You can use an attenuator to reduce an overly strong signal to an acceptable level. The ideal in most cases is a strength of between 60% and 85%, that will have no effect on the 'bit error' as the system uses robust error correction algorithms that run automatically. Bit errors only really come into play when the signal is weak or distorted by interference.

You could use a variable attenuator, such as https://www.amazon.co.uk/…8L6, or else fixed tyoes that are available with 3dB, 6dB and 12dB strengths but you would have to try different one starting with the lowest (3dB) one. If you do fit any of those, always add an extra flylead into the aerial socket of the TV so that the weight of the attenuator does not 'hang' on the socket as they are not designed to support their weight.

Hi,
My postcode is CB237XQ and my local transmitter (to which I'm tuned) is Sandy Heath.
A couple of weeks ago, after returning from a trip away, our Panasonic TV had lost the 7 day EPG; it just shows a couple of hours of programmes (I believe termed "now & next"?). I waited to see if it returned but it didn't. I tried a "dry tune" - this re-tuned all available channels, but didn't re-instate the EPG. I next tried a Factory Reset (Shipping Condition) which forced the auto-setup as for out-of-box TV. Again, all channels were successfully re-tuned in, but no EPG, just "now & next".
I am at a loss to understand what has happened, and how to fix it.
Have EPG transmissions/formats/code etc changed recently that I am unaware of, or is there something else?
Any thoughts or guidance would be very welcome.
Best regards,
Roy

Thanks for a really excellent and informative website, which has helped me to research why I lost BBC4 HD reception last year. This is part of the "700MHz clearance" but in the interim they have shifted Mux COM8 to 754MHz (and this carries BBC4 HD. We've been having to watch standard definition! This problem also affects other areas, I understand.

We installed a narrow band A TV aerial less than 10 years ago, as advised for the Crystal Palace transmitter since the early days of UHF transmissions. This was still being recommended at the time of Digital switchover (we are in a poor signal aerial due to a hill so the aerial goes on top of a 3 storey house - not easy to reach.) So we can no longer receive BBC4 HD. Our only solution is invest in a wide-band aerial apparently, at high cost.

I am angry that the BBC / Freeview and others advised using a tuned Band A aerial until relatively recently. Then moved one of our favourite channels to a frequency that can't be received by the previously recommended aerial.

At the very least I would like to complain to someone. But who can I complain to? The BBC complaints web page redirects me to a different page when I say I have a reception complaint, and there is no contact or complaints page. I can't find any complaints page to use - not even on this forum. I suppose I could spend hours on the phone.
So I am posting this! I know it won't do much good, and is of little import compared to other current issues with our government in meltdown, but I still wonder where is the best place to complain to?

William Blake: Official advice since digital terrestrial TV began over 20 years ago has been to fit a wideband aerial as many transmitters started to broadcast on frequencies outside of their original grouping. Who advised you to have a Group A aerial fitted?

Hi
I have just moved into a house at GU29 0BP. The Freeview picture is poor, frequently breaking up on some channels. We live very near the Midhurst transmitter and I don't think that there is a hill in between.
However, the aerial in the loft is pointing North, towards Crystal Palace - even though your coverage map seems to indicate that Midhurst would be the obvious choice.

Will it just be up to trial and error in repositioning the aerial to point towards Midhurst, or do I need to obtain a different aerial etc

Your advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Alastair
