I don't want to use a satellite box I have a freeview box. I want to know if an existing dish for sky can be use with the freeview box.Can I use a cable splitter and run one end to the sky box the the other to a freeview box and get the freeview channels.
You cannot use a Freeview receiver with a satellite dish, only an aerial.
You also cannot split a satellite signal from a dish, if you want to run more than one box you must use a dual- or quad-LNB on the satellite dish and have a cable to each satellite receiver.

Gerry: The term RF cable is just really referring to a coax type cable such as a jumper lead from an aerial wall socket to a TV or boxes aerial input socket.
By the way the transmitter that covers your area is indicated as being Tacolneston located @ 14 miles / 235 degrees from you, and so if on the Humax you press "menu" then select "installation" (4th icon down) you will see "automatic search" on the top of the list.

Gerry: When you say hum, I assume that you are meaning from the actual box? because if you are then its likely from the ventilation fan on the rear of the box or even the hard drive, something which many people find somewhat annoying if the device is located in a quite room.
Of course the hum is sometimes made worse dependant on what the box is sitting on, as if positioned on a thin cabinet the noise can be somewhat amplified in the acoustic sense by the cabinet vibrating, so try a test by lifting the box off whatever its sitting on to see if the hum stops, if it does then you might need to put soft rubber pads under the boxes feet.

Adrian: I've never used a satellite a receiver, so am commenting based on what I know.
The LNB is fed with a voltage whose level "tells" it what polarity to use. Thus, the receiver sends a voltage to the LNB out of the satellite socket.
If there was a short circuit between the inner conductor and the screen then this would, by its nature, "overload" whatever is supplying the voltage. I would be inclined to turn off the TV and/or disconnect the lead to the dish pronto as you may be damaging the TV, particularly if it isn't designed to stop supplying the voltage when it recognises an overload (I don't know whether they do this).
Look for a short which could be a single strand.

Gerry: Hi once again JB38. You solved it for me yet again! It was the vibration. As soon as I lifted it the hum stopped so I'll have to get the advised rubber socks. There is one further thing in this apparently never ending story. When I switch on a warning comes, albeit only very briefly - just long enough to read. It says that my aerial has a short circuit. However since everything works fine I've ignored it. Hopefully I'm not asking for trouble. Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Whatever happens I wish you a great and trouble free Christmas.

Gerry: Well I am pleased to have been of assistance! however with regards to the warning message that pops up for a second or so, press "menu" then select "installation" (4th icon down on LHS) select "antenna power" and press the OK button then use the > button to switch this "off" as I suspect that it may be on.

Gerry: Many thanks for the update and pleased to hear that all seems to be OK now, and so you can maybe settle down to a worry free Christmas, well at least where technical issues are concerned anyway!
Should though any further problems crop up at any time then please do not hesitate in requesting assistance, because as a lifetime of being an RF and associated equipment engineer I don't mind in the least, as my job has always been my hobby.
