Below are all of Anthony's postings, with the most recent are at the bottom of the page.I noticed some channels were off air from Winter Hill this morning - with the transmitter maintenance, there's been a pattern of turning off some of the channels at various periods then switching them back on, whatever that is.

I would like to correct your information : there was some transmitter maintenance yesterday on Winter Hill yesterday (it was indicated on DUK website), and possible weak signal warnings. There was break up on some services and the HD multiplex on ch 54 was also weak with no signal. This morning power on all services was restored.

I have another rule of thumb to add, if you want cinematic quality sound from HD channels, choose a piece of Freeview HD equipment that has the Dolby Digital Plus logo on it, the reason for this is that HE AAC sound (on certain programmes but not unfortunately ITV HD as they don't support full 5.1 surround sound transmission), is translated to full pukka proper Dolby Digital 5.1 surround audio which gives superb sound quality on suitable programming and envelops the user with realistic cinematic quality sound to go with those superb pictures.

Since the first retune on Winter Hill this year, it has had quite a desirable effect : the COM 7 and COM 8 multiplexes that I couldn't originally get on my existing aerial appeared magically with good levels of signal strength too!! I have a Panasonic Freeview HD recorder/ BluRay player combi and Panasonic Freeview HD Television and it seems they have quite sensitive tuners fitted.

A standard has been developed for terrestrial transmission of 4K UHD television channels called DVB-UHD, and provided we switch to DVB-T2 transmission for everything (which has far more bandwidth than conventional vanilla flavoured DVB-T) there is a chance it could be done temporarily until such time as a further switch can be done to DVB-UHD transmission format.. A switch to the new DVB-UHD standard which would have even more bandwidth to cope, would be even better for carrying them.

I watch as much as I can in HD because the quality is so much better than many SD channels, and on BBC services and Channel 4 services, you get 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound on certain programmes which I feed to a 2nd hand LG home cinema speaker system that is equipped Dolby Digital / DTS /and Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound built in.
The picture is infinitely far better than SD channels, and the sound is a big improvement on the awful flat lifeless built in flat screen TV speakers.

Hello. Has TWR UK disappeared from Freeview? My LG smart TV suddenly came up with a message today saying the channel list had changed and persuaded me to perform an autotune which I naturally did. When I checked all my TV and radio channels, indeed TWR UK had disappeared. I even tried manual tuning and plugging in the Winter Hill transmitter channel numbers manually and same result, TWR-UK had disappeared. I am getting pretty good signal strength 95% and signal quality 98% so there's no problem there. Perhaps the radio station no longer sees it as viable to broadcast on Freeview anymore, who knows...

I've had a brand new Labgear triple element wideband aerial installed and reception is excellent on all the channels. Channel 55 MUX is just slightly less at 50% signal strength and 100% signal quality but is adequate for the DVB-T2 tuner on my LG Freeview HD / Freesat HD tv and pick up without problems. Channel is always slightly trickier to get right due to the slightly lower signal level transmitted on this MUX but it is being received at the very least.

I was watching ITV news at ten on itv+1 and around 23.15 through a report, the signal went of for 3-4 minutes, I checked my TV's signal strength meter and channel 34 and 35 muxes were both down for that 3-4 minutes but the other multiplexes were fine, all the main ones had 94% signal strength and 100% signal quality and channel 55 multiplex signal strength 42% / signal quality 100%. My TV is an LG 47in Freeview HD / Free To Air HD Satellite model no 47LB585V-ZM. I receive Winter Hill transmitter via high quality low loss screened coax cable hooked up to a Maxview triple element wideband TV aerial at BB5 2EH. I have checked to see if there's any maintenance scheduled and there is none. I wonder what caused 34 and 35 to briefly go down then return a few minutes later? Only Channels 34 and 35 were briefly affected, the others were fine with maximum strength and quality.

Why do they carry out Winter Hill Engineering at weekends when most people are watching? It's absolutely ANNOYING.
