What you are seeing is one of the two problems that are well know about the "MPEG-2" system that is used to encode digital TV.
Because of the way the system works, horizontal movement across a crowd requires a disproportionate large amount of data to encode.
Because the bandwidth on Freeview is so limited, and as most broadcasters have decided to have more channels rather than better quality pictures, on most channels the bandwidth is so limited that the effect you see, a blurry mass of blocks is visible.
The sceptical will say that this is simply an excuse to sell you HDTV equipment and channel packages.
The other problem you will see is when strobe effects are used - this will often look like very large black and white boxes.
If these effects trouble you, do not go out and buy yourself a massive TV as they will be simply much clearer to you.

I have suddenly lost the centre channel on BBC 1 HD only.
ITV1 HD is OK and BBC1 freesat OK.
Any ideas Brian.

David Haworth: I would revert to stereo mode for the moment.

Hi Brian - the display on the A/V receiver is suddenly showing Dolby Digital on BBC1 HD and Dolby PL11 everwhere else. Is there a problem?

David Haworth: I presume this is on Sky/Freesat?
"Pro Logic II" is when you have a stereo signal and transform it to 5.1, it isn't "real" 5.1.
Dolby - What is Dolby Pro Logic II?
.
You would normally select this yourself, rather than stereo, as it has no carrier component to detect.

But it has not happened before - just today and all other channels are broadcasting OK on the centre channel- only BBC1 HD. Even The BBC HD channel 109 is OK as is BBC1 101
Its like listening with a hole in the middle.
Yes it is Freesat HD

David Haworth: I would expect that it's a fault. If you switch your system to "stereo" from PLII you should be OK until they fix it.
