Trevor Harris: Ofcom says that the improvement in computing power of the encoder, due to Moore's Law will allow a fifth channel into the Freeview HD multiplex in 2012. http://stakeholders.ofcom….pdf .

Trevor Harris: Sorry, wrong link, that the DRM document... The one you want is http://stakeholders.ofcom….pdf (see 5.2.2 2012 Scenario).
There is no consumer demand for 3D at the moment.

Martin: The top "800Mhz" (C61 to C69) are now allocated the 4G mobile communications.

It is not really possible to drop MPEG2 until all the existing devices out there can do MPEG4. There are about 10 million each of Freeview and Sky.

Trevor Harris: There are several problems with 3D, which the consumer electronic industry have yet to address, which was not the case with HD as "HD" production had been going on for years and there was piles of existing content that was in HD (ie, anything on film).

Perhaps one day there will be a way of watching stereoscopic television transmissions without having to wear a silly pair of glasses, until then it is not going to catch on with the vast majority of viewers.

Another problem is that for the 3D to work, the camera-work has to be very static, which means programmes have to be produced as a separate process for 3D. Watching a 2D version of a 3D broadcast is very uninteresting from a viewers point of view, and broadcasters can't really afford to produce in 2D and 3D.

emma: I think the "problems" are all related to the overnight switch of channels yesterday, I don't think there are any ongoing problems with transmission now.

Jerry: If you want more channels, you will need to use Freesat - see Compare Freeview Light and Freesat TV | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice - there will be no more multiplexes from the Weymouth transmitter.

H Yates: You don't need an amplifier, you need to move the aerial from the loft to the roof.

Nick: The Aldeburgh transmitter covers 9,500 homes.

ITV1 +1 has to go on multiplex 2/D3+4 because it is a service with regions. Only the D3+4 multiplex has this. ITV3 is contained on Multiplex A/SDN as it is a UK-wide channel.

Which two "naff channels" are you suggesting getting rid off?

The Broadcasting Act 1996 allocated 45% of multiplex 2 to the "Channel 3 licence holder" (that's ITV plc, STV or UTV), 45% to Channel 4 and the little bit left to the "national teletext licencee".

Ofcom has no power to force any changes on multiplex 2, other than to require the transmission of the licensed Channel 3 programme and Channel 4.
