Hi Brian

Sure this has been mentioned before but . . .

Can someone please get Freeview to rejig the Channel Numbers for HD when BBC2 HD starts so that my ageing mother doesn't continue to get confused !
51=BBC1 HD
52=BBC2 HD
53=ITV1 HD
54=Channel4 HD

Current numbering is just daft
50=1
51=3
52=4
54=2/7/9/HD

Hi Brian,

Off Topic and on the subject of 5.1 on BBC HD as mentioned by Tony Hill and replied to by you earlier

"Tony Hill: The BBC only transmit programmes that have 5.1 sound with 5.1 sound, using 2.0 for everything else.
...
The BBC does not believe that the consumer is well served by making a pseudo-5.1 mix."

I noticed the other day that during the HD Chanel Preview Loop there was a section of "Top Gear" in 5.1
I happened to have that episode recorded and checked back to find it was in 2.0 as I recalled ! So either BBC are pseudo-5.1 mixing for the loop or they are downmixing for the broadcast !

Also "Later ... With Jools H" is being broadcast in 5.1 while "Later Live ... With Jools H" is in 2.0
Immediately following the 2.0 "Live" edition was an HD Channel Promo
'Lovingly Crafted For High Definition' : "How does Surround Sound affect Later With Jools Holland in High Definition ?"

Hmmm

Hi Brian

My observations are from Freeview. They are probably legally OK as they say

"How does Surround Sound affect Later With Jools Holland in High Definition ?"

and the 2.0 programme is of course differently titled as "Later Live ..." it is however misleading to follow the 2.0 program with this promo (in my opinion!)

The Preview Loop is 5.1 on Freeview via my system as we type . . .

Keep up the good work.

Hi Brian,

For HD Audio Freeview uses HE-AAC (5.1/2.0) and provides AD within the encoding when required. It is up to the Receiver/PVR to transcode HE-AAC to DD for output although not all machines released to market before April 2011 do so as this transcoding was not mandated until that date. Some still only output downmixed LPCM.

Hi Brian,

UK Digital TV Reciever Recommendations Version 1.5 stated "should" transcode. This was changed in V1.7 May 2010 to "shall" transcode.

The first boxes released in May 2010 did not transcode the HE-AAC stream. Some manufacturers did not know that the stream was not being broadcast with AC-3 audio as had been supplied to them for pre-launch testing. No PVR boxes had transcoding at launch. The DigitalStream box added transcoding via a firmware update in June 2010. The Humax launched in August 2010 with transcoding built in. Other boxes have slowly added transcoding over an extended period.

Whatever the guidelines state now the testing and certification process for boxes before Jan 2011 did not require transcoding. D-Book 6.2.1 came into force in April 2011 and boxes released after that date certainly have to have transcoding.

More information on the 5.1 debacle and Freeview HD equipment can be found . . .
