From Wikipedia: The channel's annual budget for 2011/12 is 1,166.6 million.3 Along with the BBC's other domestic television stations, and many European broadcasters and some in Asia, it is funded principally by the television licence fee, and therefore shows uninterrupted programming with no commercial advertising at any time. It is currently the most watched television channel in the United Kingdom, ahead of its traditional rival for ratings leadership, ITV1. This system used a vertically-scanned image of 30 lines just enough resolution for a close-up of one person, and with a bandwidth low enough to use existing radio transmitters. - en.wikipedia.org read more about BBC One HD on wikipedia (summary by Clipped).

All BBC One HD regions have now launched on Freesat and the final region (South East) will be completed on Sky tomorrow. By tomorrow all Sky and Freesat viewers with a HD receiver should see their local BBC One HD region on 101. Viewers using an SD box will receive the BBC One Nightlight service with no regional news until April 2024, by which time they will need to upgrade to a HD receiver to continue receiving BBC channels via satellite.

The BBC have today completed the rollout of the final batch of BBC One HD regions on Freeview. This means that all DVB-T2/HD TVs/boxes/PVRs should now receive the correct version of BBC One HD (the same region as that received for BBC One SD) which replaces the England-wide version of BBC One HD on LCN 101.

Did your region mention now being able to watch in HD at the start of the programme?
Mine didn't, what a joke!

I should have said the Regional News to be explicit!

Chris.SE: I've been out all day the last couple of days and haven't watched any TV news. Freeview is the final platform to have the rollout of BBC One HD regions completed, they've all been available on satellite and cable for some time now, so it's not as if this is the first time that any particular region has been available in HD.

Well of course, that doesn't detract from my point though. I'd say that the majority of viewers use Freeview, so lack of any comment was surprising.

Since 7th July, BBC One HD and BBC Two HD are being swapped to LCNs 1 and 2 on newer compatible Freeview Play TVs. This functionality is only activated when the TV is connected to the internet enabling the enhanced EPG listing features. The HD swap has been enabled for BBC Three, BBC Four, CBBC and CBeebies for some time.
See the link below for the full announcement and a list of compatible TV models:

I expect we knew you meant 7th June - don't wish summer away so quickly!!
Even if people don't have one of the latest compatible TV Models for this automatic swap, a number of sets have the ability in their programme management menus to move channels around to your own chosen LCNs. Some may only allow it by using "Favourites" which may be a more tedious way of doing things.
I've already swapped my HD channels apart from ITV1 as they haven't yet regionalised, although I didn't keep a duplicate HD version in 10x. I also moved my SD versions to the 900s, rather than the 600s which can sometimes get used for other things.
