Conor: Astra 1N is a satellite, which is intended to replace (for a while) the Astra 2D satellite, which is being decommissioned due to age.

Satellite transponders are just "transponders" in the sense that they take a signal sent from the Earth Station on the ground and relay it back, but they are not "for" anything. They can be used for SD, HD or 3D services, anything at all.

Almost all HD services are using the DVB-S2 signalling system, as this provides extra capacity for services, but cannot be seen by DVB-S receivers, so can't be used for SD services.

I would be interesting to hear Ofcom's wording about forcing UTV onto satellite in HD.

Aerialman : No, it can't, in the rest of the UK the multiplex has ITV+1 (or STV+1) and this has to be on the PSB2 multiplex as it requires the regional configuration.

There's details of this on the Freeview retune - poor public service transmitters deal | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice page.

Remember that the Freeview Light transmitters take an off-air feed from the main transmitter for the three multiplexes.

Long Mountain and Skriaig (Skye) are no longer a "main transmitter" in any meaningful sense as the commercial operators don't wish to transmit from them.

Tony Hill: If the BBC have a programme that is only 2.0 they will only transmit 2.0 sound, they won't create a pseudo-5.1 mix.

peter brown: ITV 3 is carried on multiplex A and ITV 4 on multiplex D, which you may not be able to get at the moment.

You might be able to get the channels after switchover, but you might also wish to consider Freesat as you are not predicted to be able reliably receive the full Freeview service after switchover.
