BBC - 60 new DAB transmitters in 2011
The BBC Trust's Public Purpose Remits require that the BBC will improve DAB coverage, to meet the requirements of the Digital Economy Act and other expectations.
To improve the national coverage by five percentage points will require the provision of 60 new DAB transmitter sites.
It should be noted that there are diminishing returns for these new transmitter sites - a large number of smaller transmitters are required to fill in the coverage gaps.

i live in sherborne, dorset near yeovil. this area is very badly served by DAB and reception of even the basic station line up is virtually non existant.
are there any plans to fill this reception gap. So far DAB has been a rerallet down, i hope to be convinced differently.

Des Collier: BBC Local radio is carried on the commercial radio multiplex. If and when you get that, yes.

Response to Alan Mapp:
I'm surprised by your comments. A couple of years ago I went to to stay with relatives in Sherborne, and took a DAB radio with me. Using it's own thin wire aerial, I received about 2 dozen stations, more than we got here in Northampton, with very stable reception. I suppose it depends where you live in the town, but I would have thought an external aerial would have pulled in a decent signal. I was at the top near the Bradford Abbas road.

Is there any reason why Radio Lancashire on DAB should be a weaker signal than it used to be?
I could only receive it in one room in the house but now it has gone altogether. All other DAB stations are there, it's just the local one that has gone AWOL.

Joe: BBC Local Radio is carried on the local commercial multiplex. Usually this is from a different transmitter from the national services.

When can we expect the quality of reception for BBC stations of our bedside DAB radio (Sony Dream Machine) to improve? Currently it is almost non-existent. We are elderly and rely a lot on our radio when we go to bed. Currently we can receive most of the National BBC stations on FM (not Radio Newcastle which we dearly like to listen to) but what happens when the analogue switch off occurs? Our Post Code is SR7 7WH
