BBC - 60 new DAB transmitters in 2011

The BBC will improve national DAB coverage from the current 87% of the population to 92% in the next twelve months.

The BBC Trust's Public Purpose Remits require that the BBC will improve DAB coverage, to meet the requirements of the Digital Economy Act and other expectations.

To improve the national coverage by five percentage points will require the provision of 60 new DAB transmitter sites.

It should be noted that there are diminishing returns for these new transmitter sites - a large number of smaller transmitters are required to fill in the coverage gaps.

Hello,
Your website is a font of information for tv and radio reception - I only wish there were sites exactly like this for reception in other countries! Keep up the great work.
My question relates to DAB reception in Epsom, Surrey. According to your DAB maps I am on the fringe of the Berkshire & North Hampshire Hemdean transmitter (980W) as well as the Kent Bluebell Hill (1200W) transmitter and as luck would have it, on an almost 180° line between the two. I have ordered a 5 element DAB antenna; would it be more advantageous to point it towards the 'weaker' Hemdean & could Bluebell Hill be received from the back of the aerial at the same time? The London multiplexes notwithstanding, the Berkshire & North Hampshire multiplex would be the preferred multiplex to receive.
What do you think about off-direction reception of the extreme fringe Essex Benfleet 12D transmitter? (50.3399,-4.7611)

@Theflyingdodo

The Berkshire & North Hampshire multiplex will be extended to East Berkshire within the next few years, which should improve reception in Epsom but will probably knock out reception of other 12D multiplexes e.g. Essex.

The additional sites will be at Coppid Beach, Windsor Castle & Maidenhead.

There will also be a Surrey multiplex within the next couple of years.

DAB seems like an excellent service in places like LONDON, MANCHESTER , LEEDS and BRISTOL.
however here in the west dorset south somerset area ( yeovil and sherborne ) DAB reception is awful. A DAB radio on an upstairs west facing windowledge just about works, guess what - i sold it. Now bought an internet radio as i have given up totally on DAB

@ alan mapp

When did you last try DAB in Yeovil?

The BBC opened a new transmitter at Coker Hill on 16 December 2011 (and another at Shaftesbury on 4th May 2012).

Celia Leach: This suggests that you are only likely to receive the BBC national stations and the commercial national stations (D1 National):

In Your Area | What's On | Get Digital Radio

There is a "Norwich" multiplex which parts of Norfolk (not just Norwich) but it's doubtful that it will be available to you. This multiplex doesn't broadcast from Tacolneston, whereas BBC National and D1 National do.

Refer to the coverage map on page 6 (the projection for good indoor service under normal conditions):

http://www.ofcom.org.uk/s….pdf

Coverage maps can never be totally accurate. Objects can affect the signal including other buildings that are in the way.

BBC Radio Lancashire's signal has gone very weak on VHF/FM? Can't pick up the station in Rhyl at all well. I can pick up BBC Radio Manchester well, and even BBC Radio Leeds. BBC Radio 1,2,3,4, are very strong signals. Slight hiss pn Radio 3.
