Well, it's been some time but here is an update. After many visits to my Neighbours house virginmedia stating that nothing was wrong with the kit i complained myself directly to Virginmedia.
They contacted me directly and made an appointment with next door and they were hoping to move the wi fi box to another room in the house, I had explained the issue in depth in the complaint made and they did not question the prognosis.
However they have now visited next door and they do not want to move there wi fi box (no understanding why really unless it plugs into the tivo box, i have no idea). He has changed the router for one on another channel and i will have a look tonight, however i am sure the issue will still be there if the box has not been moved.
Will keep you up to date.

Well, update, next door now have a new super hub 2 and new power supply and my problem has now gone. Virgin media were really good once i got hold of the principal engineer for Oxford. They have also made an appointment with me to upgrade my own Wi fi box to superhub 2 for all the trouble.

Rob: I am really pleased to see that your problem has finally been rectified by the elimination of a localised source of interference, this rather backing up the results of the previous tests you carried out suggesting that the problem just had to be caused by something located close to your TV.
I will say though that I still feel that the problem was really down to a combination of a Wi-Fi device with a somewhat higher level of spurious emissions than would be experienced from an alternative brand of device coupled to the offending device being used in relatively close proximity to a TV with a less than ideal level of rejection to sources of interference, this being irrespective of whether its picked up via the TV's aerial input or alternatively direct injection into its PCB circuitry, however the main thing is that your problem has now finally been nailed once and for all.
Many thanks for the numerous updates given on the situation, this possibly being helpful to others that may have the misfortune of experiencing similar problems to yourself at some point in time.

Can I just echo JB38's comment above, Rob? Well, done for sticking at it, well done for diagnosing the cause of the problem and above all well done for badgering Virgin Media until they actually sorted out the problem caused by their equipment. It's all too easy these days to be fobbed off with 'technical' explanations from companies who use the "the-equipment-is-fine-so-it's-not-our-problem" gambit and leave those with less technological know-how to try and sort out problems themselves - usually at great expense.
I hope, if anyone else is in the same situation, that they read all the posts and suggestions on here and reach a quicker solution to their problems. Me? I would have stripped the wall and shielded it with aluminium foil about a month ago... :)

Very pleased that your efforts have resolved the problems. Glad those of us contributing to this site have been able to give you enough clues to get it sorted out at last.
The experience does show that not all problems are due to either transmitter faults or your own equipment so the process of investigation and elimination can be lengthy. It's often quite difficult to work out what might be happening when we are at some remote point and can't see for ourselves. Your descriptions clearly helped.

Alan Stringer: I note that PSB2 is on UHF channel 60 which means it's the closest to the 800MHz spectrum allocated to 4G mobile operators. Enquire as to whether such a service has come on air at your locality. at800 is the organisation formed by the mobile operators and may send you a filter if it's suspected to be the cause.

My Post seems not to have appeared so I'm re-posting
I now have a Freeview HD box and an HD PC tuner, I've tuned both in to the Oxford transmitter and can receive the main HD channels but I cannot get BBC4 HD or anything else on C31 on either.
My signal strength for the SD channels and the HD ones I can receive is good and I have tried a manual tune for this channel.
Any ideas?

Is anyone getting reception problems this evening, with the foggy conditions? I cannot get BBC1 and BBC2. ITV1, Ch4 and Ch5 are OK at the moment. I am in Swindon (SN3).
