What price for an aerial installation?
In responses to the guideline I posted about how much having a new aerial fitted should cost, Ian Grice posted: "£40-£50? Every aerial fitter I contacted wants at least £150+VAT considering you can get a class 3 aerial for under £10 and a class 2 for under £15 and cable is 40p a metre why are they charging so much for 30 minutes work?"
OK, for some places putting up a TV aerial is hard work, such as multi-story properties. As many people will simply be exchanging a Group A, B, C/D, E or K aerial for a wideband type, often without changing the supporting pole or cable, a high price cannot be justified.
I am concerned that some companies will exploit vulnerable groups (such as the elderly).
So, I what prices have you been quoted for aerial installations? What price have you paid for installation?
Do you know of any companies to avoid? Do you know of any companies that are good value for money?
Or do you work for a great aerial installation company?

Julian: What's the frequency? UHF 49 should be 698 MHz.

Julian: Samsungs are perverse as they do not display UHF channel numbers and instead display frequencies in MHz only. As Michael says, C49 is 698MHz.
The main point is that the information as far as Freq. and Network goes is that BBC One is the same as BBC Two, and that ITV is the ame as Channel 4. Is this so? And if not what are the different values for these fields?

OK thanks for that info, BBC One had tuned to a different ch. No.
I re-tuned and think all ok now 100% signal, I will see when the weather deteriotes (won't have to wait long !) as that was when I had the most problems with the old aeriel
Thanks again Dave & Micheal

Hello,
I started suffering a poor signal and decided a new Ariel was necessary.
The firm I contacted ,to put up a new mast and Ariel, and run the co-ax to the nearest air grid (they do not go under floors.that was left to me,aged 69) was:
ORBITAL STREAM LTD MANSFIELD GBR which came up as a local firm on the web, though I live near Macclesfield,Cheshire
They charged me for about one hours work and the Ariel, mast etc. £439.20 .!!
It was only later when asking round that I realized I had been ripped off; to late as I had agreed the price while feeling this was very high,I just wanted the job done and out of the way before Xmas.
I would just like to warn off anybody from this firm and benefit from my very bad experience with them

Keith, £73.20 goes to the Government as VAT, but how they arrived at £366.00 for an aerial is beyond me also.
Maybe it is 9ct gold plated, it needs to be.
But a word of advice to the consumer, phone around, there are lots of small aerial businesses who come under the VAT threshold and therefore do not have to register for VAT, so even if this job did come to £366.00, (which seems unlikely), there is no additional £73.20 to pay to the Government.
The bigger firms have higher overheads and a higher turnover and they cannot avoid being VAT registered and charging the consumer VAT on behalf of the Government, smaller firms, especially the 'one man bands, don't have the overheads as most work from home, don't do the turnover and can therefore avoid charging the consumer this Tax.

Ian Edge - assuming that "mast" just means a pole attached to the chimney you have indeed been ripped off.
Worth a call to the local Trading Standards.
Or that Esther wotsit's TV programme Rogue Traders.
Or just a call to the company saying you think there must have been a mistake! Record it!

Even if its a vat registered company - lets say £130 for an aerial to one point which is about the going rate here in sheffield
plus vat =£156
im not vat registered so would have been £130
unless its a poor signal area where we need to use a 20' mast and a high gain aerial into a mast head amp - but even still that wouldn't run into the price that MR Edge paid
Large companies do the quote high price if they go for it great if not they offer a discount or get the call centre to call the customer with a TODAYS A SPECIAL PROMOTION DAY and you can have 50% off
Seen that loads of times
I quote a price - thats the price that i will charge - no discount as i dont over charge
