Mendip transmitter - January 11th retune required
Brian Butterworth published on UK Free TV At the moment, viewers using the Mendip transmitter are unable to subscribe to Sky Sports 1 and 2 via BT Vision and/or Top Up TV - see BT Vision, TUTV, Sky Sports 1+2 and the Mendip transmitter - ukfree.tv.
To deal with this, on 11th January 2011, Multiplex D will change from being broadcast on C59+ in 16QAM mode, and switch to be the "normal" Arqiva B multiplex (10kW ERP) on C67 in 64QAM mode.
It will stay there until it moves to C52 on 28 September 2011. This date also sees Multiplex COM4/SDN move from C62+ to C48 and COM5/ARQA move from C56+ to C56.
In summary - if you use Mendip - even if you don't use Sky Sports, you must retune again on 11th January 2011.
When you retune - use a "first time installation" or do this - My Freeview box has no EPG, is blank on FIVE, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1, has no sound or the channel line up is wrong
Note: This event is not part of the digital switchover process, and is not being managed by Digital UK, but by Arqiva and ITV.

I was very lucky to learn about the retune from a tiny paragraph in a local paper.
I've now retuned about a dozen times but get the message no signal on the Yesterday(12) and one or two other channels which I value.

Until recently I was able to access Film 4, after reading this sites posts and reviewing the Mendip changes that this is probably my problem.
It may not be your problem but can you kindly advise the contact e-mail and telephone numbers to whom I can address my complaint.
I understand that the change will be in excess of -3db - that means the signal strength is reduced by 1/2 and that a large number of people will be affected due to this.
Quite frankling this fu...ing abdictaion of responsibility is what really gets up my nose.

Finally I want to add that I have e-mailed the new CEO of Arquiva and also Adam Crozier (CEO of ITV) on the subject.
I urge anyone else who feels pissed off to do the same.

David Ramsay - It does seem that there is much frustration being pretty forcibly expressed by many many disgruntled viewers. It seems for a host of reasons. ie:- Switchover issues - no information - poor information - mis-information - ongoing transmitter issues - introduction of HD to the system - some set top boxes not fit for purpose - little foresight given to design in terms of an acceptable level of future proofing - not solely in my view the fault of receiver manufacturers. Briantist in an earlier post describes issues with Medip as a "Cock - up", but Digital Switch-Over issues as far as I can see extends much much wider in terms of planning strategy - technical issues likely to be encountered or unforeseen - unrealistic timescales - An abismal official public information strategy and one could go on and on and on. Satellite or Cable seems the more dependable choice option at the moment,but for many these options are unafordable and even with "Freesat" whilst a dependable platform it involves an inital outlay that some may see as an optiona that can't be met financially.

@Les Nichol - I work in a similar industry to broadcasting, however, the basic principle is that once you deliver a service you do not degrade it. It must stay constant or improve.
We do not yet have an infrastructure in the UK which is capable to run my preferred solution AKA HDTV via ADSL.
I do agree about frustration - but up until now it had been painless.
I see an even more serious problem coming up Digital Radio changeover even tho I received assurances in writing it will never happen from a government official. I will hold them to that since I have no intention of paying the cost for all my radios.
Mind you there is a distinct possibility that radio transmission in any form recognisable will disappear in the not too distant future.

David Ramsay - Yes, your second paragraph highlights what I think would be the prefered optiono for most. There is some ongoing co-operation between the BBC and HHK japan on this, but on the demo clip on highlighting early testing featured on the BBC's "Click" program slot on News24, it seems they are talking some 15 to 20 years down the line which will almosrt certainly see me in another place or being totally "Ga Ga"!!!

I've just seen on here that everyone has to do a retune from 11th Jan.
I just did one and i'm happy that i now have Film 4 back, but the retune didn't help get back or correct all other channels from cat C that are still unavailable due to poor signal strength..Which worked fine 3 months ago.
