My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

Aubrey Lawson: You mention the dish signal being good, but though, good should mean a strength of around 70% or so and with the quality being around the same, if indeed not higher, because if its lower than the strength, then the dish is slightly out of alignment, something which result in the type of problems mentioned.

The other point being, if you haven't already done so? then disconnect the box from the mains, leaving it that way for a minimum of 30 seconds before powering it up again, checking the results after its gone though the usual "searching for listings" procedure.

Hello

Thank you for your response regarding the second part of the recommendation that part is done practically on a daily basis.
As for the first part both signal strength and quality are showing about 9/10 tenths across the bars in grey but I will try and adjust the dish later when son comes around etc.
thank you
Aubrey

Aubrey Lawson: If both strength and quality are level pegging at around 90% then don't touch the dish, as the levels used as an example are the minimum required for satisfactory operation, and you exceed them.

If not already done, remove your viewing card and wipe the gold contacts with a tissue, reinserting same on completion and checking the results, as a card defect can also cause problems of the type described.

If though nothing has changed and you are using a Sky+ HD type receiver? (signal bar indications on a standard box being purple/ pink(ish) try the "new install" procedure as described below. Although if that doesn't cure the problem either, then "if" at all possible, you should try and test the box out on someone else's dish, as your dishes LNB "might" be defective.

1 : Press "Services" on your Sky remote and you'll see the "Options" menu
highlighted.

2 : Press the right arrow to select "Settings" then press on.

3 : Press (in smooth succession) 0 - 1 - Select then you will see the
set up screen.

4 : Press the right arrow to highlight "Install" which then changes to New Install when you do this - press "select".

5: Follow the instructions on your TV screen until you see the message"Installation Complete" is displayed then press select.

To be ablew to offer any suggestions as to why you are having problems with only ITV1, we would need at least a post code and some idea of what equipment you are using. Further comment depends on your response.

motty: If your card is to enable you to view subscription channels associated with a Sky package, plus being able to record / playback same, you will have to notify Sky of the change of box.

The reason for this being, that the serial number of your present box will be programmed into your card as a security measure in order to stop you passing (selling) the card onto someone else, needless to say, this will stop you using it in your new box.

By the way, if your dish is defective in any way whatsoever it will "not" result in a weak picture, but one that constantly breaks up. What you have reported is more inclined to indicate a bad connection between the box and your TV, or that the box is indeed faulty.

That said does not apply if you are not a Sky subscriber, as free channels do not require a card to view them, the purpose of the card purely being to enable you to view news services appropriate to the area you reside in.
