My dad has just given me his old Sky+ box as he has upgraded to SkyHD and I want to use it to get all the freeview stuff. My question is do I need to have a freesat card to get these or do i just need to get a dish and plug the +box in?

Neil: You can use it OK, but only as a simple basic box, as you will not be able to record anything without a subscription being in force.
Cards are only required to view certain channels such as 5* (star) and similar, this also applying to some ITV regions who use encryption on their programmes, as if you want to view any of these then a "Free to view" card will be required from Sky @ £25.00.

Thank you Briantist for your response. I was going to invest in an HD PVR anyway, and as Humax still have problems with Freeview (including failure of my box to down load the software update that was claimed to be available), I will switch to Freesat. But I wonder why a number of Freesat boxes needed downloadable updates on the digital switchover? Surely Freesat should have not have been affected by this?

David Newton: I would suspect the Freesat downloads are just a coincidence.

I run two separate satelite boxes, a Grundig, and a Philex, in two separate rooms. Recently the Grundig has shown "No video signal" on Ch5, while the Philex shows the same for ITV and Ch5. I have rescanned the Grundig without any success. Signal strength is at 85%, any advice would be welcolmed.

Dave Tattum: Could you please indicate the model numbers of the boxes concerned, as if you had only mentioned problems with the model that's notorious for this (and other) type of problem, namely the Grundig, the fact of you stating the Philex shows likewise is a bit strange.
When you said you re-scanned the Grundig did you do this after you had carried out a factory reset on it, preferably by having preceded this action by leaving it unpowered for 3 or 4 minutes beforehand.
