Can I use my ex-contract sky digital satellite receiver to get Freeview channels

Hi i had a skybox in my old house i have taken the box o my new house where there is a sky dish i had connected the box to the dish along with my old card an i am unable to get any channels i was hoping to be able to watch the free to air channels. If i am correct what am i doin wrong?

Daniel: Press "Services - 4 - 6" on your boxes remote control and have a look at the signal strength / quality indication bars, as if nothing is showing then that can indicate that there is either a fault in the coax leading to the dish, one of the "F" connectors at either end and in particular the dish end if water has crept into the connector, the dish having been moved a fraction out of alignment or finally the LNB on the end of the dish arm is defective.
These are all the possible reasons for your problem if you know for certain that the box was working OK, and by the way the card is not necessary for Sky's free to view channels except for Pick TV.

I wish to end my sky subscription.
I am currently using a HD+ box.
I understand I will lose some channels and the HD facility, will I still be able to record programmes from the remaining channels and play them back.

Stephen Newmarch: No! as when a contract is cancelled the recording side of any Sky+ box will be disabled at the same time as your access to view Sky dedicated programmes effectively turning the box into a normal Sky box.
That said, I have seen it reported that if you remove your card before cancellation and are content to view normal "free to view" channels then you "might" manage to hold on to the recording facility, that is so long as you never at any time are tempted to try the card, as access is cancelled via an "over air" command from sky straight into the card, this being the key to the system.
Try a test by removing the card and placing the box in standby, then take it out of standby and check if you can play back something you have recorded, "if" you can then that's the procedure to use.

I am looking to cancel my SKY + subscription and go the route of FreeviewSat. My question is, will I still be able to use the "mouse" attached to our kitchen TV for receiving channels post SKY?

David Jordan: If you just stop subscribing, and use the Sky+ box as a standard non-recording box then your "Magic Eye" will continue to work.
If you change to Freesat+ or Freeview+HD, you will not have an RF output - these have being discontinued by Sky for some years now.
However, you can always install a cheap second Freesat box using a spare output from your satellite dish.

mark: No upgrade to the dish is required. You don't say what type of satellite receiver you have though? If it is a an HD capable receiver,then you will receive transmissions, but this assumes you have an HD capable TV. Alternatives to SKY are the BBC ITV supported "Freesat"HD boxes and FTA Free to air generic HD satellite recievers e.g. "Tdechnomate" HD or similar.
