Steve: You have not left a postcode so it is hard to be sure, but you may have too strong a signal for your receiver, but this less unlikely with a loft aerial.
Have you tried swapping your aerial cables around?

nick: Please remove the amplifier from your system. There is no fault with the transmitter - I'm sure the other 360,000 homes using it would have noticed.
