Greebo: As far as I understand it, there will only be one service in Manchester. The existing one will "cease" when the "new" one stats.

SES AND EUTELSAT UPDATE ON OPERATIONS AT 28.5° EAST - SES.com

Luxembourg, Paris, 4 October 2013 - Following the decision of the Arbitral Tribunal constituted under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce of Paris that concluded the first phase of arbitration in September 2013 and a preliminary injunction by the regional civil court of Bonn, SES (NYSE Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) and Eutelsat Communications (NYSE Euronext Paris: ETL) have collaborated in the best interest of customers to ensure a smooth transition of operations on frequencies at 28.5°E under a German filing.

As of October 4, SES is operating and Eutelsat has ceased operating on these frequencies. The transfer was successfully completed in the night of 3-4 October. SES and Eutelsat are in discussions to find a solution regarding the subject matter of the arbitration. -

Mark: the problem now is that without a date set, some people won't bother upgrading. As soon as a date is decided upon, millions more will change "because they have to". The doubters said there would be a "refuseniks ryno" for Freeview... It never happened.

Trevor Harris: of course you misrepresent what I said.

They are not saying they will close R4 FM with immediate effect.

But if they say "in two years time" then most people will have been warned enough to make them seek out a DAB radio in time.

Remember there will be two years of "on air" reminders.

What will happen is this.

The BBC will start replacing (ie, they continue on digital platforms) all the "on air trailers" for programmes on all radio networks with a message saying, in a network-suitable voice:

"UK national and local radio will not transmit on this analogue network after 2019. If you wish to listen to BBC radio, you must switch to a digital radio system: Freeview, online or DeeAyBee. For more information call the BBC action line on 0800 000000".

Two years of hearing that every half hour.... will get the message over.

Who would be mad enough to buy an FM-only radio then?

Trevor Harris: You must stop thinking that you are "everyman". What you specifically want is not the issue for the BBC, the government or industry.

You might make a lot of noise... but you are not a "typical user".

FM technology is so cheap it can be constructed from a few inexpensive components. You can get a TDA7088T for £3.39 - or a whole "retro radio kit" for a tenner. Conrad FM Self Build Retro Radio

So, it's not a shock it gets deployed in lots of places, even when people don't want it.

Your point that internet delivered radio seems attractive as many people have Wifi seems to play as a point FOR switching of FM sooner: this is an increase in the number listening to "digital radio", which is the criteria.

But DAB is still necessary: there are still going to be plenty of homes that will not be online (due to either age, network remoteness or ability to pay).

And, of course, DAB is more reliable in-car that Wifi or 3G/4G, as well as having considerable cost benefits for the user and efficiency for the distribution system.

Anyway, I'm pleased that you are finally accepting the need to shut down FM.
