My ITV/C4 Freeview channels have disappeared - what can I do? Is it my SCART ca
It is a feature of television signals that they can be effected by the weather. Aside from the obvious damaged that can be caused by wind or torrential rain, the onset of summer can cause a more intriguing problem called "inversion".
Basically, when the sun heats up the land, the hot air can get trapped below cold air at high level. This creates an "inversion layer" which acts like a polished mirror to TV signals. This causes two problems: you can receive both the original and a reflected signal from your own transmitter (on analogue TV this appears as "ghosting") or interference from TV transmitters that are normally too far distant.
The ITV/C4 multiplex of channels (ITV-1, ITV-2, ITV-3, ITV-4, CITV, C4, More4, E4, Quizcall) use a transmission "mode" called 64QAM, and it is sadly much more prone to these problems.
So, whilst a loft-mounted aerial will provide reception at some time, it will fail at others. The only real solution is to mount the aerial (or a new Class I aerial) outside on a pole, but some people report that changing the cable from the aerial to the set-top box to the high-grade satellite cable can also help.
The SCART connection, by the way, only carries a single TV picture, not the Freeview transmission multiplexes, so if this is disconnected it will result in degradation to every channel at once.

belinda: The reason for the (latest!) retune was to move the HD services from the 50s to the 100s.
There aren't as many ITV1 HD regions as those of ITV1 so some areas get the HD of another region. Is it just ITV1 HD that is Granada or is ITV1 Granada as well?
If ITV1 is Granada, then I will make a suggestion as to how to correct it but I will need to know which transmitter you are supposed to be receiving from.
Which transmitter does your aerial face? If it is south/south east then it faces Belmont and you will get BBC Look North from Hull with Peter Levy. If it faces west then it is pointing to Emley Moor and you will get BBC Look North from Leeds with Harry and Christa.

Postcode: BN7 2HB. We lost all our ITV Freeview channels yeserday, though they had been working perfectly since the digital changeover in June. Have tried numerous
full re-installations, but with no effect. This morning the BBC channels seemed to be having difficulty - picture freezing, breakup, etc.
I think we receive transmissions from the Heathfield transmitter, via the County Hall relay in Lewes.

I have an external aerial. An 8 way amp in the attic. 1 tv upstairs (samsung) 1 M&S and 2 Sony downstairs.
Had good pictures on all digital channels apart from the odd bit of freezing/breaking up during bad weather.
However 2 weeks ago lost ITV and Channel 4 (and prob some other channels that I never wath) Nowhere to be seen. Have retuned all but nothing :-( Anyone able to help? My main tv is telling me that the signal is strog...

Helen: Are you saying that your main TV is picking up ITV1, C4 etc and that it is strong?
If there is a variable control on your distribution amplifier, then try turning it down so that the signal level indicated on the main TV isn't as high. Then try tuning in the others.
If the other TVs have manual tuning, then use it instead of running through the full tuning scan. If your aerial is directed to Mendip (horizontal, elements flat), then tune to C54. If your aerial is directed to Bath (vertical, elements up/down), then tune to C28.
The tuned TV will probably tell you whether it is tuned to 54 or 28 on the signal strength screen. This, of course, doesn't necessarily mean that it is tuned to correctly (which is to the transmitter to which the aerial faces). Should this be the case, then this requires correction.
For Bath where Mendip is being picked up, then unplug the aerial when the scan gets to 30%. For Mendip where Bath is being picked up, start the scan with the aerial unplugged and plug in at 50%.

We just have bought a new Samsung TV but now cannot get ITV through the digital freeview box (Humax). Without the box the TV works fine, gets all channels but with the Humax connected we get all channels except ITV C4 C5 ITV + 1 etc. Have tried retuning but nothing. Postcode is LL76 8SQ our transmitter is Llanddonna. We know we had to retune on Nov 14 and we did. Have another TV with another Humax (same model) and that works fine but it is a different aerial (but facing same way)Both aerials are on the roof. We assume it's a fault with the Humax but how do we correct it?
