My ITV/C4 Freeview channels have disappeared - what can I do? Is it my SCART ca
It is a feature of television signals that they can be effected by the weather. Aside from the obvious damaged that can be caused by wind or torrential rain, the onset of summer can cause a more intriguing problem called "inversion".
Basically, when the sun heats up the land, the hot air can get trapped below cold air at high level. This creates an "inversion layer" which acts like a polished mirror to TV signals. This causes two problems: you can receive both the original and a reflected signal from your own transmitter (on analogue TV this appears as "ghosting") or interference from TV transmitters that are normally too far distant.
The ITV/C4 multiplex of channels (ITV-1, ITV-2, ITV-3, ITV-4, CITV, C4, More4, E4, Quizcall) use a transmission "mode" called 64QAM, and it is sadly much more prone to these problems.
So, whilst a loft-mounted aerial will provide reception at some time, it will fail at others. The only real solution is to mount the aerial (or a new Class I aerial) outside on a pole, but some people report that changing the cable from the aerial to the set-top box to the high-grade satellite cable can also help.
The SCART connection, by the way, only carries a single TV picture, not the Freeview transmission multiplexes, so if this is disconnected it will result in degradation to every channel at once.

john: When you say that an indoor aerial picks up the missing programmes but loses BBC, are you meaning if you carry out a rescan when the indoor aerial is being used?
As you haven't provided your exact location I have used a test code of 6EW, and on this it appears that this location is capable of picking up Ch54 from Waltham (@ 23 mls), Sutton Coldfield (@ 40mls), Belmont ( @ 48 mls) but with your local Nottingham transmitter being located at only 4 miles away, this creating the situation whereby your TV's tuner could be picking up muxes from different stations and at various signal levels, this possibly being responsible for the somewhat odd problem you are experiencing.
As far as your normal aerial is concerned, do you know where your aerial is facing? and if you can actually see it, is mounted horizontally or vertically? (elements top to bottom)
The other point is, does your TV (model number of unknown) have a manual tuning facility? as the only way around your problem might be to manually tune in the six muxes one at a time.
Finally, is the normal main aerial yours or a communal one?

john: If you are receiving Freeview from Waltham (131 degrees @ 23mls) then the channels are as follows / 61(BBC) - 54(ITV1) - 58(HD) - 29(SDN / ITV3) - 56(ArqA / Pick TV 11) - 57 (ArqB / Film 4) Nottingham: (197 degrees aerial vertical @ 4 mls) 27 - 24 - 21(HD) - 51 - 52 - 48 Sutton Coldfield: (220 degrees @ 40 mls) 43 - 46 - 40(HD) - 42 - 45 - 39. Belmont: (63 degrees @ 48 mls) 22 - 25 - 28 - 30 - 53 - 60 By the way, on the given post code you are indicated as being able to receive all stations mentioned, although SDN (ITV3) from Belmont is variable because its operating on low power at present.

Our channel list for channel 1,2,3 & 4 keeps changing from RTE1, RTE2, TV3, TV4 to BBC1, BBC2, UTV and C4. We want it to stay at BBC1, BBC2, UTV and C4. When we returned this morning it was fine but now it has changed to RTE1, RTE2, TV3, TV4. How do we change this back to BBC1, BBC2, UTV and C4? We are using a set-up box connected to an aerial in the loft.
