I would think there are two possible reasons.
The first is a source of Single frequency interference | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice close to the receiver with the missing channels; or
The reception levels are just low enough to spot the different sensitivity levels where the missing multiplex is "just below" the reception threshold.
I would, as always, start by suspecting the fly leads.

Brian: Yes, see "Comparison of analogue and digital signal levels" - pre-DSO is -17dB post-DSO is -7dB compared to analogue levels, that's 10dB.

donONE: It's probably worth pointing out that the TV Licence only pays for the BBC channels.
If you provide a postcode and perhaps a list of the channels you missing it might be possible to help.

David: Yes, I seem to introduce a bug into the system with the "comments cache" system. I have now fixed this so the correct "time ago" is added in later.

michael: To be honest, if you want "distant signals" there are 50,000 of them on things like "TuneIn Radio". TuneIn Radio - Android Market - much more choice than AM, perfect sound quality.

Ross Lucas-Young: You have not provided a postcode, so I can't speak specifically, but until digital switchover, the digital signal levels are low. At switchover, there will be high power signals from the Rowridge transmitter - and both horizontally and vertically.

Eddie Akers: Currently there is no local DAB multiplex for the FM, MW and LW radio broadcasting | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice station to go onto. There are places in place to sort this out, but it might be as early as 2012, or as late as 2015.
FM will, eventually, only be used for "community radio".
