Earlier this week visited elderly relations in Clevedon. They are heavy users of FREEVIEW and are very nearly within sight of Mendip transmitter. They use new aerial. Despite frequent retunes on one TV and two Freeview boxes they have never had very good Freeview reception - fairly frequent picture drop outs on BBC and ITV channels and recently have lost Channel 11 and Sky News completely (No signal). Six months ago was informed that problems were because of low power transmissions on several MUXs but I believe this has now been rectified. Problems are exactly the same when old aerial used and cables interchanged. I see others are also having these problems - any advice please on what can be done ? We do not have these problems in Hampshire even though transmitter is further away and signals are weaker.
Thanks

Thanks for your helpful response of 16 April. Will try yet another bout of retuning when next in Clevedon.

Hello
I find the whole HD TV scenario confusing and I suspect many people do. I have a perfectly good TV system consisting of a plasma TV ( apparently HD ready) and a HUMAX FREEVIEW PVR. This was quite expensive but is reliable. When FREEVIEW introduced HD transmissions it appeared it was going to be an extra service. But recently I notice that at least one Freeview channel - Al Jazeera English - has moved to HD and no longer is available to those of use without HD equipment. I am assuming that this now going to happen with other main FREEVIEW channels ie the various BBC, ITV and Sky News channels thus effectively forcing viewers like myself to buy expensive new HD boxes and TV sets if we want to use FREEVIEW. In the computer industry backward-compatability is fairly common - ie much effort is put into ensuring that updated standards or systems do not instantly make users equipment useless. I wonder why the HD standards were not designed to allow older equipment to stll use the new transmissions (though obviously at lower definition).

Freeview reception in clevedon, Somerset.
in recent weeks picture on channels 10, 12, 14 has been at times unwatchable - picture breaking up. other channels are usually OK. have three aerials, one recently installed for digital changeover on roof, others in loft. same problems on all three aerials. some neighbours have similar problems.
are there issues with low power on mendip transmitter and some receivers ?
