David Campbell: Yes, you can view free-to-air channels without a Sky HD subscription. Or indeed any subscription.

Rob: Until switch-over the coverage was never intended to be complete. It's not "a farce", but exactly as planned.

ian: A green-screen indicates a problem with HDCP. It means the TV (or other display device) does not correctly support HDCP.
You also sometimes see this is the resolution of the display is below that being provided by the equipment.
