My ITV/C4 Freeview channels have disappeared - what can I do?
published on UK Free TV

It is a feature of television signals that they can be effected by the weather. Aside from the obvious damaged that can be caused by wind or torrential rain, the onset of summer can cause a more intriguing problem called "inversion".

Basically, when the sun heats up the land, the hot air can get trapped below cold air at high level. This creates an "inversion layer" which acts like a polished mirror to TV signals. This causes two problems: you can receive both the original and a reflected signal from your own transmitter (on analogue TV this appears as "ghosting") or interference from TV transmitters that are normally too far distant.

The ITV/C4 multiplex of channels (ITV-1, ITV-2, ITV-3, ITV-4, CITV, C4, More4, E4, Quizcall) use a transmission "mode" called 64QAM, and it is sadly much more prone to these problems.

So, whilst a loft-mounted aerial will provide reception at some time, it will fail at others. The only real solution is to mount the aerial (or a new Class I aerial) outside on a pole, but some people report that changing the cable from the aerial to the set-top box to the high-grade satellite cable can also help.

The SCART connection, by the way, only carries a single TV picture, not the Freeview transmission multiplexes, so if this is disconnected it will result in degradation to every channel at once.

I purchased 3 new TVs with Freeview a few months ago, all was well until the 19th of this month, then we lost ITV on two of them the other set is fine (I might add they are not all the same make) I have tried to retune them a number of times with no success. Any ideas

I have just replaced a samsung tv with an almost identical one. Both have freeview recievers. With the new telly the bbc channels are breaking up and unwatchable. I don't understand as we had perfect recepetion before switching.
Our postcode is tr5 0ub. I think there are two reasonably local transmitters. Could the new tv have auto-tuned to a different one?

Joe: You have to be aware of the fact that being located at just under 7 miles from the transmitter your signal level could be on the verges of being too high for the tuner fitted into your new TV, as unless the two TV's are identical models its not necessarily the case that the tuners will be the same, and the symptoms of an excessive signal are identical to that of the reverse situation where a signal is on the weak side.

However just to ensure both sets are on the same transmitter put each set on BBC and carry out a signal strength check and where the mux number associated with the channel will be seen, if Redruth then Ch44 should be indicated, Ch41 for ITV1.

Needless to say that if any form of booster is being used try a test with it bypassed.

Hi, there

I recently moved into the new house at TN26 1NL. My LG TV has freeview inside. I auto tune the TV, sometimes it gets BBC channels (ONLY), then do auto tune again, it gets the other channels BUT BBC channels. Could someone please guide me the direction to fix this? Many thanks in advance.

John: You are indicated as being able to receive signals from Dover as well as Heathfield and also Bluebell Hill (even possibly Crystal Palace albeit poor) but Dover is indicated as having the edge over the others.

Because the spacing of the channels used by the receivable stations isn't that great the aerial in / out trick during auto tuning would in my opinion not be that successful, and so the best policy is to manually tune in each of the muxes required, that is should your TV allow it? as some don't.

On the assumption that it does, carry out an auto tune whilst the aerial connection is removed as that will blank out the memory (or give TV factory reset) then once complete select the tuning menu "manual tune" and start by entering Dover's muxes one at a time, scanning then storing the results of each individual scan.

Dover: Ch50 (BBC) - 51 (ITV1) - 53 (HD) - Ch55 (ITV3) - Ch59 (ArqA) - Ch48 (ArqB)

By the way Dover is located at 18 miles on a bearing of 84 degrees.

(Ch48 Ar)

john: As you are indicated as having only made one posting (todays!) then no-one can possibly (and if possible!) supply an answer to whatever you wanted to know unless "you" indicate the heading under which you had asked the question, as it doesn't appear to have been under this one unless you have used different log in details.
