Briantist:

I have tried recording from Film4+1. It records a certain amount of what I want to record, sometimes it's viewable and sometimes not, then it records the rest on Film4, which I'm unable to view because of the problem that I've mentioned. I'm wondering if I need to upgrade to a newer box.

Paul: A new box would certainly sort the problem out. Which device do you have at the moment?

Briantist:

I have a Techwood AEDTR80S7. It's a few years old.

Would a new recorder have an EPG that is compatible with the changes to PSB2?
Or would it be more recommendable to simply buy a recorder that doesn't have built in Freeview channels?

Many thanks for your help, by the way.

Paul

Paul: Your old box might work if you did a total reset on it.

If you don't get a recorder with built in Freeview, it's not going to be able to record anything at all!

I have a £5-a-month BT YouView box - it records Freeview/Freeview HD perfectly well, including Film4.

If you've had problems I would make sure the retailer offers a "no quibble" return on anything you buy.

If the tv has freeview, would a recorder then record. Even if it didn't have Freeview built in.

Thanks again,

Paul.

Paul: The recorder and the TV have seperate tuners - so that you can record whilst watching another programme etc. Think of them as to different boxes, but one plugs into the other.

Since I've never even heard of Techwood and a google brought up very little info, it looks like tech support is unlikely. If Brianist's solution does not work, then a very decent PVR can be yours for around £150. The one we recommend at work is generally Humax (the BT Youview box is a version of their Youview recorder), and the latest 2000 model (with twin Freeview HD tuners, 500gb hard drive and the capacity to get Iplayer) is about £169. It has both HDMI and scart/RCA connections, so its very flexible.

Paul: Sorry, the HUmax 2000 is £179.95, the Panasonic PVR is £169.95 (although the 500gb seems a little thin on the ground).

Cheers Mike.

I'm not surprised that there isn't much info on the Techwood model that I have, it's pretty old by today's standards. When the machine itself can't find software to upgrade itself, the model is probably obsolete.

My rule of thumb is, when it gets to the point that you have get out and push then it's definitely time to start looking for another recorder.

I'll definitely take a look at the Humax.

Thanks again.

Paul: The chassis used in the Techwood AEDTR80S7 are manufactured by a Turkish company called Vestel who also supply virtually the same chassis to a large number of other well known brand names, e.g: Hitachi, Wharfedale, Goodmans, Alba, Digiholme etc to name but a few.

Since those chassis were first released in 2007 they have undergone a series of software updates and with V13 being the final "over air" download back in 2010, this being released in an attempt to cure a notorious stuttering, jumping problem that affected playback of previous recordings on a number of models.

However, as it appears that you have not reported any problems with playback other than with Film4 I was curious as to what version of software is installed in your box? this being revealed by pressing - menu / set up / configuration, receiver upgrade indicating the number required.

The other aspect I wondered about being, does this blank screen on playback issue also apply if you carry out an "instant record" at the start of a programme? also if you wish to "view" Film4 from say ITV3 rather than inching up the channels one at a time from 10 does pressing button1 then 5 result in Film4 being seen?

My only reason for enquiring being that I coupled up (then rescanned) an old Hitachi PVR I have that uses the same chassis as your Techwood and it recorded / played back Film4 OK, that is with the exception of the stuttering problem previously referred to simply because of me not (as yet) having installed the V13 software update that I downloaded last year from the website.

By the way, I do realise you are considering having a look at the Humax range as suggested by MikeB and which is a good idea!, albeit that although Humax manufactures a range of good quality reliable devices they unfortunately all lack the sheer user friendliness of the menu system used in the Vestel range of PVR's.

jb38: There is a jumping problem on playback, not always, but enough to that I've noticed it.

I definitely don't have V13. I recently tried to upgrade the software through the menus that you've mentioned, but it only gets a short way and then never completes the search.

When recording it doesn't matter how the recording is done the result is still a blank screen, no sound and the recording fast forwards to the end.

I can change channels by using the number keys; I've not had any problem at all with channel changing.

It's a bit of a strange problem. I can record Film4+1 but only half way and then again sometimes not at all, and I then lose the second half as the recorder for some reason records the second half on Film4.

I did wonder at one point if the machine was on its way out as I regularly have to unplug to reset it after the controls seize up.
