Why do we receive so few channels from this transmitter, with no plans to upgrade our service, when people living 3 miles away can get upto 100 channels and only have the same equipement as us and pay the same license fee. If I rotate my aerial to cover Southern Ireland over 60 miles away I can get many more great if I understood gaelic, but am limited to 15 or so from the mast 300 yards up my road, a few of which are duplicate channels.

Adam Whitehouse: The Commercial multiplexes do not have as wide a coverage as the Public Service ones. They decide where to site their transmitters and have done so at 81 of the largest (by viewer population). This gives them a coverage of 90% of the population. For them to broadcast from the 1,000 or so small relays including Deiniolen, would double their cost of transmission whilst only adding 8.5% of the population to their potential viewer base.
They make money by showing advertising to as many viewers as possible which they aquire at lowest possible cost. They have no "Public Service" obligation". It is not surprising that they don't consider the relays worthwhile.
The Licence fee goes to the BBC which is a Public Service Broadcaster. I do not agree with any suggestion that it should receive less from viewers which the Commercial broadcasters don't wish to serve. In such cases, with less to choose from, there may be more reliance on the BBC.

Adam Whitehouse: The smaller relay transmitters are public service transmitters and are provided at considerable cost (relative to the number of viewers served) for the supply of BBC channels plus ITV1, C4 and C5 which are the commercially funded public service channels. The extra channels on mux D3+4 are a bonus provided using spare capacity on the mux. The owners of the COM muxes were invited to extend coverage to other sites at switchover, but declined due to the extra cost. Ofcom only required that coverage for the COM muxes would be at least as good after switchover as had been provided on the original low power transmitters.

Adam Whitehouse: I should, of course, have included S4C in the list of public service channels for Wales.
