A wideband high gain aerial of at least 32 or 48 elements should ensure max signal reception.

MikeP: I use a 48 element wideband high gain aerial in accrington lancashire horizontally polarised for full freeview hd reception from Winter Hill tx near bolton and I get ALL freeview sd and hd services without a problem and consistently GOOD quality reception with high signal strength and high quality levels. The further away from the transmitter you are the better the aerial you need;also what you conveniently ignoring and forgetting is that some winter hill viewers in north east lancashire need such good aerials and cabling jobs because there is a wind farm near oswaldtwistle over the tops which is causing reception problems, in that case a log periodic aerial horizontally polarized to winter hill would not solve this effectively at all.

Group aerials are no good in todays freeview environment-especially if they have been up on a roof for years and/or are old corroded or knackered, ageing rusty corroded bent twisted or knackered aerials will not pick up all the Freeview channels as a good quality log periodic aerial installation or good quality wideband high gain aerial installation, condition of aerials and cabling can make all the difference between getting something, getting breaking up pixellating tv services or getting nothing at all.

Alan B: BBC Four HD is on channel 31 with other HD channels-it's incredibly difficult to receive if you don't have a good aerial and cabling set-up. It's transmitted at a pathetically low power of 24kW erp which means only 70% of viewers in NW England can get it while a remaining 30% don't get it.

C Kennedy-you'll need at least a 2m dish to get as many services as you can;signal strengths will vary on the Astra 2 UK spotbeam channels but you will get a lot of the Astra 2 pan-european beam free to air services down there in Innsbruck on a 2mtr dish antenna aligned with 28.2degE.

My ITV/C4 Freeview channels have disappeared - what can I do? Monday 8 September 2014 10:35PM

Ellen : Unless you are within good line of sight of a TV transmitter, an indoor aerial can be hopeless at picking up digital TV services (unless you buy one that has a built in booster powered by the TV aerial socket), and it also can pick up interference from electrical switches and appliances causing break up pops squeaks and pixellation etc and also go bad when people move within the room. Try retuning and if you still have no luck, the only solution is a properly installed roof or loft aerial with a masthead amplifier to boost the signals into your Freeview TV.

Chris-once you've watched BBC Four HD you'll never go back because the picture quality is pinsharp and the sound is infinately clearer, with the added bonus of 5.1 surround on certain programes i.e. films and some excellent european dramas shot in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. It's an audio visual delight put simply.

Also Chris BBC Four HD is transmitted at much lower power than regular SD channels to squeeze an extra multiplex into the Freeview line up hence why a good number of viewers don't get it;a log periodic aerial of high gain wideband aerial set up well with good cabling should pull it in. It is well worth the extra effort if you can be bothered.

John Sturdy: Only a freesat box NOT freeview box will work with the 60cm dish on your wall. If your set has Freesat built in only THEN will it work with the dish.

In car DAB is pathetic;reception is pants, quality is pathetic and many music stations are only in mono sound. DRM and DRM+ is better on mw lw sw and fm as it covers much larger areas than dab with fewer transmitters needed bigger homogenous coverage and more robust reception and near fm quality on am bands with stereo and cd quality stereo too. Ofcom the bbc and commercial stations and radio manufacturers are stupid in sticking with DAB and its poor relation dabplus. If I were in govt I would go for drm on am bands and drm+ on fm bands and push radio manufacturers and broadcasters to it;current trials have worked well within europe the uk and worldwide so whats stopping the UK from taking it on?
