Sarah C: You are predicted to have good reception from both Anglia (Sudbury/Rouncefall) and Meridian (Bluebell Hill), plus variable reception from London (C/P) possible at all times, dependent on where the aerial is pointing. The appearance of Anglia (on button 3?) suggests that an automatic rescan took place, or another channel was found which was accepted. Meridian should now be in the 800s of the channel list. This situation will remain until another retune takes place, at which time if Anglia is above the threshold for reception the same storage sequence could be repeated as Sudbury on C41 is found before Bluebell Hill on C43. If possible do a manual tune of the Bluebell hill frequencies, after clearing the channel list, to restore the correct set of channels.

Maggie: An aerial which gave good reception from Crystal Palace (or Bluebell Hill, for that matter) should give good reception on Freeview. Could you give more details about the TV, such as make and model to check if it is suitable for reception of post switchover digital signals.

Adam Whitehouse: The smaller relay transmitters are public service transmitters and are provided at considerable cost (relative to the number of viewers served) for the supply of BBC channels plus ITV1, C4 and C5 which are the commercially funded public service channels. The extra channels on mux D3+4 are a bonus provided using spare capacity on the mux. The owners of the COM muxes were invited to extend coverage to other sites at switchover, but declined due to the extra cost. Ofcom only required that coverage for the COM muxes would be at least as good after switchover as had been provided on the original low power transmitters.

Kevin James: It is worth noting that the original analogue transmitters at Dover used to be at 100kW. The power necessary to give the same coverage with the current Freeview transmitters would usually be 20kW, so the COM muxes have double this and the PSB muxes four times the normal power in order to reinforce the signal in the face of possible interference from the continent on those occasions that the inversion effect is experienced. If C48 is the the only frequency giving problems it is possible that slight repositioning of the aerial could effect an improvement to the signal being received on that mux.

Jason: It is possible that the current COM muxes might use the plan for COM 7,8,9, at least in part, if the plan to extend the 4G frequencies down to C49 goes ahead. There are a number of suggestions put forward by Arquiva to facilitate clearance of additional frequencies. This varies from only having the PSB muxes on Freeview (a course already taken by Belgium); allocating the COMs to C31 to C37 with additional use of C48 and C28, or using C22, C25, C28 at all/most the full Freeview transmitters as a SFN, which would allow C31-C37 to be auctioned off for additional Freeview services. The problem with the last plan, apart from needing agreement with other countries who could be affected at times of inversion, is the necessity to re-engineer the PSB muxes at a number of sites. The plans also need DVB-T2 transmission to be adopted in order to put the SFNs in place. At the present time suitable receivers are in the minority but it is suggested that using DVB-T2 might be necessary "sooner, rather than later"

Tracy Gill: Have you ever tried to receive a signal from Stockland Hill? S/H is SW of your location, would that avoid the trees? You would get the wrong regional news, of course, but that would be better than no BBC channels at all.

Kevin Finn: No, this channel is only available on muxes carrying BBC Scotland, ie all Freeview transmitters in Scotland plus Caldbeck. The service is available throughout the UK and some other parts of Europe via satellite.

Louise West: Checking the BBC status report for DAB transmitters shows that the BBC national multiplex from the Crabwood Farm/Winchester transmitter is currently off air - since 05.31 today.

Nick A: Check whether changing the position of the connecting leads relative to the box and TV makes any difference to the signal quality, as sometimes there is interaction between them.
