M.Brown: When it's fixed...

David: No.

It means that the BBC will continue it's contract with SES Astra for the carriage of services on six of the satellite transponders.

The BBC provides Freesat and Sky with their EPG information.

Freesat charges a small admin fee (£2000) to get this tiny (in terms of capacity) information out to Freesat set-top boxes.

At the moment, Sky charges the BBC £12m a year for the listing of BBC programmes in Sky Guide.

Remember that British Sky Broadcasting does not own any satellite capacity. The capacity is owned by SES Astra, of Luxembourg.

Sky Subscriber Services Limited, wholly owned by British Sky Broadcasting plc operate the "Sky Guide". SSSL have - rather audaciously - claimed that it costs hundreds of millions of pounds to operate their EPG.

The same EPG for Freesat was set up for ten years with a couple of million quid...

Upgrading from Sky+HD to Freesat+HD

richard blunt: You need two connections to the dish if you want to record 2 programmes.

This is true for any piece of satellite equipment.

But you could fit a 8-output LNB ("oct-LNB") to the dish, in place of the quad-LNB you have?

David: I have updated the article to make the position clear.

Les Nicol: I agree!

I hope that this will allow the BBC to continue with all of their regional versions on satellite (there was talk of dumping some regions in DQF).

Also, I hope (as per the I've got an HD TV ... why can't we have high definition channels in place of the | High definition | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice page) that the BBC can split two HD BBC One digitally into SD regions for the duration of regional content.

ITV can put their £12 into providing local news - How do the new ITV local news regions compare with the BBC? | TV channels | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice .

And Channel 5 can get itself onto Freeview and Freesat in HD.

D jacobsen: According to Ofcom approves South Wales DAB extension : Radio Today :

"This move is part of a wider expansion of DAB digital radio coverage across Wales during the next year. New DAB digital transmitters are planned to be switched on over the next year bringing local DAB to an additional 400,000 homes and total local DAB coverage to almost 80%.

At the end of August, new digital transmitters are planned to be launched in South West Wales, adding a further 150,000 households in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire."

paul: If you use Freeview, it could be that your TV (or set top box) has lost its channel memory.

You might want to look to retune the TV (or box).

I did wonder if the transmitter was also out, but it reports "no problems". Radio & Television Service

MikeB: I agree.

I think 4Gsolver has rather got his wires crossed.

4Gsolver:

Just going to take issue with

"the devices that do not filter out the 4G 800MHz frequencies that are therfore (sic) not Freeview friendly"

No Freeview device will filter out C61-C69. Why? Because they were very specifically designed to operate on those frequencies.

Does that mean they won't work? No.

"RDR-HXD770, 790, 870, 890, 970, 995, 1070, and 1095. This list is not necessarily exhaustive. "

As per my comment above, unless you list every single Freeview box ever made, it won't be "exhaustive".

"1. Press and hold the power button which effectively reboots your device.
2. Disconnect the power supply for 30 seconds to flush out any memory resident erroneous data that has been captured.
3. Reconnect the power supply.
4. Switch your device on again. "

Not sure if (1) is true. It's not normally.

The CMOS memory in Freeview boxes will keep data for more than 30 seconds.

Doing (3) and (4) won't clear the effect of 4G.

"Long term solution:

Buy yourself a 4G filter from such places as Maplins or Argos to name but two. They are about £8 or so. "

Or, why not get one for FREE from the nice people at at800? One call to 0333 31 31 800 or 0808 13 13 800
will get you a FREE filter in tomorrow's post.

"The role of the 4G filter is to filter out unwanted 800MHz frequencies that cause your device to experience loss of Freeview. "

Ah, a true bit!

"Note: Certain transmitters have been undergoing a realignment in readiness for the 4G mobile network. "

But... the C61 and C62 clearance has little to do with the deployment of 4G services.

at800 | 4G Interference | 4G Filters | Let's be clear at 800 Mhz does indeed have lots of info.

But... please don't scare people. The 4G tests in London found that the service effected NO HOMES WHATSOEVER.

The tests in Brighton and York showed that COMMUNAL aerial systems had problems, but counted-them-on-the-fingers-of-one-hand other homes did.
