David Mansell: Maybe they are just doing some important maintenance work to the transmitter hence the frequent service cut outs. If it is really annoying you, remember you could get Freesat, where you will also have a choice over which regional news program you want to receive!

I have no desire to use Freesat. It should not be beyond the wit of man to engineer a reliable terrestrial transmitter. I can, in fact , watch any BBC local news I want by changing my notional location on the BBC I-Player via Youview, which also has internet -based channels like Eurosport and BT Sport. It's just that it's a bit more awkward to use than normal TV.

David Mansell:

There is essentiual engineering work being carried out on the Todmorden transmitters. The equipment used is very reliable but does need regular maintenance, just like your car. They also need to add facilities and to do that they either reduce the power output or turn it off altogether for a short while - in the interests of the health of the engineers doing the work.

David Mansell: I'm not sure why you have 'no desire' to watch Freesat considering you seem a bit upset of the reliability of your incoming signal at the moment. What's your dislike for Freesat?

Mike P, how do you know that maintenance is being carried out. According to Digital UK the only maintenance currently being carried out in the Yorkshire TV area is in Grimsby (which is not in Yorkshire) which is close to where I come from but not where I live now.
Harry, I don't see why I should have to buy a satellite dish to receive a decent signal.

David Mansell: Firstly, put your postcode into the site (or just put in it when commenting) so we can see if you are supposed to get a decent Freeview signal. Remember it is beyond the wit of man to be able to get a TV signal through a hill, so it there is one between you and the transmitter, then geography and physics trumps your desire to just watch Freeview.

Next, if you are supposed to get a decent signal, check your equipment. Loads of people complain that they are getting a lousy signal, etc. And loads of them insist that their system is perfect, put in by experts, etc. But a frayed wire, or water getting into a single joint will cause problems. Transmitters seldom go down, and 'low' power is normally very much a temporray thing - most problems are to do with the system in the home, not anywhere else.

If your prone to get a rubbish signal, and you tried your best to get Freeview - give up. Einstein's adage about 'doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result' is true - if its not going to happen, your just wasting time and money. Freesat works fine (my parent-in-law have it as well as Freeview), and it actually has certain advantages. You can even put up the dish yourself.

David Mansell:

If you look above your and my posting for an entry timed at 11.32 on Monday, you will see a posting about engineering work at Todmorden transmitter. Before that, an 08.32 entry also states there is work. Further, another entry today at 08.32 again states there was a problem between 17.49 and 17.55 on Monday!

That's how we know there is work beimng done. The information comes from the organisation responsible for the maintenance. DigitalUK get their information later so may not be aware yet of the work.

Mike P,
There is nothing wrong with my equipment. My problems with the signal have coincided with downtime at the transmitter. I get the same sort of response from Digital UK pointing the finger at me when it's actually transmitter problems.
As I said I had absolutely no problem with HD but strange blips on SD and then the situation reversed, so it's a transmitter problem not a reception problem. My postcode is OL14 5EL

David Mansell: You can't simply assume that there is a transmitter problem, or that its due to transmitter maintainance. Admittedly, the transmitter only puts out 100w tops, and obviously during any maintanence that might be much reduced, but your are only 2km from the transmitter - which means than you might be able to get a perfectly good signal with nothing more than a set top aerial, if that! So if the problem occurs when there is no maintainence, etc, logically, it has to be at your end.

I'd check the muxes for signal strength - too high might be the problem - your just so close. If they are low, then there has to be something very wrong with your system.

Considering the very limited jumber of channels you get from that transmitter, and the small chance of getting any more from another transmitter, Freesat is the obvious way to go.

David Mansell: There are plenty other transmitters in the area namely Cornholme, Walsden.
If you decide to re align your aerial, to another transmitter, according to Digital UK and this website, Cornholme is a viable option that should give you virtually perfect signal strength. Cornholme receives its signals direct from Emley Moor and hasn't had the same amount of 'downtime' that Todmorden transmitter has had. Cornholme transmitter is definitely an option.Walsden is also an option, you will get a fine signal but probably won't make any difference because Walsden simply relays Todmorden.According to Digital UK, it shows that you will get a signal on nearly all MUX's, average signal 50-60%. Maybe you could try that transmitter (even though its through the Pennines with no line of sight!) and see what happens? A very high gain aerial may do the trick ... then again if you were going to do that I'd say Freesat is the most simpler option
